Italy: Massive blaze rips through chemical plant near Milan

A massive fire broke out between Friday and Saturday night at a chemical plant specialising in cosmetics, east of Milan. At least 21 fire trucks responded to the blaze in Liscate.
The fire started at about 11.30pm local time and reportedly engulfed the whole industrial area. High plumes of smoke were seen kilometers away from the site of the blaze while several explosions were reported.
So far there are no immediate reports about the air quality for inhabitants living nearby. The cause of the fire is also under investigation.

Iran: Citizens and media react to JCPOA meeting in Vienna

Residents of Tehran reacted on Saturday to the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) meeting which took place in Vienna a day earlier.
One citizen, Ali Farjam, said “I believe it would be way better if Iran walked away and did not say anything. I believe it would be better if there were no negotiations because they are surely not going to keep their promise.”
“As for package proposed by Europe to Iran, and which did not satisfy Iranian officials; Europe should create guarantees for Iran so that Iran would stay committed to the JCPOA. One should be to guarantee Iran’s oil sales. And the second, should facilitate some banking transactions for Iran,” said Mehran Abdi.
The participants of the JCPOA commission meeting discussed the body's next steps in the Austrian capital on Friday after the US announced its withdrawal from the deal.
The European Union's Foreign Affairs Representative Federica Mogherini, who chaired the meeting, said the signatories of the nuclear deal will work to preserve the agreement, in a statement following the ministerial meeting.
JCPOA, known unofficially as the Iranian nuclear deal, is an internationally-agreed-upon settlement which aims to limit Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for the gradual lifting of international sanctions.

Colombia: Protesters rally in Bogota against activist killings

Hundreds of people rallied on Bogota's Bolivar Square on Friday, to denounce the killing of more than 300 social leaders and human rights activists since 2016, the year when the government signed a landmark peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
According to a statement this week by Colombian Ombudsman Carlos Alfonso Negret, at least 311 social leaders and human rights advocates were murdered between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2018.
Some 100 social and community leaders were reportedly killed since the beginning of 2018, and at least 19 activists lost their lives in the last month alone, including social leader and campaigner for leftist presidential candidate Gustavo Petro, Ana Maria Cortes, who was murdered in Caceres this week.
The opposition has blamed paramilitary groups for the killings, who they claim are fighting for territorial control of the regions vacated by FARC fighters following the peace accord.

Firefighters were seen battling the fires on Friday into Saturday.
Fire officials say the blaze started at a home in the Holiday Hill Road area and spread to nearby vegetation. Strong winds and high temperatures have fanned the flames. Up to 2,500 people have been evacuated, according to local media reports.

Pope Francis condemned the violence in the Middle East, speaking at an ecumenical prayer meeting in Bari on Saturday.
«'Let there be peace' is the cry of many Abel [Cain and Abel] of today who ascend to the throne of God. For them we can no longer afford, in the Middle East as anywhere in the world, to say: «Am I my brother's keeper?» he asked.
«Indifference kills, and we want to be a voice that contrasts the murder of indifference,» added Pope Francis.

The RSPCA claim they have been getting an increased number of calls to pick up seemingly drunk seagulls, prompting them to urge local alcohol producers and distributors to dispose of their waste 'far from wildlife and birds.'
Reportedly, one RSPCA officer was quoted saying that the birds 'absolutely stink of alcohol' when they collect them.

Emergency officers continued their ongoing operation to rescue members of a youth football team and their coach from a cave in Mae Sai in northern Thailand on Saturday.
One of the rescuers, Farihan said that the operation would continue tomorrow.
While it was initially assumed that the children could remain in the underground complex for a longer period of time, rescue operations are being intensified in order to save their lives before oxygen runs out.
The team of 12 boys and their 25-year-old coach entered the cave as part of an excursion but became trapped after a sudden, continuous downpour of rain flooded the underground area.
They were found alive after a 10-day operation carried out by Thai forces and international rescue teams.

«There is a concept that the cooperation of the 16+1 Format is dedicated to dividing Europe. But this is a misunderstanding. The truth is that there is no conflict in the strategic interests of China and the EU,» Keqiang said.
«All we want free trade and well respected business-rules», he added.
The 16+1 summit was established in 2012 as a multilateral platform, aimed at cultivating ties and deepening cooperation between Central and Eastern European nations and China.

Somalia: Deadly twin blasts rock Mogadishu

Twin blasts rocked Somalia's capital of Mogadishu on Saturday, leaving at least nine people dead and ten more injured.
The first blast occurred when an explosive-laden vehicle detonated at the gates of the Interior Ministry compound before three militants reportedly stormed the building. Security forces engaged in hours-long battle with the militants. All three attackers were reportedly killed by security forces.
The second blast hit a police building opposite the Interior Ministry, which is located near the presidential palace and parliament headquarters.
Militant group Harakat al-Shabaab has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
Authorities say that the death toll may rise as the rescue operation continues, with some media reporting up to 15 people dead and more than two dozen wounded.
France: Right-wing activists support police officer accused of manslaughter in Nantes

Dozens of right-wing activists staged a rally in front of the police headquarters in Nantes on Saturday to support a police officer suspected of shooting a 22-year-old man.
A group of antifascist demonstrators organised a counter rally across the street. Police officers were deployed at scene to keep the groups of protesters apart.
At the end of the protest, one of the counter protesters was reportedly detained.
According to the police, officers opened fire on a 22-year-old man, identified as Aboubakar Fofana, after he reversed his car into a police officer. A bullet hit the driver in his carotid artery which led to his death. However a widely reported witness statement contradicts the police account, saying the car was stationary at the time of the incident.
A police officer has been taken into custody for questioning in relation to Fofana's death. Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland has reportedly asked for a transparent investigation into the case.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that progress had been made during high-level talks between American and North Korean officials while speaking to the media before leaving Pyongyang for Tokyo on Saturday.
«We had many hours of productive conversations, these are complicated issues, but we made progress on almost all of the central issues. Some places a great deal of progress, other place, there's still more work to do be done,» Pompeo said.
Pompeo also said that they discussed a missile engine testing facility, and that they «talked about what the modalities would look like for the destruction of that facility.»
Pompeo added that another meeting in Panmunjom was set up for July 12.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Dusseldorf on Saturday to protest against a proposed bill in North Rhine-Westphalia which will hand greater power to police officers.
Demonstrators marched through Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse and moved towards the state parliament building. According to reports, more than 10,000 protesters took part in the march.
The police law, proposed by CDU/FDP parties, was widely criticised for violation of freedom and citizens' rights. According to the proposal, police will be given authority to prolong detentions by up to one month, to expand video surveillance and to gain access to messengers.

UK: Investigators retrace alleged Novichok victims’ steps in Amesbury

Investigations looking into the alleged Novichok poisoning of Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley continued retracing their steps in Amesbury and Salisbury on Saturday.
Police, paramedics and firefighters were stationed around the house of the couple thought to be poisoned by the nerve aganet, as well as other locations in Salisbury, including John Baker House on Rollestone Street.
It is thought Sturgess lived at this address for a period of time.
The couple were taken to Salisbury hospital, after being found unconscious and in a critical condition at an address on Muggleton Road in Amesbury last Saturday.
Police have since declared it a ‘major incident’ and cordoned off a number of locations in the Amesbury and Salisbury area. UK counter-terrorism officers have also joined the investigation.
Amesbury is a short distance from the UK chemical weapons laboratory Porton Down and the site where Sergei and Yulia Skripal collapsed after being allegedly poisoned by a nerve agent in March.
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Commemoration honours Serbian victims of Bosnian war

A commemoration was held in Bratunac on Saturday, in memory of 3,500 Serbs of the Srebrenica region and surrounding area who were reportedly killed during the Bosnian war.
Speaking to the crowd in attendance, President of Respublika Srbska stated: «I ask of you and I ask of myself to speak up loudly, and not allow them [the Bosnian Muslims] to label our people as 'genocidal', the 'people of evil', every July. Let us not allow them, every July, to make our people the ones who always have to apologise to someone, while our pain and wounds are overlooked.»

Footage shows soldiers, tanks, and other military vehicles which were posted at the border crossing.
The retaking of the Nassib border crossing comes as part of the Syrian government's ongoing push to retake the southeastern province of Daraa.
At least 270,000 people have been displaced in the Daraa region since June 20 due to the intense fighting, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
