USA: Trader Joe's suspect shot his own grandmother before police standoff

Emergency services and security forces remained at the scene outside a Trader Joe's grocery store in Silver Lake, Los Angeles on Sunday morning, following the arrest of a suspect after shooting an elderly woman and barricading himself inside the store.
Footage shows emergency services vehicles at the scene along with news reporters outside the Trader Joe's store.
According to LAPD Sergeant Barry Montgomery, the suspect is believed to have been in a family dispute earlier in the day, in which he shot his grandmother and another younger woman before being pursued by police.
The suspect, who allegedly took the younger woman with him while being pursued by police, then crashed his grandmother's car outside the Trader Joe's before shooting at the officers and barricading himself inside the store.
Following a three-hour standoff, the suspect eventually surrendered to police outside the Trader Joe's store.

Afghanistan: 14 civilians killed in Kunduz airstrike following battle involving US aircraft

Fourteen members of a family, including women and young children, were killed in an airstrike in the northern Afghanistan province of Kunduz on Thursday, Afghan officials stated on Friday. The deaths occurred in the Chahar Dara district during a battle against the Taliban involving US and Afghan airstrikes, according to reports.
The coalition initially denied that the victims were civilians, and claimed they were Taliban fighters, according to reports. But Afghan officials later described the airstrikes as having inadvertently led to the deaths of the civilians, including women and young children, but said initially that they could not confirm if US or Afghan planes were used in the attack.
RUPTLY requested a comment from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), however, no reply was received. An investigation is underway, say Afghan officials.
Footage shows a digger sifting through the debris at the site of the airstrike on Friday. Omerkhel, a local resident, described the scene, saying: “their families are under the earth, the machine is working to get them out of the damaged places.” He added, “I do not know how the military operations are going on here, they are not professional.”
Zalmai Farooqi, Governor of the Chahar Dara District of Kunduz Province, lamented not having been informed of the airstrike before it took place. “No one was informed, neither the national army — not even the police and ourselves. If they don't [inform us] then we cannot manage to inform the people,” he said.
Civilian casualties in Afghanistan reached their highest ever levels in the first half of this year, according to a UN report. The toll of 1,692 fatalities was the highest for comparable periods since the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) began keeping records in 2009.

According to police, the rock detached from a slope about 200 meters (656 feet) above the village. While rolling down, the boulder broke through a fence and smashed into the building, damaging its entrance.

Germany: Large anti-CSU protest hits Munich

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Munich on Sunday, to protest against the policies of the Christian Social Union (CSU) party.
The protest took place under the motto «#hustled out — together against the policy of fear!» and was organised by around 130 civil society groups.
After marching though the city, demonstrators gathered at Koenigsplatz to hold a rally. They carried banners reading «Munich is colourful!» and «CSU, you hypocrites!» and chanted slogans denouncing a perceived rightwards shift in German and Bavarian politics, especially with regard to immigration.
According to police, over 15,000 people participated in the protest.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Canada and the US had requested Israel's help in evacuating a contingent of White Helmets from Syria, in a statement issued from Jerusalem on Sunday.

He stated that the White Helmets had found themselves in life-threatening danger. «I therefore permitted their transfer through Israel to additional countries, as an important humanitarian step,» stated the Israeli prime minister.
Israel helped evcuate some 800 members of the White Helmets and their families from Syria on Saturday, according to media reports citing the IDF. They were evacuated from areas experiencing heavy fighting. They reportedly entered Jordan and from there will be re-settled in Western countries.
Austria: Vienna to abolish Turkish-language driving theory test

There will no longer be Turkish-language driving license theory tests in Austria starting from 2019, the country’s Transport Minister Norbert Hofer announced on Saturday.
The minister, who belongs to the far-right Freedom Party, said the move was a cost-cutting measure. However, candidates will still be able to take the test in English, Croatian and Slovene, the latter two languages being protected by a treaty. Turkish is reportedly the second-most popular language used to take the test, after German.
A driving instructor in Vienna, Unal Haci, said almost half of his clients had Turkish roots. And even though many speak fluent German, up to 40 percent take their final test in Turkish.
«Integration and road safety should not be mixed,» Haci stated from the Austrian capital on Sunday. «The thing is that you can only learn things if you understand them. So it is important to make it understandable, which finally helps increase road safety.»

A suicide bomber struck near Kabul airport on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and injuring 14, according to officials.
The blast occurred shortly after Afghan Vice-President Abdul Rashid Dostum returned to the country from his self-imposed exile.
The attacker reportedly detonated explosives close to the airport entrance where Dostum's supporters had gathered to greet the politician. According to officials, the Afghan vice president was unharmed, having passed through the area a short time before.
«It’s good that it was not a car bomb attack otherwise it would have killed hundreds of people because there was a heavy traffic jam near the area,» said Shafiullah, a witness to the attack.
Dostum had left Afghanistan in May 2017 amid accusations of having given orders to his men to kidnap and rape a political rival. Since then, he had been living in Turkey.

Israel helped evacuate several hundred members of the White Helmets and their families from Syria, according to the IDF. They were evacuated from areas of heavy fighting. They reportedly entered Jordan and from there will be re-settled in Western countries.

Hundreds of Israeli settlers and Jewish worshippers gathered in the courtyards around Al-Aqsa Mosque, in East Jerusalem on Sunday. Some of the settlers had stormed the compound under heavy police protection, according to reports.
Footage shows clashes erupting near the compound. A Palestinian boy was also seen being detained by Israeli security forces. He had raised the Palestinian flag in the compound.
The settlers had gathered in the courtyards to commemorate Tisha B'av, the historic destruction of Jewish temples on Temple Mount. The compound today comprises the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque and is considered Islam's third holiest location.

Thousands of activists for LGBT rights flooded onto Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, on Sunday evening, to voice their opposition to a new surrogacy law that would exculde homosexual men from applying for a surrogate in order to have a child.
Gati, one of the demonstrators claimed: «We came here to protest. We believe that we have rights like everybody else. We want to have kids and to live in peace and equality. We are against any kind of discrimination.»
The legislation allows single women to apply for governments supported surrogacy. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu originally supported the inclusion of gay men into those permitted to apply for surrogates, he ultimately voted against the proposal.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo heavily criticised the government of Iran, during a speech in Simi Valley, California, on Sunday.
His remarks were made during a talk titled «Supporting Iranian Voices.» During his statements, Pompeo presented Iran as a malevolent force, saying, «At the same time that they're trying to convince Europe to stay in the nuclear deal, they're covertly plotting terrorist attacks in the heart of Europe.»
Pompeo also outlined American methods to put pressure on the Iranian government. While also citing «financial» and «diplomatic» pressure, Pompeo also stressed the importance of media consumption within Iran.
Pompeo said, «You should know that the United States is not afraid to spread our message on the airwaves and online in Iran, either. For 40 years, the Iranian people have heard from their leaders that America is the Great Satan, we do not believe they're interested in hearing the fake news any longer.»
At one point during his speech, a protester stood up to denounce the USA's migration policy. From across the crowded hall, she shouted at Pompeo: «The Trump-Pence regime is kidnapping children.»
