The idea of visiting some language courses in the UK has crossed my mind no once. I'm interested in English and traveling. I like London as far as I know about the city. I'd like to take courses, see the country and save money at the same time. But I've never known how to do it. I haven't known till the recent time.
Other days I got a letter from Margarita Mareeva. She liked my blog, we talked a little bit and it turned out that Margarita has been living in London for many years and knows lots of information about the city and UK in common. So I asked her about such kind of courses and living in London during studies's time. And I got the awesome answer!
I asked her permission to put it on my blog and she agreed! Thank you Margarita for that;)
So how to take English courses in the UK? Here is the answer.
Margarita Mareeva:
«Learning English in England is a great opportunity to improve your language, find out more about the country and do the sights. The most of language schools teach new students every year. It’s very convenient. They usually form two new groups a week. All students have to pass a special test of their English’s level before starting the studies.
It’s very important to define what you’d like to attend such courses for. The sort of courses depends on your purpose. I wouldn’t advise you to go to school without any knowledge of English. It’s much better to have at least Pre-Intermediate and know the grammar a little bit. All this you can get at your homeland.
According to my experience, the most difficult is to make phrases in English, discuss some topics and understand the English speech. You can overcome all these obstacles attending the language courses. The most schools let you take a so called General Language’s course. It’s mainly based on the conversational English. Also you learn grammar, listen to lots of audio material. All this helps you to improve your speaking, listening skills and get rid of the language bar. It’s very important to understand people from other foreign countries and speak with them. This way you train your daily English and learn to understand different accents. By the way, the most difficult thing is to understand some local English dialects.
The most of schools can teach you General English in the morning and Busyness one in the evening. You’d better have Intermediate for such kind of variant.
If you’d like to get a higher education at the Universities of the UK, you have to prepare for IELTS. This is a serious exam which needs much more time of hard preparation. Many Russians come to London in September to pass the exam just in June.
I think that each big British city has such language schools. Some of them are well-known in Russia with good-educated teachers, but some of schools are really bad from not native speakers at all. So you should be very attentively choosing one.
Many schools can put you up for a period of studies. In common it’s just one room in some privet house. You can talk over all details about the food. To tell you the truth, the British people are very money-saved about this point. They don’t like to spend much money on heating and water. It can be really funny sometimes, when you’re just not allowed to leave water on, while you’re soaping your body or head. It’s the time to remember Zadornov! So be ready for the things like that.
Courses will cost you about 150-200£ (7000-10000 RUB) per one week of studies (3 hours a day).
Living costs 150£ and higher. Public transport is pretty expensive in the UK, about 1.4£ per one trip. So it’s better to buy Oyster card and Bas Pass for one week, which let you go by bus as more as you want. For the tube you’ll need to get Top Up.
I’d advise you to come exactly to London if you have an opportunity. For sure, you’d get your English better here and would feel a special local colour»
She told me all this in Russian, I just translated it for my blog. Thank you Magrarita once again. I'm certainly to accept your proposal with my girlfriend in future!
That's it, guys. Keep learning English and take care!
