ATMCS III
Algebraic Topological Methods in Computer Science
Paris, France 7-11 July 2008
http://www.lix.polytechnique.fr/~sanjeevi/atmcs/
(poster available for download here)

***SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS***
(New) deadline for abstract submissions: 22 May 2008
Notification of acceptance: 5 June 2008
Deadline for registration: 15 June 2008
Conference: 7-11 July 2008
contact information: atmcs08 at lix dot polytechnique dot fr

Recent research has shown that techniques from algebraic topology
adapt strikingly well in studying computational systems and other
subjects within Computer Science. This third ATMCS conference hopes
to bring together researchers employing geometric/topological methods
in both abstract and concrete areas of computer science. The week-long
conference will feature some invited talks, several accepted talks, a
poster session, and countless opportunities for informal
collaboration; we plan to publish our proceedings in a refereed
journal, pending approval. All authors submitting an abstract by the
deadline will have an opportunity, at the least, to present a
(refereed) poster at the poster session.

***SCOPE***
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, concurrency theory,
distributed computing and complexity, rewriting systems, image
analysis, and sensor networks.

***INVITED SPEAKERS***
A current (and incomplete) list of plenary speakers includes:

John Baez, University of California Riverside, U.S.A.

***INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSIONS***
Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts summarizing current
work that explores connections between algebraic topology and computer
science. All abstracts should be written in English and should not
exceed 1 single-spaced page. Although abstracts preferrably should be
submitted at http://atlas-conferences.com/cgi-bin/abstract/submit/caxd-01,

Dear all:

The XX Escola de Algebra, the 20th edition of the biannual Brazilian meeting of algebraists, will take place at IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, from August 11 to 15, 2008.

The meeting is shaping up. You will see more information available at the event web page,

http://www.impa.br/opencms/pt/eventos/store/evento_0024

In particular, if you registered, you should find your name by clicking on "Registered Participants." The shown list is fed automatically from the online registrations. So, if your name is not there, and should be, please register.

We want to give you information on accomodations, registration fees, posters and financial help:

1) Financial help: A few of you have already been promised financial help. This is as much as we can do right now, with the funds that are available to us. However, we are applying for more funds to federal and state agencies, and we expect, according to their calendar, to have answers at most by the end of June. So, by the end of June, we should start sending messages offering financial help.

2) Posters: The deadline for submitting them was May 16. We decided to extend it to May 30. After this date, we will start taking decisions. Exceptionally, good proposals may be accepted even after May 30, but their acceptance will be subject to space and time constraints. Just remember to follow the instructions on

http://www.impa.br/opencms/pt/eventos/store/evento_0024?link=11

Being the Escola mainly a research conference, we are looking forward to proposals that present new results or significantly new approaches to old results on relevant subjects.

3) Registration fees: They will be collected on August 10 (Sunday) and during the meeting. They may be paid by cash or check. We will take reais, dollars or euros. Checks must be Brazilian. We cannot handle credit cards. More details will be given later.

4) Accomodations: The Organizing Committee will NOT directly arrange accomodations for the participants of the XX Escola de Algebra. You may arrange accomodations directly or, if you wish, it is possible to reserve accomodations online through a private company, "CMO Eventos". To do this, go to the web site of the meeting,

http://www.impa.br/opencms/pt/eventos/store/evento_0024

click on "Accomodations" and then on "Click here". You will find a list
of hotels and their daily rates. You may then contact "CMO Eventos" by
phone or FAX, or use an online form accessible by clicking on "FOR
RESERVATION." Either way, inform your full name, institution, email
address, phone number, the name of the event (XX Escola de Algebra), the
hotel of your choice, the type of bedroom, arrival and departure dates,
and credit card information.

Just bear in mind that the arrangements you make are an agreement between you and "CMO Eventos." Neither IMPA nor the Organizing Committee is part of this agreement. However, if something does not go well, please let us be aware of it, as we might take measures.

It is easy to find information about the listed hotels on the web. Here
is additional information, concerning IMPA and the Escola, that might
have some influence on your decision about accomodations:

TRANSPORTATION:

There will be NO arranged special transportation to take participants to
IMPA. There is a wide range of hotel choices, with regard to prices,
location and conditions, so it is likely that the participants will
spread out, making it impractical to arrange for special transportation.
Also, there are regular buses and plenty (really so) of taxis.

i) The hotels in the neighborhoods of Gloria and Flamengo are close to
the Bus 409 Horto route. The final stop for this bus is 200 meters from
IMPA, and buses pass frequently. The fare is R$2,10. You may take the
same bus on your way back. By taxi, the fare to IMPA might be around
R$20,00, depending on traffic.

ii) The hotels close to the beaches, in the neighborhoods of Copacabana,
Ipanema and Leblon, are close to the Bus 125 Horto route. The final stop
for this bus is 100 meters from IMPA. However, buses do not pass
frequently, perhaps every half an hour in peak times, and do not seem to
follow any discernible schedule. Again, the fare is R$2,10 and you may
take the same bus on your way back. By taxi, the fare to IMPA might be
around R$15,00, depending on traffic.

DAILY STIPENDS:

Most of our funds, if our applications are successful, will come from
federal and state sources. Because of this, MOST participants funded by
us will receive per diem AT MOST the maximum allowed by CNPq, which is
R$187,83. Students will very likely receive less. We do recognize that
this is not much for an expensive town like Rio de Janeiro. However,
there is nothing we can do. We are letting you know about this
beforehand, so that you can take this into account when planning your
stay here.

Best regards,
Eduardo.
