South Korea: Russian ban could be lifted if no further doping incidents — IOC

Questions on the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s decision to uphold the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee from the Olympic Games dominated a press conference given by the IOC's President Thomas Bach after the final leg of the Committee's 132nd session in PyeongChang, Sunday, as the XXIII Winter Olympics drew to a close.
The IOC President, Thomas Bach, commented on the recent doping scandal concerning the Russian Mixed Curling team in which Aleksandr Krushelnitckii admitted to an anti-doping violation, stating that «there was no indication that these two cases were due to a systematic approach or that the delegation was in any way trying to assist or to cover up, but that on the contrary that there the OAR delegation was very proactive and in the case of the mixed curlers, for instance, gave the medal back right away.»
However, he did note that this case influenced their decision to keep the suspension in place until after the end of the Olympics.
Following the IOC's decision to maintain the suspension on the Russian Federation, the country's flag will not be present when the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) march at the Closing Ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympics.
However, Bach remained positive that a total lifting of the suspension could be seen, after and only if there are no additional positive doping cases registered from OAR athletes.

South Korea: Protests as North Korean delegation arrive for closing ceremony

The North Korean delegation, led by the controversial Vice-Chairman of the Worker's Party Central Committee General Kim Yong-chol, were met with protesters on Sunday while en route to the Olympic Closing ceremony in Pyeongchang.
Protesters can be seen carrying placards, banners, and waving flags of the United States and South Korea as they attempted to block the North Korean motorcade. The footage also shows Kim Yong-chol leading the delegation.
72-year-old Kim Yong-chol is a controversial figure in South Korea as many blame him for the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan in 2010, in which 46 South Korean sailors died when their ship sank after being struck by a torpedo.
The exact origin of the torpedo as well as who fired it remains disputed.

Syria: Tens of thousands stand in solidarity against Operation 'Olive Branch' in Afrin

Tens of thousands of protesters from Northern Syrian cities descended on Afrin on Sunday, in a display of solidarity in the face of Turkey's ongoing Operation Olive Branch offensive.
The protesters denounced the Turkish military offensive as well as criticised the silence from the international community on the campaign.
The crowd waved People's Protection Units (YPG) flags and held pictures of founder of the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) Abdullah Ocalan as they marched from Newroz junction to Dersim Hospital.
«We come today to join our support for the resistance of Afrin. It is resistance to the times and steadfastness. I tell them that you are the rightful owners, the owners of the land, and the principals, and we are all with you, Afrin,» said one protester.
According to the organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW), an estimated 100 civilians have died since the start of the operation.
The Turkish military started launching airstrikes and rockets on Kurdish positions in Afrin shortly after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the launch of the military operation dubbed 'Olive Branch.' The Turkish President also declared that the next destination for Turkish forces would be Syria's Manbij.
Turkey views the People's Protection Units (YPG), which is active in northern Syria, as an extension of the banned militant group Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Syria: Mass exodus of villagers from Jandaris into Afrin as Turkish forces advance

The city of Afrin received a mass exodus of villagers from the nearby Jandaris region as they fled the advancement of Turkish forces and bombardment of their homes on Saturday. Turkish forces seized a number of sites at the Jandaris axis over the past week, according to online newspaper Al-Masdar News.
Villagers can be seen arriving in all sorts of vehicles from cars to trucks to tractors, piled high with their belongings as they enter the city of Afrin.
One of those fleeing, Mohammed explained: «we have escaped from the village of Jumana, we are being bombed at random, the planes are always above the sky, we are all fleeing».
Another fleeing villager named the Turkish President: «Erdogan and the Free Army are bombing us, they have demolished our homes» while another stated bluntly «his goal is to exterminate the Kurdish people».

Australia: Greek community in Melbourne protest Macedonia name dispute

A rally consisting of thousands from the Greek community in Melbourne on Sunday protested against the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) receiving a compound name containing the term 'Macedonia', in an ongoing name dispute.
The rally was organised by the Pan-Macedonian Association of Melbourne and Victoria. Protesters waved the Greek flag and listened to various speeches.
«Greece is Macedonia, it belongs to us. There's nobody who can put their hands on this, this belongs to the Greeks,» said one protester named Athena.
Many in Greece see the use of the name 'Macedonia' by the FYROM as a threat to the Greek state, saying it implies a territorial claim on its own eponymous region of northern Greece.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the US announcement to bring forward the date of moving its embassy to Jerusalem to mid-May 2018, speaking at his weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday.
The embassy move is now set to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's Independence, celebrated on May 14th. Netanyahu stated: «President Trump has decided to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, on the upcoming (Israeli) Independence Day. This is a great moment for the citizens of Israel, it's an historical moment for the State of Israel. We will celebrate it together all of the Israeli citizens. It has historical and long-term implications.»
Netanyahu continued with praise and thanks of US President Donald Trump: «In the name of the cabinet and the name of the people I would like to thank President Trump for the leadership and the friendship. President Trump you are a great friend of the State of Israel»
Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6, 2017, in a live televised address from Washington DC, simultaneously starting the process of relocating the US embassy from Tel Aviv. The announcement sparked a wave of protests throughout the world.

Police clashed with protester in Barcelona during a demonstration against the presence of King Felipe VI of Spain in the city for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) on Sunday.
Police cordoned the area around the Palace of Music (Palau de la Musica) to prevent protesters from advancing. Several protesters were displaced by police, giving way to scuffles and moments of tension.
Protesters waving Estelada flags and yellow ribbons were seen banging pans and blowing whistles as they called for the release of jailed Catalan leaders.

Turkey: Erdogan seeks extradition of Kurdish leader arrested in Prague

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes that the Czech Republic will extradite the former leader of a Syrian Kurdish political party, he said in a speech from Urfa on Sunday.
«Now the head of the PYD (Democratic Union Party), is captured. This is our wish that Czech Republic will give him back to us», Erdogan told a group of loyal supporters in the eastern city close to the Syrian border.
Early on Sunday, the former co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) Saleh Muslim was arrested in Prague after Turkey issued a warrant for his arrest.
Muslim is wanted for his alleged involvement in a car bomb attack in March 2016 in Ankara, which killed 36 people. He currently has a $1 million (€813,000) bounty on his head.
The Turkish government views the PYD and its armed wing the People's Protection Units (YPG) as an extension of the banned militant group Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Russian presidential candidate and Party of Growth leader Boris Titov met the first Russian entrepreneur from the so-called 'Titov list' to return to their homeland in Abrau-Dyurso in Krasnodar region on Sunday.
Entrepreneur Andrey Kakovkin, who is undergoing a criminal trial in Russia, returned from London and met Titov shortly after his arrival.
According to Kakovkin, nothing is left from his business in Russia.
«I could not stage-manage my business to make it fit the Russian currency falling, oil prices falling,» he said.
According to Kakovkin's attorney Aleksander Khurudzhi, there were some 'contrived reasons' for the criminal case.
Titov said he hoped other Russian businessmen who left the country because of criminal trials would also come back.
On February 3, 2018 in London, Titov met 40 self-exiled Russians and asked them to return to their homeland.
On February 7, he released the so-called 'Titov list' which consisted of 16 entrepreneurs who had expressed their wish to return.
Kakovkin was the first from the list to arrive back in Russia. At first he was detained, but released soon thereafter.
Kakovkin stands accused of embezzling 10 million roubles (US $177,400).

King Felipe VI of Spain spoke at the Palau de la Musica Catalana during a visit to Barcelona on Sunday, as the city hosts the Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC).
During his speech, the King spoke about 'institutional cooperation' and its importance in attracting and building on the opportunities provided by the likes of the MWC.
«There is no doubt that the story of this (Mobile World) Congress in Barcelona, is the story of a success reached through years of work. A success that we owe in the first place to the people of Barcelona, to their dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit,» the King said.
Felipe VI was met by protests both in favour and against his visit to the Catalan capital.

Macedonia: Juncker praises reforms but holds back on Greece dispute

The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker praised Macedonia on the reforms it has undertaken in order to join the EU but refrained from making any recommendations regarding the ‘Macedonia’ name dispute with neighbouring Greece in a presser with the Prime Minister of Macedonia Zoran Zaev in Skopje on Sunday.
«As far as the name is concerned, by opposition to our normal behaviour, I don't want to lecture those involved. Do your job with Greece and Greece has to do its job with your country,” Juncker said.
Many see the name 'Macedonia' as posing a threat to the Greek state since it implies a territorial claim over the eponymous region of northern Greece.
Zaev also took positives from the EU’s feedback on Macedonia’s application to join.
“Within the EU's strategy, it can be seen that the EU recognises the positive results (developments) the Republic of Macedonia has made up until now and that gives credit to our progress,” added Zaev.
UK: Six hospitalised after huge shop explosion rocks Leicester

At least six people were hospitalised after a shop blew up in the Midlands city of Leicester on Sunday evening.
Two of the injured are said to be in a 'critical condition' while the others have sustained more minor wounds.
Smoke can still be seen billowing from the scene, several hours after the initial blast.
No cause for the explosion has been provided, however, police are treating the incident as 'major' and have cordoned off Hinckley Road.
The two-storey Polish supermarket is said to have been destroyed in its entirety and has damaged other nearby properties as a result of the explosion.
Spain: Anti-independence collective Tabarnia in pro-monarchy protest

Members of Tabarnia, a satirical anti-Catalan independence movement, gathered in Barcelona on Sunday to display their support for King Felipe VI of Spain amid the monarch's visit to the Catalan capital.
Alvaro de Marichalar, an aristocrat and former brother-in-law of Infanta Elena of Spain, was among participants. He defended the monarchy saying, «He is our king, he is the Count of Barcelona, Duke of Montblanc, and he is the Prince of Girona. He is the whole Catalan history personified on the monarchy.»
Tabarnia platform was created by 'Barcelona is not Catalonia' collective, as a parody of the Catalan independence movement. The name is composed as a portmanteau of Tarragona and Barcelona, areas in which independence movement is less popular, and Narnia, for its fictitious character. The group has been very present on social media and in local outlets. They even created a flag for the imaginary territory and became a worldwide trending topic in December.
