I am back!:) If u say "whant" the next verb u should
write in infinitive. Ведь, ты не сможешь сказать I whant buying(такой
формы даже нет), это же просто не допустимо, аж ухо "режет"
НУ, вообше как такого правила я не знаю, но это по-моему и так ясно.
Вы так же можете во втором случае сказать
Everyone likes(it's better to say) to get letters.
Тут нет разницы, смысл один и тот же...
Т.Е. можно и так и так говорить, разницы нет, как удобнее. Ну разница
есть, но она зависит от времени, от действия, "покупать" не может быть
ы континеусе(не помню как это называется, подскажите, если кто знает!)! Думаю
вы меня понимаете!

Conclusion:
Это зависит от глагола второго...

One more joke

One day two MGIMO alumni bump into each other, say, somewhere at the

- How much watch?
- Six watch
- Such much?
- For whom how...

- Else would!

Re: Verb patterns

Hi

At the first I want to say thank's to Margarita and Harut.
That's a little complicated for me, but I try to understand, :)

I understood this is how matters stand:

1. Verbs who show what you like - only with -ing:
like, love, enjoy (Ex. love swimming)
2. Verbs who show process with -ing and with to+infinitive
finish, begin, continue, start
Ex. begin raining
begin to rain
3. Verbs who necessitate the second verb (what are you thinking an d
feeling, what are do you
want to do etc) - only with to+infinitive
agree, choose, decide, expect, forget, help, hope, manage, promise,
refuse, try, want, would
like, would love, would prefer.

I understood right or no? The rest is as in fog...

Дискуссионный лист "Давайте изучать английский язык вместе"
here are some rules:
FIRST:
1. You should use gerund (ing) after the following verbs:
stop delay fancy consider admit miss
involve
finish postpone imagine avoid deny risk
practise

1A. Also after give up (=stop)
put off (=postpone)
carry on/go on (=continue)
keep on (=do smth contineously).

2. You should use infinitive after the following verbs:
offer decide hope deserve attempt promise
agree plan aim afford manage threaten
refuse arrange learn forget fail seem
appear tend pretend claim

2A. The negative sentence of such a structure will look like:
We decided NOT TO GO....

SECOND:
1. Verb+ -ing -> often we use this structure for an action that happens
BEFORE or AT THE SAME TIME:
I enjoy walking.
2. Remember doing something = I did it and now I remember this
Remember to do smth = I remembered that I had to do it, and so I did it.
3. Go on going something = continue doing the same thing
Go on to do something = do or say something new (example, tell one more
joke, and then another one!)

THIRD:
1. like love hate can't bear enjoy dislike mind
can't stand
1A. theese verbs means like or not like. they are followed by -ing.
1B. after like/love/hate/can't bear you may use as to be, as -ing.
1C. after enjoy/dislike/mind/can't stand you have to use -ing.

Actually, you just need to understand that. Practise, again :) This is kind
a rule, which exceptions take more place than rule itselfs:)

good luck!

Re: Verb patterns

Dear Andrew

1. As far as I know, if element "to" is added to verb, then the verb (wherever
it was) itself become to infinitive from, with russian ending "-ать" "-ять" "-ить",

for example =>
They want to buy a new car = Они хотят (что делать) купИТЬ новую машину
He finished to read his book = Он закончил (что делать) читАТЬ свою книгу

2.
Относительно второго, я должен сказать, что по-моему это не специальный какой-то
оборот, а просто Герундий (Gerund),
которой по своему окончанию схож с Partisiple I (-ing), но его основная функция
заключается в преобразовании любого слова в существительное с окончанием -ание
-ение (swiming - плавАНИЕ, reading - чтЕНИЕ)

Однако, существуют сложные формы герундия, которые преобразовывают любое слово
в глагол и причем в неопределенный вид, его классический пример =>
"He who likes borrowing, dislikes paying"
"Тот кто любит (что делать) брАТЬ в долг (одалживать), не любит (что делать)
возвращать (платить).

Now, your examples=>
=> Everyone loves getting letters = Каждый любит (что делать) получать письма
(герундий в форме глагола инф.)
=> He finished reading his book = Он закончил чтЕНИЕ своей книги (герундий в
форме существительного)

Re: question

Hello, Hello, Hello everybody!!!

Dear Akzhan

As far as I have understood, the expression "Axioms require no proof but theorems
do." differences from expression "Axioms don't require proof but theorems do"
thus =>
=> "Аксиомы (совсем) не требуют доказательства, а теоремы требуют", in my opinion
все дело в переводе "no"
or "Аксиомы не требуют (никаких) доказательств, а теоремы требуют",
1) никакой, нет,
2) (совсем) не

But "Axioms don't require proof but theorems do" =>
it is translated simply => "Аксиомы не требуют доказательства, а теоремы требуют",

Thank you to all who helped me to understand this interestnig (for me) the cause.

I would like especially thank to Margo and Akzhanka and Andrew.

with best regards
Harut
