Nicaragua: Students freed following deadly 12-hour standoff with security forces

Nicaraguan students were finally allowed to leave the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, in Managua on Saturday.
The students had sought refuge in the church after the government forces attacked them while occupying National Autonomous University on Friday.
Divine Mercy was under siege for 12 hours, with at least two people killed and scores more injured injured.
Students met with their relatives upon their release, brokered by Catholic bishops and the government.
One of the freed students claimed that his comrades were killed with a bullet to the head. Another claimed that pro-government forces «were shooting us with the Dragunov [sniper rifle], mini Uzis, with AK47 and we don't know what other kind of arms they had.»
Students have occupied the university since May, as a part of the anti-government protests which have paralysed Nicaragua for nearly three months and claimed the lives of at least 270 people.

Footage released by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Sunday reportedly shows an Israeli airstrike hitting a mortar shell launcher in the Gaza Strip.
The official Twitter account of the IDF said that the attack was in response to the firing of two mortar shells launched from Gaza towards Israel.
An hour later the Israeli army stated that the Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted one of two rockets launched from Gaza, following reports of sirens in the Israeli city of Sderot.

Thousands of demonstrators rallied in Tel Aviv on Saturday against the so-called Jewish nation-state bill, which will allow the establishment of communities that are segregated by religion or nationality.
Critics say the legislation is discriminatory against minorities such as Arabs, the LGBT community and Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
Opposition parties Meretz and the Arab-Israeli coalition Joint List were joined by rights groups, LGBT activists and NGOs at the march.
Chairperson of left-wing party Maretz Tamar Zandberg was one such person to attend the event, and said that the new law would harm the country's democracy. «When the government does not have solution for Gaza they try to legislate racist bills. Today we see both escalation in the south of Israel and as well in a shameful way, the attempts to anchor racism as a basic law and it is a shame for Israeli democracy», she said.
The draft law declares Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people. It will entail measures such as making Hebrew the official language while sidelining Arabic to a 'unique status' and legally binding the Hebrew calendar as the official calendar.
One of the contested aspects of the bill, which has even drawn criticism from Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, allows 'a community, including members of one religion or of one nationality, to maintain a separate communal settlement.'
The Basic Law proposal is expected to come to a final vote on Monday in the Knesset — the Israeli parliament.

Spain: Bus crashes through barrier, hangs precariously over bridge

A Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Madrid bus veered off the road, through a barrier and was left hanging over a bridge on Sunday, according to the Madrid emergency services.
The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time. The driver was slightly injured but managed to escape the vehicle unassisted.
The accident happened around six o'clock in the morning, when the bus was on its way from Plaza de Castilla to the Mad Cool Festival in Valdebebas.
The City council of Madrid fire brigade hauled the bus back on to the road. The Civil Guard is investigating how the accident occurred.

Residents of the Gaza Strip mourned on Sunday for the two teenaged boys, Ameer Al-namra and Loai Kohail, who were killed during Israeli airstrikes the day before.
The procession started at Al-Shifa hospital then moved to the houses of the two boys, before heading on to the main cemetery in Gaza city later in the afternoon.
The two boys, aged 15 and 16, were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a nearby building, according to health officials.

Syria: First buses carrying militants, families to depart Daraa for northern Syria

First group of militants and their families in Daraa have boarded bus to depart the southern city for Northern Syria, footage from Sunday shows.
Buses were accompanied by cars and personnel belonging to Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC).
According to Syrian news agency SANA, as many as 10 buses are reportedly scheduled to leave the southern governorate taking 407 militants and family members to a yet-unspecified destination in northern Syria.
Militants evacuating Daraa are those who refused terms of deal reached with the Syrian government on Wednesday.
The deal reportedly stipulated the hand-over of all medium and heavy weaponry, end of armed manifestation and return of state institutions.
The newly liberated area of Daraa had been under the control of militant forces since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011.

The rescuees were extracted from larger coastguard ships, stranded off shore with some 450 migrants on board, who were rescued close to Linosa on Friday.
