In World Cup Topics for 2008, Bill Begg wrote the following;
As we know the ownership of Iguana had changed a few years back, very little had changed, but this season new ownership had been more visible, while the greatest promotor the sport has ever seen, appears to be stepping aside & Berlin may well be his last appearance as the WIC Guru.
In recent times Coni may not have always endeared himself to the Swiss people, but for the past decade, he has created what no other person singularly had ever done, by stamping his own brand on the World of speed skating marathons.
This is the first time that with the World cup winners Cecilia Baena & Yann Guyader sorted before Berlin arrives, that their is more interest in the pre race dinner, than there is in the race.
The Iguana Owner Heinz Shutinburger & CEO Markus Ott have indicated they will tell us about some new & exciting developements for the SIC / WIC for the 2009 season, so lets hope so, as the competition needs it, with the other big Question 4 or 5 men teams in 2009 ?
The long overdue call for SPRINT & HILL primes with Money & Bonus points, along with seasonal status for a Sprint King & Queen & Hill Climb King & Queen also.
Presently the new Management are playing their cards very close to their chest, while some camps are talking big & others trying to decide there next moves, while the Mushroom system appears to be operating.
This scheduled 7.15pm Technical meetting before the Free Pasta Dinner, assumes status of one of the most important to take place, regarding the running of Marathons in our sport.
I was in the front row when Coni weaved his magic several years ago in Belguim, I was on to him like a ton of bricks, wanting to know if this flashy Mountain guy, was all Piss & Wind, or was the messiah the sport needed.
It was enough a couple of years later that our entire family changed their lifestyle for the past 5 years.
I hope what we will hear tonight convinces Myself & others to direct their lifestyle towards the same direction for the next 5 years & beyond.
All I hope is that their is no cheaptalk about Million Dollar Cash Cows, which turn into Million Dollar WHITE ELEPHANTS, I heard that speach a few years back.
There must be plenty of Substance & respect shown for the Skaters calls & Sponsors getting some Kick for their Buck.
THese Guys are smart business people, so at present I am supporting them & just hope they produce the goods to stop the groundswell of unrest.

And don’t let your years discourage you. Age tends to invest athletes with durability, stamina and self-knowledge, all of which come in handy in long races.
The following is from Bill Begg in the thread Worlds 2009-
Everyone has been saying 95 % China, I am not sure which one, as Switzerland originally pinched it off Chinese Taipei.
But my sources are telling me the Biggest drum of all is beating for Italy, could some short cutting sprinters, once again break World records, while a similar Capeto takes the long line.

Even when I’m in the off-season and do not yet need to be training for my next race, I am still very active. I find that by regularly running, biking, lifting weights, and swimming that I maintain a moderate baseline fitness level, which makes it easier to regain “peak form” when I need to.

My mind is already set for June. I know what I did last year and I know what I have to do this year. The only awkward part is I know how hard I trained last year and I know I should feel like the task I’m trying to do is almost impossible but I don’t. It’s doable. I know how hard I have to train and it won’t be that bad. Yes it will be hard and tiring but that’s what I skate for. I wouldn’t skate if it was easy. To make the jump I want to make, more of my changes will happen before I even tie my skates.

Something that might be news for the international scene, but has been public knowledge for quite some time in Germany is that German custom boot maker Daniel Junker (Junker skates) went out of business. Bont has made a generous offer to all those, who lost their money or have not received their Junker skates.
