Iran: US intervention ‘major challenge’ warns foreign minister

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned West Asia is undergoing one of its most difficult times during a speech at the 2nd Tehran Security Conference on Monday.
Speaking at the conference, Zarif accused US policies and intervention in the region of being the “major challenge that fueled current crises and made them more complicated.” The US, Zarif said, “continues to ignore the concrete realities in the region, and persists in its destabilising and destructive policies.”
Zarif also identified extremism as a challenge to the region, and said it was now “facing eradication.” “Syrian and Iraqi people and government opposed IS bravely for the last 6 years and achieved numerous victories, and we are glad that we supported the nations of these two countries under the said conditions,” Zarif added.
The 2nd Tehran Security Conference opened in the Iranian capital on Monday under the name «Regional security in the West Asia: Emerging Challenges and Trends,» with over 200 Iranian and foreign political dignitaries in attendance. The conference opened one day after Iran's Revolutionary Guard declared an end to the recent unrest that has swept through Iran since the start of anti-government protests.

Germany: Politicians arrive for last-ditch coalition talks

Leaders from Germany’s main political parties arrived at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) headquarters in Berlin for the second round of coalition talks on Monday.
Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) leader Martin Shultz said: «For sure Europe will have to be one of the big topics for a future Federal government, in whatever way this will be. That's why I hope that Mrs. Merkel and Mr. Seehofer and myself will reach results today in regards to Europe which will make the Federal Republic of Germany the motor of European politics again. That is our common goal, that's what I hope for but I am optimistic.»
CDU Minister President for Saxony-Anhalt Reiner Haseloff briefly commented about yesterday’s talks: “we made good progress and this is going to be successful.»
«I don't like the basic tonality that dominates very much. We talked a lot about spending money and I don't think politics is about spending a lot of tax money,» said CDU Minister President of Saxony Michael Kretschmer.
“There is a lot to be done,” added CDU Parliamentary leader Volker Kauder.
Since the collapse of the so-called Jamaica coalition talks, Merkel has thus far been unable to persuade the SPD to enter into another grand coalition.
The growing political instability has raised the possibility of fresh elections or a minority government.

Iran: Thousands rally as Revolutionary Guards declare end to unrest

Thousands of government supporters rallied across various Iranian towns and cities on Sunday, in a show of support for the current regime and to voice their disapproval of anti-government protests.
Marchers waved Iranian flags and chanted several slogans critical of the US and Israel.
Sanandaj, Zahedan, Meybod, Abarkuh, Kordkuy, Aqqala, Alvand and Buin Zahra were among the cities which saw protests.
These demonstrations came on the same day Iran's Revolutionary Guard declared an end to the recent unrest.

USA: Smoke billows from roof of Trump Tower

A fire broke out at the top of Trump Tower in downtown Manhattan in New York on Monday morning.
Footage shows smoke billowing from the rooftop of the 58-storey skyscraper.
Firefighters were called to the scene and have now managed to bring the blaze under control.
The New York Fire Department reported two injuries resulting from a fire in the building’s heating and air conditioning units.
Officials also confirmed that US President Donald Trump and his family are not in residence at Trump Tower.
