Football fans from around the world reflected on the World Cup and its meaning to them in Moscow on Sunday, just hours before the tournament’s final between France and Croatia kicks off.
One Croatian football fan from Split predicted that his nation would win the tournament, while Chinese football fans praised the “fantastic” host nation Russia.
“I didn’t think Moscow is this nice. I’m very pleasantly surprised that people are wonderful, the accommodation is great. [I am] just very, very surprised and happy,” fan from the US commented while visiting the red Square.
According to FIFA, more than 2.5 million World Cup tickets were sold before the tournament, with foreign fans acquiring two thirds of them.
The World Cup was held in 11 Russian cities from June 14 with the final taking place in Moscow on July 15.

A bus carrying the Croatian national football team left the Swiss Hotel for the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Sunday, two hours before the World Cup final between France and Croatia kicks off.
Croatia’s route to the final began in Kaliningrad on June 15 with a 2-0 victory against Nigeria. On the road to Luzhniki they also defeated Argentina and Iceland in the group stage, Denmark in Round 16, Russia in the quarter-finals and finally England in the semi-finals.
Sunday evening’s showpiece will be Croatia’s first ever World Cup final. The match kicks off at 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT).

Aleksei Sorokin, CEO of Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee, reflected on the game-changing success of the World Cup during an interview in Moscow on Sunday.
“This World Cup has changed the perception about Russia in every respect,” Sorokin said, adding “in order to understand the country, you need to personally be there, not to read about it.”
The WC 2018 has “fulfilled every promise that we made to the football community,” he said. “All the little things that we had in mind worked very well — the Fan ID, free transport, free shuttles, you name it,” he added.

Kaka: “This is something that we can’t, these are some details that we can pick to put ‘pepper’ for the game right. But I don’t think it’s gonna be a problem for the Croatians, because they’ve been playing a great game three other times, the last one against England was different for them and they scored in the overtime, different the other two that they finished with the ‘pks’ (penalty). So, I think this one day and the overtime is not going to be a problem for them to keep their heart on the field and fight till the end for this incredible journey.”
Partridge: “Absolutely. Which teams throughout the World Cup have surprised you, which players have surprised you?”
Kaka: “The team I think it’s Croatia. I think before the World Cup a lot of people said that Croatia could be the surprise and they just beat the expectations and they are here for the final. And the players, I think I’m nominating Mbappe, because what he’s doing so far, at 19 years old, sometimes during the game it seems like he’s 35-36 [years old], very mature and sometimes shows that he is 19, so, it’s very good to see and we are very blessed to see a players like this in the World Cup just 19 years old.”
Partridge: “Yes, superb. Would you then think that he is a contestant for the golden ball? Do you think he is one of the best players?”
Kaka: “I think his season with PSG (Paris Saint Germain) was normal. But what is he doing for the World Cup it’s incredible and it counts a lot when you think about [the] golden ball, individual awards, the World Cup count’s a lot so we will see the end of the final. But if France wins, I think Mbappe will be one of the finalists for the individual awards.”
Partridge: “How do you think Brazil has played at this tournament?”
Kaka: “Brazil played very very good, off course for us Brazilians when you’re not have achieved the final or win it’s, you fail. But for me, I think Brazil did everything that they could, so Tite as a coach increased the chances of Brazil to win, the players were committed, so I think Brazil did a good tournament and against Belgium, we watched a very very good game , with a high level of technique, tactics was unbelievable, I think both coaches did a very good strategy and in the end, it’s the game. But Thiago Silva had a chance two minutes before that company had their chance. If the ball, the Thiago’s ball [had] gone in, probably the result would be different and today probably we would talk about Brazil. But this is part of the game this is why we love football.”
