South Korean Unification Ministry spokesperson Baik Tae-hyun said he welcomes North Korea's positive response to the idea of re-opening a communications channel in the border village of Panmunjom, in Seoul, on Wednesday.
The spokesperson stated «we will discuss practical affairs regarding yesterday's offer to hold South and North Korea talks.»
The communications channel has been closed since January 2016, when the former South Korean government shut down the Kaesong Industrial Complex, following Pyongyang's fourth nuclear test.
On Tuesday, the South Korean government proposed holding high-level talks with North Korea on January 9 over their possible involvement in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
This followed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's New Year's speech, in which he stated that Pyongyang was «open to dialogue» with South Korea, and added that a North Korean team may attend the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Between 800 to 1,000 migrants from Albania, Kosovo and a number of African countries are estimated to be crammed inside temporary housing in the ‘Blida’ camp in Metz, footage from Tuesday reveals.
The temporary camp is located in a parking lot, which was opened in 2017 for a total of 300 migrants. However, the current number of people staying at the camp greatly surpasses its estimated capacity.
According to the director of the Abbe Pierre foundation Veronique Etienne, France has kept the Roma people in a «grey zone» for a long time with access to only a limited number of professions, which is why «their integration was much delayed.»
«There is no reception policy, there is no integration policy and there is no dignity for the people who are accommodated» said Raphael Pitti, a doctor who volunteers at Blida camp.
For Eric Graff, member of a group that volunteers at the camp, the state isn’t putting public money to good use, «this money should be used in making real centres, this would be less expensive and especially over time this would cost even less.»
The living conditions at the camp have been described as “prison-like” by a young migrant who is currently staying in a room with 10 more people. «Until 9.30 pm they leave the entrance open to go sleep and then they wake you up at 7 am like in prison», he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his government's intention to expel undocumented African refugees from Israel during a cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Netanyahu spoke first about a guarded hard border comprising fences and barriers before delivering his future intentions for undocumented migrants inside Israel.
«We have deported approximately 20,000 and the mission now is to deport the rest. Last year we deported approximately 4,000 and the major effort is to deport most of those who remain, who have infiltrated and are present in Israel illegally,» said the Israeli prime minister
He added: «the infiltrators have a clear choice — cooperate with us and leave voluntarily, respectably, humanely and legally, or we will have to use other tools at our disposal, which are also according to the law. I hope that they will choose to cooperate with us.»
North Korea: North-South communications channel in Panmunjom reopens after 2 years silence

Chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification Ri Son Gwon made an historic announcement in Pyongyang on Wednesday, as he confirmed that the Panmunjom liaison channel between North and South Korea had re-opened for the first time after closing nearly two years ago.
Speaking from a nationally broadcast press conference in Pyongyang, Ri announced that, «(Kim Jong Un) gave an order to resume the Panmunjom liaison channel between the North and South from 15:00 (06:30 GMT) on January 3 to coordinate on time with the South on the matter of sending a delegation to the Pyeongchang Olympics and holding talks for this.»
The Chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification added that North Korean leader Kim Jung Un “expressed that he welcomed the South's position.»

Palestinians in Gaza explained on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump’s threats to cut off aid to Palestinian territories “will not stop them”.
Several pointed out that the threat is hardly a new topic. “They have been practicing this policy since 2012, this restricting policy against the Palestinian society that is still under occupation. We confirm that all the policies and practices of America are not going to stop us from defending our Palestinian rights,” affirmed one Gaza resident.
“We support the Palestinian leadership to act to reject all decisions. Trump does not have the right to impose these decisions in the existence of the conditions we live in”, another added.
On Tuesday US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off aid to Palestinians. The leader said that the US pays “hundreds of millions of dollars a year and get no appreciation or respect.”
“We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?», he tweeted.
Ireland: One dead, two injured after stabbing in Dundalk

A 24-year-old was killed and two others were injured in the town of Dundalk, County Louth, after a man attacked them on the street on Wednesday.
The area around Avenue Road has been cordoned off by police while local authorities have reportedly arrested a suspect, an 18-year-old Egyptian man.
Police are investigating whether the attack was ‘terror related’.
The victim, a Japanese national, was allegedly stabbed in the back while on the street and died at the scene.
Two Irish men were also reportedly attacked with an iron bar in different locations in the town, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
The Egyptian suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held at Dundalk Garda Station.
The man was allegedly carrying two knives, according to the Gardai.
Germany: Govt. raises concerns over violence against Iranian protesters

German government spokespeople expressed concern over reports of fatalities and numerous arrests during anti-government protests in Iran, at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
Ulrike Demmer, deputy government spokesperson, and Rainer Breul, spokesperson for the Foreign Office, called on the Iranian Government to act with restraint and respect the freedom of assembly and expression.
The spokespeople said the German government believes that the protests are «legitimate» and deserve respect as «people courageously bring their economic and political concerns to the public attention.»
Demmer added, «Should individual protesters misuse violence, the state should react reasonably and with constitutional means.»
Breul said that Germany's Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has expressed his concerns to his Iranian colleagues, «Calling upon them to respect the freedom of assembly and expression, and also to demand that the Iranian security forces do not use violence against the protesters.»
At least 21 people have died in Iran's anti-government protests that have raged since Thursday, with rallies against rising food prices, unemployment and alleged corruption.

State of Palestine: Relatives mourn teen killed by Israeli forces in West Bank

Relatives mourned over the body of 17-year old Palestinian Musab Firas Al-Tamimi in the Istishari Hospital in Ramallah on Wednesday.
Al-Tamimi reportedly died after being shot in the head by Israeli soldiers.
Red Crescent ambulances rushed Al-Tamimi to the hospital where he was immediately put into surgery, only to be pronounced dead not long afterwards, according to reports.
Al-Tamimi was shot in the vicinity of the West Bank's Halamish settlement near Deir Nidham, for allegedly carrying a gun, Israeli media reports.
The 17-year-old is allegedly the 14th Palestinian to have been killed by Israeli forces since US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, sparking widespread protests across the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.
