Around 150 people gathered in front of the Turkish Embassy in central London on Friday denouncing Turkey's plans to bombard the Kurdish-held region of Afrin in northern Syria.
Protesters chanted against the Turkish government, accusing it of terrorism and of having ties with the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
A member of the UK Kurdistan Students Union warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Afrin would be his «graveyard.»
On Wednesday, the Security Council in Turkey discussed the possibility of a military operation in Afrin, an autonomous region under Kurdish control in northern Syria.
Turkey views the People's Protection Units (YPG) that is active in Afrin as extension of banned militant group Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
The district of Afrin is home to about 500,000 civilians, a population which has doubled with refugees after fighting in other areas of the country.

Netherlands: Thousands fired up over gas drilling after quake

Approximately 10,000 people rallied in the Dutch city of Groningen on Friday to protest against gas drilling in the province.
For years drilling conducted by the Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM) has caused numerous earthquakes, most notably a 3.4 quake on January 8, the hardest to hit the province since 2012.
Demonstrators marched through the city holding torches and calling on the Dutch government to speed up the damage claims process and end drilling altogether.
Government officials have received an estimated 1300 damage reports. Last weekend, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte apologised for slow governmental response and blamed it partially on lengthy coalition talks that took place after elections last year.
In response to this, Dutch MP Jesse Klaver said that “it isn’t right to hide behind an excuse, whatever the excuse may be. Regardless if it has to do with the forming of a new coalition. The point is that people have been waiting too long to receive compensation for the damages that have been caused.”

USA: Federal govt. shuts down as Senate rejects spending bill

The US federal government shutdown at 12:01am (05:01am GMT) on Saturday morning after Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a new budget.
Sixty votes were needed to push forward a bill to fund the Pentagon and other federal agencies, which would keep the government open for four weeks. However, the final vote on the new bill failed to pass the margin with 50-49 to block the vote.
Five Democrats voted alongside the Republican majority and four Republicans turned from their own party.
The main point of contention lies over the differing opinions in how to protect undocumented migrants known as 'dreamers'.
This is the first shutdown to happen with one party controlling both Congress and the White House. The last shutdown was in 2013 and lasted a total of 16 days.

According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, «A government shutdown was 100 percent unavoidable.» The Republican slammed Senate Democrats for playing «irresponsible political games», detailing how government workers would be directly affected by the Senate's decision.
Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell thrashed back, stating that the Republican Party has “failed” in their responsibility to govern. “The American people know that this party is not capable of governing”, he said.
McConnell then addressed Trump directly, saying “The way things went today, the way you turned from a bipartisan deal, it is almost as if you were rooting for a shutdown and now we have one, and the blame should crash entirely on President Trump's shoulders.”

President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach spoke to the press ahead of a meeting on North Koreas’s (DPRK) participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, speaking from Lausanne on Saturday.
Bach expressed his hopes for a “constructive meeting”, which is to include discussion on the size of the possible DPRK delegation, the events that it can attend and the possibility of marching together with the South Korea under the common flag, as both Koreas agreed to do on Wednesday.
The discussion may be complicated by the fact that North Korea missed a deadline to register their participation in the Olympics.
The parties also include the representatives of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and a delegation from the PyeongCgang 2018 Organising Committee.
North Korea has also offered to send a 230-member cheerleading squad to the Olympics as well as 150-member delegation made up of athletes and cheerleaders to the Paralympics in March. North and South Korean officials also discussed fielding a joint women's ice hockey team.

Delegations set to discuss whether North Korea (DPRK) will participate in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics arrived in Lausanne on Saturday.
The delegations which are taking part in the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) negotiations included South Korean representatives, International Ski Federation (FIS) President Gian-Franco Kasper, North Korean representative Chang Ung and members of the PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee.
IOC President Thomas Bach also arrived, expressing his hopes for the «constructive» meeting.
Points of discussion on the agenda include: the size of the possible DPRK delegation, the events that it can attend and the possibility of marching alongside the South Korea under the common flag, as both Koreas agreed to do on Wednesday.
After the delegations arrived, both Korean flags were seen to fall in a sudden gust of wind while the IOC flag kept standing.

Members of various Thai civil rights groups united under the slogan «We walk» to overcome over 400 km (250 miles) together. The movement attempted to raise awareness about what they claim are violations against their rights to freedom.
Around 200 police officers guarded the area near Thammasat University where the protesters gathered, setting up fences and stopping protesters from passing by.
«We are very sorry that the government decided not to let us walk and march to Khon Kaen because freedom of movement and freedom of expression of our ideas should be the basic rights,» said Fai, one of the protesters.
The protesters reportedly aimed to visit an imprisoned student activist Jatupat «Pai Dao Din» Boonpattararaksa in Khon Kaen.

Верхняя палата Конгресса США не смогла принять законопроект о бюджете, чем обрекла на временное закрытие многие государственные ведомства. Официально они прекратили функционировать в полночь с пятницы на субботу. Не ясно, как долго продлится остановка работы госсектора.
Утверждение любых финансовых законопроектов, по правилам Сената, требует 60 голосов, бюджетный билль набрал только 51. Сорок четыре демократа и 4 республиканца голосовали против, с большинством республиканцев блокировались лишь 5 демократов. Всем им в ноябре предстоит переизбрание, и все они представляют штаты, где Дональд Трамп одержал победу на президентских выборах 2016 года.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has confirmed that both the DPRK and South Korea will participate in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Games, and will together march under the Korean Unification Flag during the opening ceremonies, in a statement given in Lausanne on Saturday.
Despite missing a registration deadline, North Korea will be allowed to have some athletes participate, and will be sending 22 athletes who will compete in three sports and five disciplines.
The two countries have also agreed to form one Women’s Hockey Team together. “For the first time in Olympic history, the two Korean teams will unite to compete as one team in a sport. The unified women’s ice hockey team will be represented by the Korean unification flag, and will compete as Korea”, Bach said.

Syria: Russian Centre for the Reconciliation evacuates civilians from eastern Ghouta

Servicemen from the Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in the Syrian Arab Republic conducted a humanitarian evacuation of eastern Ghouta's civilian population, as shown in footage filmed in Damascus and released on Saturday.
«We are doing our best so that the rest of ill people can be taken to the country's hospital to get treatment as well,» said Yuri Evtushenko, the head of the centre.
On the night of January 19th, the Russian Reconciliation Centre along with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent Movement reportedly took ten people, including three children, out of the opposition-held city of Douma to provide them with treatment.
Reports state that the children were urgently hospitalised.
Eastern Ghouta's citizens are facing famine and the militants impede their routes to the territories run by the official government, according to some of the evacuated.
The first humanitarian operation of this nature was carried out on December 29th, 2017.
«We made huge effort to evacuate the ill people, 29 people, from eastern Ghouta ahead of the New Year,» said Evtushenko.
Eastern Ghouta is one of the four de-escalation zones in Syria which is currently under control of armed rebel groups.

Turkey has placed missile systems that are reportedly pointed towards Afrin in Syria along the Turkish border.
On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan talked about impending military operations in Syria's Afrin and Manbij regions, stating that the Turkish armed forces are prepared to «sort this matter» and that the campaign could start «at any minute.»
