Athena: February And March Reviews Of English Poetry On Stihi.Ru/Обзор англоязычной поэзии сайта за февраль и март
внештатные редакторы

Hello voracious poetry reader!

I plan to write these reviews in English, because practice makes perfect!
(If you feel you need a Russian translation please let me know - Если вы считаете что нужен русский перевод, дайте мне знать, если наберётся достаточно желающих, то я постараюсь переводить все обзоры)

Here's my first attempt at reviewing some deserving work in English of stihi.ru poets. I will not judge my own poetry and translations into English, if you'd like, they are located here:
Athena .

I'd like to start with a reminder of a great composer Giuseppe Verde. During the rehearsals to his operas, he asked that all the doors will be locked shut. Why? His areas (words and music) were so "easy on the ears", people absorbed them so well, that some of them made their ways to restaurants and bars before the opera's opening night.
Such is the power of well written verse and music.

It's also true that cutesy rhymes are boring, but as you're starting out, why not try creating something that is just pleasant to read, later you can work at becoming more deep and profound.

I'd like to quote a good playwright, Richard Brinsley Sheridan and the Epilogue of his play, "The Rivals":

The wandering tar, who not for years has press'd,
The widow'd partner of his day of rest,
On the cold deck, far from her arms removed,
Still hums the ditty which his Susan loved;
And while around the cadence rude is blown,
The boatswain whistles in a softer tone.

(tar is an abbreviated word for a tarpaulin, which means a sailor)

So let's create some hummable poems and ditties! :o)

What's deserving and worthy of a review?

a) grammatically correct
b) meaningful and inspirational.
с) author shows promise - works on their grammar, style, depth, etc.

What did I see this month? Lots of “love-dove”, “see-me”, and other extremely trite rhymes. If your poem rhymes like a country and western song and the words are boring, where the reader can predict what the next rhyme will be, they will read it once (out of courtesy and grinding teeth all the while), but they will not pass it on to their friends, saying, “here, read this!”
(Unfortunately my own work is not immune from this).

What I did not see this month: profound thought, but that's ok - it just means there . When we’re hurt we write, it seems to flow from inside and be guided, as if by someone else, by “the magic hand of chance” ©. But poetry is much more than “woe on me, without you I can’t see” (straight); it is a statement of the world around us, of political, environmental, and psychological undercurrents that surround us. I’m not saying, dust an old philosophy book and then write a great ode! Nope, just go out into the world thinking, today I will write something that will touch someone’s mind and my passion for writing will help them see the world from a unique and different perspective.

татьяна ларина

"Untimely Death"

Ленусик - the second poem is cute!

"Малострочные Cтихи (in English)"

This is very nice indeed!

"The Agony of Pain (или клин клином выбивают)"

Snark

This next poem has several blatant mistakes in English, but it's dreamy, beautiful quality smacks of Eliot and Yates:

"Mooncat (GELASMA 2 Alice The Rainbow)"

SiDDy

This poem is not bad, shows some promise.

"Failing Attempts"

Андрей Шапенко

This poem is not immune from grammatical errors, but has great feeling.

"Sirenes"

sexy cat

If you ask “me” – this is cute!

"Will you?"

This is also a nice, wistful poem

"Tell Me Why"

WereFox

This poem has mistakes in English, and yet is a rather original work

"castle"

Олег Меркулов

Childish as heck, but cute

"A DEDICATION TO KOMATOZNIY BATMAN "

Serbonian bog

"Soul-as-grave"

Aerina

Don’t know whether jellyfishes live in lakes, but this poem is touching and romantic.

"***"

See you in the months to come! :o)

Well, onwards and upwards to March!

“ Oh Spring! Fill every season with a leaf’s first swing.
Allow an artist to enjoy a child’s surprise
from old and young, transported on love’s wing.

My friends, turn off the all-unknowing towers.
Return to Nature for that extra zing
for no pixels, will surpass a bed of flowers.”

(From "Spring Swing." by Athena)

I counted lots of “near-hear” rhymes, and wish for every one like that; I’d have a dime.
But luckily, not one “love-dove”, hurray! Let’s rhyme “hurray” with something, say, “essay”?!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful spring, looks like March has sprung and created a few beautiful blooms on stihi.ru!

"To Let"
Coscus

Although I would definitely change the title to “WET PAINT”, this is glorious! The author takes a drab idea and makes it come to life. This is what Poetry should be!

"MAVERICK STATION"

Стефан Машкевич

This is Poetry! It has breadth and depth, unique view of the world around us.
This author is sophisticated, reminds me of W.H. Auden. Please read his other works as well.

"Single woman’s song"

тихонов
Who says you can’t say volumes, if you’re brief? :o)))

"my talisman "

тихонов

I am re-born
From now on
The skin of my soul
Keeps the warmth of your breath
When I slide by –Easy, carefree and delighted
–Do know: here, at my heart
Is my talisman - the scent of her flighty lips

This is exquisite. Gentle, flows well! Bravo maestro!

"Black and white"

Black and white by caracola is not that clean grammatically, but it’s alive with imagery, and ripe with ideas:

“My colors are so clean & nice...
White rice.
Black mice.
White dove.
Black sky above.
You see my face.
I see your soul.
You embrace.
You console,” – I truly enjoyed reading the “white rice, black mice”, made me think of the US poet laureate, Billy Collins’ poetry and his placing a mouse inside a poem.

"Just a blues"

“Just a blues” by April April flows nicely, albeit not without grammatical errors.

The empty hall where music plays.
So long ago I’ve seen your face.
The sounds of blues are far above,
We used to dance when were in love.

"never mind"

This is a fresh look at an end of a relationship, short and to the point.
“In every flower I draw
In every story – every line
I see your face, I hear your voice”…

"Dear Misty"

mickelson
This is a very soft and lyrical piece, for some reason reminded me of the softness of the “Piano” by D.H. Lawrence.

"Hello, hello"

mickelson

This is what poetry is all about, looking at relationships and everyday upsets with a new light. Best of luck to this author :o)

"False Prophets Confession"

Елена Китаева

Just speak them off to rainy autumn night
And go away forgetting and forgotten
By those, who used to listen to your lies.

This speaks volumes ;o)

"As I enter through two black and shiny doors..."

Маленький Принц

“The glassy silence penetrates my heart
And whispers words of melancholy bliss.
I gape at distant stars with begging eyes
And open my heart up for a kiss.”

This is too flowery and soppy in places, but has these very beautiful lines, almost whispering “Keats….Keats…Keats”

"cat"

23artworks

This is a cute little poem; the author’s in his/her other works shows a very good command of English and almost a Haiku-like quality of writing. I think you might want to look through this author’s poetry and see what you think of it.

These authors are beginning to show promise, although their poetry needs more work:

"W.I.N."
MC Radical
MC Radical grammatically needs work, but shows rhythmic potential

"The autumn blues"

April

Quite weak, but it has a melodious quality to it.

"To my loved friend"

Dimasik

Shows some promise and that there’s beauty in simplicity
And if someday we drift apart
I'll keep the warmth inside my heart
I'll wait for you until the end,
Because I love you, my best friend!

"Wings"

Young

“Sun – dawn” “far-star”, but overall it’s not an unpleasant read.

I’d like to wish you all a joyous rebirth of your spirit this season, because as Gerard Manley Hopkins wisely remarked in his sonnet, “ Nothing is so beautiful as Spring”!

Sine sole soleo :o)

Athena
