POWER TOOLS 7.0 IS A SET OF 98 ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES FOR LOTUS NOTES & DOMINO Power Tools simplifies management of the Notes/Domino environment by automating routine tasks. Power Tools can manage or monitor mail files, groups, ACLs, agents, LOG.NSF, templates and more.
Bob Balfe has posted two pages on how to use the Group Tabs feature in the Notes client. The first page shows you the screen shots, the second has a video on how to do it.
Most, if not all, of the Domino systems I've developed send automated emails via server-based scripts. Normally this is by creating a NotesDocument object, making sure it has a "SendTo" field and then calling the .Send() method, which routes it via the Domino SMTP task to the intended recipient.
It's always worked well but every now and then there's the inevitable support call to say "User X says they didn't get the email about Y after doing Z".
My approach to this used to be "Hey, my duties end once when I call dot send!" and I'd explain that it's an admin issue that's "out of my hands". But I now like to help out as much as I can and will do my best to work out why no mail was received while explaining that delivery of email is as reliable as Royal Mail.
What I tend to do now when sending email via script is add a BCC to a special GMail account of mine to all emails sent. If the mail is in that account then I know it was sent and that Domino routed it out of the server (at least to my address anyway). Not ideal, but it helps get to the bottom of things.
A system I'm working on at the moment is ASP.NET based and so there's no inbuilt SMTP server. Well, there is, kind of, but I chose to use GMail's SMTP server to send mail. The C# code connects, authenticates and sends the mail via a connection to a specified port at smpt.gmail.com. All works well and you can tell via Exception catching whether it went wrong or not.
An added bonus of the GMail method is that it stores a copy of the email in the sent folder of the account used to authenticate, so I always have a record of what happened and I assume that the fact it's in that folder means it was in fact sent (whether it was received or not is a different matter, of course).
In Domino I guess you could do this if you created the NotesDocument in a dedicated Notes Mail file and save it once sent? Does that mean it was delivered though? There's nothing to say it's not dead mail in mail.box.
What's your approach to sending email and fielding calls form irate users who blame you for problems with the minefield that is email delivery?
My eagle-eyed readers might have noticed a few changes being made recently on this site? Particularly on the homepage:
Notice that my recent Tweets are now in the right-hand sidebar, along with the results of the most recent survey. There's also a new tab called Surveys to host blog entries with surveys attached.
Also, I moved the "DEXT" tab over to the right to try and set it apart from the actual content of the site. Notice that hovering over it brings up a list of the noteworthy demos contained within.
There have been numerous other changes you're less likely to notice. For example:
Links posted in to comments now get converted to working links.
Less images used and a splattering of CSS3 applied.
Added "social" sharing links to all blog entries to let you easily share on Delicious, Twitter etc.
Why?
They're all things that have been on my to-do list for ages and I decided it was high time I gave this site a breath of fresh air. Last thing I want to happen is for it to become dated and showing signs of age. I like to think it's always been on the cutting edge (if not the bleeding) of web trends.
I would like to see, how many invitees have accepted, tentative accepted and denied an invitation directly in the e.g. one week view of my calender. I can also have this information (today) by selecting a meeting and chhose "Owner Action" see invitee status, but this is 2 steps more.
User Activity in Database properties show access of users to your database. In mail, sometimes on would like to know, WHICH document somebody else read.
Even if you do not grant access to everybody, Full access Admins can read your mail.
I could imagine a $AccessedBy field similar to the $Updatedby, holding the last n names as a database property or Mail/Calendar preference.
It's paranoid, I know. I could not find it being illegal, though.
Currently, a task can only be assigned to *Anyone or an individual.
When creating an identical task that should be performed by multiple individuals (ie complete workplace health and safety evaluation), it would be far more efficient to be able to select multiple assignments and have multiple instances of the task created, one for each assignee.
At the moment, a new task must be created for each assignee.

It is not currently possible to assign a task to a community. This could be of benefit for managers who make task assignments to small teams or groups within their organization.
Further to assigning a task to the community as a whole, being able to make a task assignment to every member of a community would also reddce the need to copy-paste task information (see the related task on Task Cloning).

It is often the case when someone submits and idea they fail to notice other ideas that may be related to their own. So rather than always expecting the author to nominate the links I think it would add value in many situations if the option existed for a particular idea jam site to allow readers to not only add comments but also provide value through the addition of links to other related ideas.
This idea is a followup to a blog post by Bob Balfe asking whether folks used the Notes feature to "Group documents from each application on a tab" option available in the Windows and Themes preferences. The feedback was that the behavior of the tabs with respect to selecting and closing when in this mode needed improvement. I gave it a little thought and I believe the following will make this feature really shine:
Activate grouped tab expansion via a mouseover, with a configurable (notes.ini) delay, defaulted to ~400ms. This is long enough that, if all the user wants to do is click the tab grouping to bring in focus, they won’t be bothered by an expanded tab list, but short enough they won’t start cursing.
If the user clicks on the dropdown in a group tab (always visible as it is now) the list is activated immediately.
Once activated, the group list would then show an X next to whichever specific sub-tab the mouse was hovering over (just like the Windows 7 taskbar). This avoids the visually awkward display of multiple red X icons in close proximity, and prevents users with poor aim from closing the wrong tab by accident. Key benefit is that user can easily close a specific sub-tab without it first being brought into focus, to say nothing of having to then move the mouse across the screen to find the X in its current location.
At the bottom of the tab list would be a choice, in italics or otherwise visually different from other “real” choices, to “Close Group”. There should be an “are you sure” confirmation prompt with a “don’t ask me again” checkbox option displayed.
Another idea was to show thumbnails of the individual subtabs instead of simple text. I like the idea in theory, BUT I think it might be too gimmicky, since for example all email messages look the same as thumbnails and it’s the title that really matters. Also it would probably be expensive from a performance standpoint. OK at the OS switching level but probably overkill inside Notes. The existing thumbnail viewer is good enough.

Our admins recently created a new copy of the 8.5 mail template that I added some additional code to for automating the creation of our required connection documents and to log some user details. Well, it has been discovered that something happened to that template which caused the $RespondedTo field to not get populated with a value when you Reply, Forward, or anything of that nature.
Well, I used the new handy eclipse search function to find all the places that this field was being used. However, while it was searching I turned on the debugger and opened a message so that I could reply to it and try and see where this field was coming up and quickly realized that could take an eternity with all the different code used in the mail template.
That got me thinking that having a way to set a "conditional" continue in the debugger where you could say that you want to continue until you find some specific word, phrase, or piece of code, then stop might be pretty cool. Well, at least in the eye of the beholder it would be cool. We shall see what everyone else thinks.
The ToDo list in Activities currently does not show the comments and entries that are responses to the todo.
With wide-screen monitors becoming more the norm than the exception, being able to click on a ToDo title and have the description and comment hierarchy load asynchronously via Ajax in to a different content area would be a great enhancement to ToDo management.
Having to navigate away from the ToDo list is very inefficient from a user perspective and also a full page reload is required in each case.
Attached are two images, the current implementation, and a proposal for the positioning of the ToDo content.

In a support context, replying to mail often requires repetitive content for a common issue. Reply With Stationery would help greatly to reduce retyping / copy-pasting.
