Syria: Pro-Assad forces hit by Turkish airstrike near Afrin — reports
2018-03-04 11:45
Pro-Assad forces were reportedly targeted in an air raid by the Turkish Air Force in the town of Kafr Zita, near Afrin, Saturday. Thirty-six people are reported to have died in the attack. The Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-led alliance, has confirmed that there was a Turkish air strike on Syrian militias in the early hours of Saturday but provided no further details. Footage shows buildings reduced to rubble, as well as destroyed vehicles, and blood smeared on the ground. Some of those targeted were reportedly stationed in a former Russian military observation post. The reported bombing follows a recent agreement between forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), to help in the defence of the Kurdish enclave of Afrin against the ongoing Turkish offensive, known as 'Operation Olive Branch.' Ankara has warned of a serious military response if Syrian government forces arrive in the region. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to «lay siege to Afrin city» during a recent address in parliament. In January, Erdogan announced the beginning of the operation against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). Turkey views the YPG, which is active in northern Syria, as an extension of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) group.

Of more than 450,000 SPD members, 66 percent supported a renewal of Germany's grand coalition, while only 34 percent were against it. Head of Voting Commission for the SPD Dietmar Nietan commented today saw a larger majority in favour of the agreement than the last time they voted on a coalition with the CDU, four years ago.

2018-03-04 12:49
Voters shared their opinions on the Italian general election as they cast their votes at the Liceo Classico Pilo Albertelli in Rome on Sunday. Voters agreed they have found the new voting system «complicated.» «The problem is upstream, namely the Rosatellum,» one voter said, referring to the new electoral law, a mixed proportional and majoritarian system which increases the likelihood of no party gaining an overall majority. One voter called the campaign and the electoral law «shameful.» «It was shameful because if you go to the government, I can complain if you steal and cheat. But while you are trying to capture the trust of voters, creating this mess is really fraudulent.» Polling stations across Italy will be open from 07:00 to 23:00 local time (06:00 to 22:00 GMT). Polls suggest former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's coalition is the most likely to secure a majority.

China: 'Beijing doesn’t want trade war with US,' says parliament spokesperson
2018-03-04 15:13
Spokesperson of the Chinese parliament Zhang Yesui said China does not want a trade war with the United States but would be ready to defend its interests, during a press conference in Beijing on Sunday. «China does not want a trade war with the United States, but if the US takes actions to hurt China's interests, China will not sit idly and will take necessary measures,» Zhang said during the press conference, at the eve of beginning of the National People's Congress' yearly two-week session. «China is committed to a path of a peaceful development and China pursues a defence policy that is defensive in nature. China's development will not pose a threat to other countries,» Zhang continued. Zhang called trade and economic relations between China and the US «mutually beneficial by nature,» and that «for such a big relation it is natural that there are some frictions.» Yesui's comments come days after US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminium imports, a decision likely to affect China, the world's largest steel importer.

Australia: Melbourne’s Macedonians rally in protest to possible name change
2018-03-04 15:22
Hundreds of Macedonian-Australians gathered in Melbourne on Sunday to rally for Macedonia's right to keep its name in an ongoing dispute with Greece. Flocks of people covered the streets of the Victorian city, waving Macedonian flags and chanting in support of the Balkan nation. «Macedonia is not Greece, in any shape of form, in any shape of form, in any dedication of what it is, is not Greece in any way,» claimed one protester. «Accept the reality, we are Macedonians, we are not going anywhere, we are not giving up our name,» another protester said. Rallies have been also organised in Sydney and Perth on Sunday. Many in Greece see the name 'Macedonia' as posing a threat to the Greek state arguing that it implies a territorial claim over the eponymous region of northern Greece. After the Balkans Wars of 1912−1913, the territory of historic-geographic Macedonia was divided amongst Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. The naming dispute dates back to when Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. As a result, international organisations and states that do not recognize the constitutional name «Republic of Macedonia» refer to it as «the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia» or FYROM for short.»

2018-03-04 15:53
5 Star Movement (M5S) candidate Luigi Di Maio cast his vote for the Italian national elections in Pomigliano d’Arco, near Naples, on Sunday. Thirty-one year-old Di Maio was greeted by a group of supporters who were chanting «prime minister, prime minister.» The M5S is likely to emerge from the elections as the largest party, according to polls. But it seems unlikely to gain enough of a majority to govern alone and it has up to now refused to form a coalition with other parties. Italy’s south, where youth unemployment runs 50 percent or higher and the overall unemployment rate almost doubles that of the north, is expected to be a key battleground for the elections. Polls suggest Berlusconi's coalition is the most likely to secure a majority in the election.

Spain: Satirical 'Tabarnia' secession rally held against Catalan independence
2018-03-04 17:47
Tabarnia, a satirical anti-Catalan independence movement which calls for the separation of Barcelona and Tarragona from Catalonia, held its first large-scale demonstration in Barcelona on Sunday. Around 15,000 people attended the rally, according to Barcelona police. Demonstrators waved Spanish flags and chanted pro-unity slogans. Tabarnia puts forward the idea that if Catalonia were to separate from Spain, anti-independence areas would in turn separate from Catalonia and so on, in an attempt to highlight what they see as the irony of the Catalan independence movement. Tabarnia‘s platform was created by the ’Barcelona is not Catalonia’ collective, as a parody of the Catalan independence movement. The name is composed as a portmanteau of Tarragona and Barcelona regions, areas in which the independence movement is less popular, and Narnia, for its fictitious character. The group has been present on social media and in local media outlets. They have even created a flag for the imaginary territory and became a worldwide trending topic in December.

Greece: Nationalists protest in Athens over Macedonia naming dispute, religious policy
2018-03-04 23:51
A nationalist rally was held in Athens on Sunday, in protest over the Macedonia naming dispute and government policy concerning the teaching of religion in public schools. Protesters say the current government does not provide sufficient support for the Greek Orthodox religion through its education policy. They also protested the continuing economic problems facing the country. The organisers said the rally was non-partisan; nevertheless several members of the far-right Golden Dawn party could be seen among the protesters. Many in Greece see the country name 'Macedonia' as posing a threat to the Greek state, arguing that it implies a territorial claim over the eponymous region of northern Greece.
