(Sam, U.K. - udxf 08/10/2007)

Here are the logs from the 6 Oct and 8 Oct (last night) listening sessions.
No listening was done on the 7th as I was busy working the Cal-QSO Party
(Ham contest).

Lat night conditions were VERY good, a nice low aurora index (level 1) along
with very little T-storm noise allowed me to hear TWO beacons (*) that have
only been heard here once before. 344-YOP was heard in spite of the fact
that XX-344 was considerably stronger. Two Canadians with 'tails' on the
same frequency makes it difficult to copy the weaker one, UNLESS there is at
LEAST 20 Hz separation between them, in which case the Yaesu FT-2000 has no
problem separating them!! This has been proven as I routinely copy 3
Canadians on the same offset, with NO outboard filtering. . .

Likewise, ICL-353 was clear copy in spite of the fact that 353 KCs is a
"train wreck" here. A very busy frequency.

The logs: 40 total.

I have been continueing my slow bandscan with the "Static Fighter" on.
Whilst looking for U-371.5, Helsinki/Vantaa, Finland (nothing yet!) around
351.900 kHz, a weak signal was audible. After awhile the ID was nice and
clear: station BL-351, BlЖnduСs, ISL, 2078 km. This is a rare one as it has
only be logged four times as far as REU is concerned.

Conditions were excellent, with a number of Canadians coming in at good
strength around local midnight.

freddo e caldo? Grazie in anticipo per le risposte.

[Callsign: DBGZ] 1020a ALE/USB SND. 09Oct2007 (ALF)

* See a picture, together with a good (German language only, sorry)
* article about the the German Coast Guard on
* www.marinekameradschaft-muenchen.de/kuewa.htm

* BTW, there is not really a German Coast Guard as an organisation,
* but a system of independent governmental agencies which belong
* to 4 different ministries (MOI, Finance, Agriculture & Traffic)
* including the federal "Offshore Police", Customs,
* Polution Control, Fishery Control etc., but to make it easier for
* their "customers" to understand that they all carry the letters
* "KUSTENWACHE" (=Coast Guard) on their vessels and uniforms.
* But all of them have totally different tasks and missions.
* Since this year they (and some other state and federal maritime
* agencies form a joint mission control center in Cuxhaven in which
* all individual control centers (but all are/will be still
* exist) form a "round table". The discussion is if the LEZSEE is
* that joint MCS or the MCS of the Federal "Offshore Security
* Police" to which the BP26 patrol vessel belong (I think the last).
* According to my understanding (but ???) all different MCS or
* at least a "contact bureau" of them are located in Cuxhaven too.

* It seems that the German coastal and offshore "security" system
* will be re-grouped and move in parts (all?) to HF ALE.
* A 2nd member of this newly formed Joint-MCS (called "GLZ-See")
* the Wasserschutzpolizei ("water security police") of
* Niedersachsen (=State of Lower Saxony) is active on ALE
* (idents: WSPAN & W03). We hope for more ;-)))

pre-0000z AVAILABLE; guess on spelling) calling ANDREWS and raising
ASCENSION (mostly unheard here) and request HF data with ANDREWS. At
0005z MACKINAW worked ANDREWS (mostly unheard here) and ANDREWS moved
MACKINAW to 11220.0.

11220.0 was active at 0008z with MACKINAW (good/fair) calling and

Freq became quiet. Unknown if ANDREWS moved him elsewhere for HF

Every now and then when tuning in to RIT on 11155 kHz in the morning, ( today ongoing at 0743 utc ) I hear these two gentlemen on 11150 ( USB ) in english. ( But I am not shure if EE is their first language tough ) Both ends on comms heard, - and they spice up their comm with very frequent non-creative swearing, mostly " f***in' " for every fourth word. Most of the time I have just tuned by, sometimes stopped for a few minutes; (yes these guys are long talkers ) but today I got interested when they talked about
"mortar" and "citadel". The other times I have heard them, they was mostly commenting on everyday life. Of course mortar and citadell could very well relate to masonry ( restoring an old fortress ?? ) and not beeing mil related at all. Anyone else who has heard these guys ?? Yesterday night propagation from the north was exceptional.
JAN-362, JMY, Jan Mayen, 2255 is a regular here in autumn and winter.
It is always 10-15 dB over my noise floor and on a good day this is 20 dB.
Last night it was 38 dB and booming in like a local.
I have never heard it so strong before.

BJO-316, BRI, NOR, Bjornoya, Bear Island, 2661 km was also audible again.

Offshore stations WC-358 and NQ-371 are still on at 14:10 UTC.

Conditions last night were much quieter than they have been in a long time.
I stumbled upon JNR-382 up in AP93 (western Alaska) early in the evening, so
decided to check for more. Many of the stations heard are not usually heard
until closer to dawn.

Thanks for the tip! It's also audible here in Veldhoven. Never heard before,
so a nice new one.

Also the UNID CSO and the Finnish beacon Sodankyla were new ones.
Sometimes I wonder why I haven't logged such a beacon before ?!

As usual I took the summer off from NDB chasing because the noise
levels here in Texas make listening be near useless. Also the wife
and I took a small vacation and visited Washington, DC as well as the
Virginias, including Jamestown, the site of the first British
landings. Interesting things to see, especially all the British flags
(Union Jacks?) flying there.

But now that the cooler months are coming (I'm still waiting for
cool) I dusted off the Icom and I'm back in business.

Last night conditions were still noisy, lots of static crashes, but I
did catch a UNID, BNZ on 230kHz. The carrier was riding about 10Hz
high. The ID was seen (I'm using Spectran) on both sides of the
carrier, the upper was 1040Hz above the carrier and the lower 1030
below the carrier. The period was about 7.8 seconds and the ID length
was about 3.7 seconds. The signal was clearly visible for about 7
minutes with an positive BNZ ID.

I failed to report one catch at the end of last season, it was CHI-
221. So my starting log for this season is as follows:

Date Time ID Freq Location and notes
070306 0145 CHI 221 Los Chiles, Costa Rica Offset +960Hz
071013 0101 BNZ 230 UNID Offset +1040 and -1030

S9+20 static at first--it hasn't been this bad in the morning for quite
awhile--but it eventually mostly went away. Some hints of Polynesian
propagation, but the static was covering it up. Poor for northern
Pacific/Asians; some western Pacifics. The MW beacons at the high end of the
band had GA better than KUT today. This the first I can remember of that
happening--usually KUT is the only one heard, or stronger than GA. And for
those who actually read my meandering posts, I note the narrow audio filter
to be less effective ONLY at the very top of the MW band, where GA and KUT
are heard, not at the top of the NDB range (530). I wouldn't ever heard 520
BHZ Brazil, for example, without the use of the narrow audio filter.

http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tr_map/eeu018.jpg

BBC on FM in the Maldives for the first time

The BBC’s internationally famous English radio
programmes can now be heard on FM for the first time
in the Maldives capital of Male. BBC World Service
news bulletins, sporting and current affairs
programmes will broadcast daily on Capital Radio 95.6
following the signing of a new agreement with their
owner Asna Maldives Pte Ltd.

Helen Kathuria, BBC Business Development Manager for
the South Asia Pacific region said: “The BBC has a
strong tradition of loyal listenership in this region
so it’s great that we can reach yet more people in
crystal clear FM quality sound. We are also
delighted to be partnering with one of the first
private radio broadcasters in the Maldives."

Mr. Abdulla Nasheed, Managing Director of Asna
Maldives Pte Ltd said: “We are proud to be associated
with the world’s leading international radio
broadcaster and thrilled that our listeners can now
enjoy the BBC’s unique mix of news, sports and feature
programmes across the city.“

BBC programming can be heard on Capital Radio 95.6
every day between 04.00 and 10.00 local time. In
addition, BBC news bulletins will broadcast at 11.00,
14.00, 17.00 and 21.00 with sporting news at 13.50 and
20.50. Health Check can be heard on Mondays at 1530.

Нидерланды
Glenn, regarding the Radio Netherlands B07 DRM schedule info in DXLD 7-121: I
checked the forum that Kai Ludwig referred to, and found links to the purported
AM and DRM schedules of RNW for the upcoming season. Stunningly, there is no
mention of usage from Flevo after October 28!!! Could RNW be taking a cue from
Deutsche Welle and dumping transmissions from the homeland in favor of external
sites? Wonder if this is also a money issue? I would have thought Flevo had
quite a bit more use left in it, being only 22 years old. Would they really
shut it down, or is it headed for a diet of religious broadcasters and
expatriate political programs on a lease basis?

The DRM from Bonaire is also intriguing. Perhaps the new transmitters really
are already in place? In an earlier post (included in DXLD 7-118) I had noted
that for a few days in late September, English to North America on 9845 seemed
to be coming from a non-Bonaire site with a weak signal, but the usual
blockbuster reception had since returned. It might be my imagination, but the
audio on 9845 now seems improved, with a crisper, clearer quality. Could the
new units on Bonaire actually be on the air?

Seems odd that RNW would refurbish Bonaire while dropping the Flevo
transmissions. Wonder what the plans are for the Madagascar facility?

The supposed RNW DRM schedule is here:
http://pdis.rnw.nl/werkman/drmschedule.php
And the AM sked: http://pdis.rnw.nl/werkman/amschedule.php
Note that both are a mix of A07 and B07 info.

Andy Sennitt, we need info please!!! (Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas, Oct 8, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

It looks as if this is correct: Flevo will go dark after October 28. I can`t
find any plans for it to carry RNW or anything else. RNW will use not only its
own sites, Bonaire and Madagascar, but also Sines, Nauen, Skelton, Wertachtal,
Dhabbaya, Singapore, Meyerton, Sackville, and even IBB-Tinang, Philippines for
an Indonesian broadcast, in exchange for IBB using Madagascar for a Persian
broadcast (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

NETHERLANDS [non]. 9405 DRM, FRENCH GUIANA. R. Netherlands, 0200, 10/5/07.
One hour every evening. Essentially 100% copy without dropouts. This is really
close to FM quality and very enjoyable listening. Excellent (George Herr, CA,
WinRadio g303e, R8B and NRD535, 50' wire and AmRad Antennas, NASWA Flashsheet via DXLD)

Why guessing when it's all online (on an URL published in the
referenced German discussion anyway):
http://pdis.rnw.nl/werkman/amschedule.php

In B07 there will be Dutch to Europe via Nauen, Wertachtal, Skelton
(on 75 m, maybe a first?), Horby, Sines, Grigoriopol, an unspecified
Moscow area site and Tbilisskaya. English to Africa will also be
carried via Meyerton, 1859-1957 on 11805 (100 kW). Talata Volonondry
will relay Radio Farda, 0500-0600 on 12015.

And indeed no Flevo anymore...
