Ecuador: Bus in deadly crash was carrying ‘half a ton’ of marijuana

A bus that crashed earlier this week just outside Quito killing 23 people was also carrying drugs, authorities confirmed on Friday.
Authorities found over half a ton of marijuana hidden inside a secret compartment under the bus's floor. The market value of the drug found is estimated to be around $1.7 million.
This is the third time this year a bus was found carrying drugs from Colombia to Ecuador. The driver has been hospitalized under police guard. All passengers on board the bus are under investigation.
A total of 23 people were confirmed dead and 16 injured after the bus overturned and hit a van east of Quito last Tuesday, according to the Ecuadorian capital's fire department.
The accident happened just before 03:00 (08:00 GMT) on Tuesday between the towns of Pifo and Papallacta, in a sector locally known as 'death's curve.'

The 53-year-old Kneissl will marry the 54-year-old multi-millionaire entrepreneur Wolfgang Meilinger. The ceremony is set to take place at a winery called Gasthaus Tscheppe.
After delivering congratulations to the couple, the Russian president is due to head to Germany to hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Italy: Human remains found overnight at site of Genoa bridge collapse — reports

Rescue workers pulled more bodies from the rubble of the Morandi bridge collapse in Genoa, from Friday night to Saturday morning, Italian media report.
According to reports, the bodies of a couple and their nine year old child were found inside a smashed car. The body of a 30-year-old man was also reportedly found in the rubble, bringing the death toll to 42. However, officials haven't yet confirmed the numbers.
Meanwhile, rescuers continue working at the site, sifting through the rubble and searching for people still missing after the incident.
A major section of Italy's A10 highway collapsed during a storm at around 11:30 local time (09:30 GMT) on Tuesday, killing at least 38 people.
The cause of the bridge collapse is still being investigated. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has declared a 12 month state of emergency in the region, and pledged €5 million ($5.70 million) of government funds for the area.

Кофи Аннан – уроженец Ганы, учился в США и Европе, с 1960-х годов работал в различных структурах ООН. Генеральным секретарем всемирной организации был два срока – с 1997 по 2006 год. Он стал первым темнокожим африканцем, избранным на этот пост. В 2011 году Аннан был спецпредставителем ООН по Сирии, однако его усилия не смогли остановить конфликт в этой стране.

Annan became the first black African secretary-general of the UN, serving in the role from from 1997 to 2006. He was described as a «global statesman and deeply committed internationalist» in a statement by his foundation published on Twitter.
Ruptly shares archive footage of several of Annan’s visits to Moscow.
Annan was born in Kumasi, Ghana, in 1938 into a family descended from tribal chiefs. He attended a leading boarding school in Ghana and began a course at the Kumasi College of Science and Technology, before winning a Ford Foundation scholarship to study economics in the US.
He then went on to attend a graduate programme in Geneva, Switzerland, after which he joined the World Health Organisation, a part of the United Nations.
Annan held several posts within the UN before becoming the High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, a role he stayed in for seven years.
In 1997, he was appointed Secretary-General, where he served two terms. Thanks to his work in this position, the Noble Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Annan and the UN in 2001.
The UN Migration Agency paid tribute to Annan on Twitter, describing him as «a great man, a leader and a visionary. A life well lived. A life worth celebrating.»

Conflicts in Syria and eastern Ukraine are expected to be on top of the agenda at the working meeting between the two leaders, as well as talks on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
One local resident was particularly excited about the meeting, hoping that it would result in «peace around the world.»

Mattarella and Salvini were seen comforting relatives of the victims, while Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte was reported to be attending the funeral, too. 19 coffins were brought to the hall, with crowds of mourners bidding farewell to their loved ones. Some families reportedly decided to boycott the ceremony, blaming Italy's former government for the tragedy.

India: Army rescues stranded civilians after deadly Kerala floods

The Indian Army has been called in to assist rescue operations in Kodagu, on the border with Kerala, on Saturday after widespread flooding left hundreds dead across the country.
Heavy rain has battered the region for days, causing deluges of water that have left the land susceptible to landslides.
Efforts to rescue trapped residents over the past few days have been hampered by bad weather, but rescuers finally succeeded in bringing 3000 people to safety on Saturday.
With many of the major roads blocked, flooded or damaged, many of those were forced to walk 15 kilometers to safety.
Many are still stranded without access to food and water.
The flooding in neighbouring state Kerala has been described as the worst in 100 years by chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan.

Hundreds of neo-nazis gathered in Berlin on Saturday to commemorate the death of the Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess.
The rally, which is held every year on the 18th of August, was eventually cancelled after meeting heavy resistance from left-wing counter-demonstrators, some of whom threw stones and bottles at the protesters. Some arrests were made after scuffles with police.
Demonstrators marched under the motto «Law instead of revenge. Murder is not barred. Give the files free». The latter refers to British files kept on Hess from his time as a prisoner in England.
Rudolf Hess was found guilty of crimes against peace and sentenced to life in prison, where he committed suicide in 1987.
South Korea: Thousands of women march against acquittal of politician accused of rape

Around 2,000 protesters marched through Seoul on Friday to protest against the acquittal of presidential candidate Ahn Hee-jung.
Ahn Hee-jung was accused of rape by a former female aide, but the Seoul Western District Court found him not guilty of forced sexual abuse, sexual intercourse by abuse of authority and other charges.
Before the scandal Ahn was widely seen as a strong candidate to replace President Moon Jae-in when his term ends in 2022.

Maria Butina’s lawyer Robert Driscoll confirmed on Saturday in Washington Dc that his client had been transferred to a new prison in Alexandria, Virginia.
«But I am not aware of what the reasons were for the transfer,» he said.
Dristoll also announced that a fund was established to assist Butina financially in her litigation.
«I also hope that there is a number of even small donations at Maria Butina fund. It shows her that people are thinking about her and have not forgotten about her,» he added.
The next court hearing is planned on 10 September.

A US military-political delegation headed by political adviser to the US State Department visited Kobani in northern Syria on Saturday.
The delegation was led by former US ambassador to Bahrain William Robak who also visited Raqqa to see how the city was recovering after being governed by ISIS.
The delegation visited the military hospital in Kobani and met with the co-chair of Kobani Executive Council Anwar Muslim.
Robak and the delegation donated medical equipment to the Kobani hospital and promised to support the city and its government.

Finland: Far-right and anti-fascists march on anniversary of terrorist attack
Far-right group Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) and anti-fascists activists marched through Turku on Saturday to commemorate the first anniversary of a terrorist attack.
Around 300 supporters of the NRM marched through the city. The NRM was banned from Finland last December but pending the final appeal, can still organise demonstrationS.
Around 1,000 counter protesters staged a rally chanting against the far-right group and throwing bananas and other objects to them. Some minor fights broke, but there were no reports of people hospitalised.
Last year, Abderrahman Bouanane, a failed Moroccan asylum seeker, stabbed to death two women and wounded eight more, claiming he did it as a soldier of the Islamic State.
USA: Far-right groups march against left wing violence

Activists from a coalition of right wings groups gathered Saturday afternoon in Seattle to rally against left wing violence.
The march was part of a nation-wide protest organised by different right-wing group that declared themselves to be against all political violence, but that they believe it predominantly comes from the left today.
Dozens of Seattle Police surrounded the group, protecting them from antifascist activists that attempted to confront them. There were some minor fights but no serious injuries were reported.
