Call for Papers

AFL 2008
The 12th International Conference on Automata and Formal Languages

May 27-30, 2008, Balatonfüred, Hungary

The Computer and Automation Research Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences kindly invites you to take part at the 12th International Conference on Automata and Languages, in Balatonfüred, May 27-30, 2008.  The AFL series was initiated by Prof. István Peák (1936-1989). He organized the AFL conferences in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1988 and started the organization of AFL'90. These conferences were all held in the hills around Salgótarján. In 1986 and 1988, the title of the conference was Automata, Languages and Programming Systems. Since the untimely death of Prof. István Peák in 1990, the AFL conferences have been organized in every third year. In 1993 and 1996, two more "Salgótarján conferences" took place. The last three conferences of the series were held in Vasszécsény (1999), Debrecen (2002), and Dobogókõ (2005). Nowadays a Steering Committee takes care of the continuation of the AFL series.

Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original unpublished research in all areas of automata and formal language theory and their applications.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): grammars, acceptors and transducers for strings, trees, graphs, arrays, etc., algebraic theories for automata and languages, combinatorial properties of words and languages, decision problems, efficient algorithms for automata and languages, descriptional and computational complexity of automata and languages, formal power series and weighted automata, cellular automata, relations to logic, picture description and analysis, concurrency, distributed systems, multi-agent systems, bio-inspired computing, quantum computing, and cryptography.

Authors are invited to submit a draft of a full paper with at most 12 pages in the form of a pdf file. The paper should provide sufficient detail to allow the Program Committee to evaluate its validity, quality, and relevance. If appropriate, then detailed proofs can be attached as an appendix. Simultaneous submission to other conferences with published proceedings is not allowed. Only electronic submissions are accepted, please follow the instructions at the conference URL.

The proceedings will be published by the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and will be available at the conference. We anticipate that a special issue of the International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science will be devoted to selected papers published at the conference.
