Belgium: 'This generation is ready' — Belgium coach Roberto Martinez ahead of World Cup
2018-06-02 15:42
Belgium national team head coach Roberto Martinez spoke about the readiness of Belgium's World Cup squad ahead of the tournament, and his feelings on being the national team coach, in an interview on The Stan Collymore Show on RT, on April 18.
Martinez said that the preparation process had gotten underway «well before» the team knew it had qualified for the World Cup.
Highlighting that preparation work is an ongoing process, he said that any team, including the Belgian squad, would have set about preparing for the next World Cup right at the end of the last one.
The coach expressed his satisfaction with the preparations of his team, despite admitting that «a very tough part of it» was that some Belgian players would miss out on selection for the upcoming tournament.
Asked whether he was excited to be coach of Belgium's national team, Martinez answered that the most captivating thing was to be involved in a World Cup, since it evoked childhood memories of famous moments in previous tournaments.
He pointed out the pressure and the responsibility that falls on his team who stand third in the FIFA World Rankings. «In Belgium you can understand the expectations and we want that to be almost a stimulation rather than being an added pressure,» he said. «I feel that this generation is ready to do that,» he added.

Belgium: Post-match reactions as Belgium-Portugal ends goalless
2018-06-03 05:37
The managers of the Belgian and Portuguese national football teams, Roberto Martinez and Fernando Santos, gave press conferences following the friendly match between the nations in Brussels, on Saturday.
Martinez sounded happy about how Belgium had performed, even though the match concluded 0-0. He said, «We always kept a really good focus on getting through that period where Portugal had two or three moments that they created a good threat... I was very happy to see that side.»
The Belgian manager also commented on the injury sustained by star defender Vincent Kompany during the match. He said, «You could feel that when he came off we were all very much worried. And especially now that it is so close to the final squad.»
Santos praised his squad's reaction to a lacklustre first 15 minutes against one of the competitions dark horses. «I would say that if we take out the first minutes of the game we would have had a very nice game,» he summarised.
With star player Ronaldo rested, Santos hoped — much like in Euro 2016 — other players would stake a claim for selection. «Remember that when we were European champions we had players that played differently so we will see, we still have time to decide.»
The tournament's dark horses Belgium are drawn in Group G against England, Panama and Tunisia.
European champions Portugal — in Group B — will start their campaign against Spain, before playing Morocco and Iran.
