We got some cool, new features in the Lotus Notes (and Domino) wiki this week, and I wanted to share two features that are particularly useful. Now you can print articles more easily (and better)! Y

This weekend my brother, Tim, emailed me to ask if I knew how this Geolocation demo worked. There was a air of panic about his email. It got me thinking, as I thought I knew, but quickly realised I didn't.

If you view the demo in Chrome you get asked permission to share your location and there's a link to a help page, which states the following:

The local network information used by Google Location Services to estimate your location includes information about visible WiFi access points, including their signal strength; information about your local router; your computer's IP address.

It seems Firefox uses Google's services too to determine your location and also has a help page on the subject.

This reminded me that Google had been in hot water recently for collecting more than just data about Wifi access points names using its Street Car. It figures that they must use triangulation based on the data the browser submits, which is based on your router providing details of nearby access points and their signal strength. Is that right?

I suggested this to Tim and he later confirmed that the demo didn't work from his non-wifi enabled PC.

It was a timely email as Google are all over the news in the UK at the moment. Turns out their Street Car "accidentally" captured and stored unencrypted wi-fi traffic as it drove around. Woops.

Until recently and at the time of Google's visit my wifi connection was open and unencrypted. Access was limited to specific MAC addresses. Living, as I do, in a quiet little residential cul-de-sac I've never considered their to be much risk.

What I never reckoned on was people driving down the road and sniffing on my traffic. What's to stop anybody doing that?

In the case of Google I'm not too concerned about traffic it might have seen as I wasn't using my PC when the camera car visited. How do I know? Because I know exactly where I was.

Since then I have now enabled encryption on my wifi network and started using SSL on all my mail account connections. Batten down the hatches folks - it's time to get paranoid!

Operation the behavior of applications using the mouse gestures - is the operation of the future, since it is very convenient.. This already exists in the extensions to the browsers Opera ("Mouse trail" exstention) and Chrome (in ChromePlus). It is desirable that the gestures:
  1. were inherited from the above browsers (by default), but also that they are customizable.
  2. worked in the Notes Client, including those from XPages.

Idea:
If you delete a mailfile via adminp it will always create a new redirection file on the Domino Server. Over the years (if you create and delete a lot of users) your system will be filled by a large amound of files. It would be nice to have a option which runs ... for example in the night ... and deleted all these files if they have a specified purge field and a purge date ... the default "livetime" for such adminp generated files should be set via notes.ini entry ... or config document ... 
 
If you create a database/application redirection file by hand, you should have a option to coose the lifetime (0 means keep it forever)...
 
That will save a lot of files on the system... be aware that some OS types has a limit of files which can be stored in a folder ...

Idea:
We have always used the ability to send another user an application link via an email so they can click on it and access a database.  We have always wished there was a way to select multiple db's and generate multiple links to paste on an email, instead of doing it one by one and going back and forth from email to db's.  What do you guys think?

Why don't we have the ability for more options while creating db replicas?  Such as adding replication formula's, on the db at time of creation.  I have checked whether creating replicas via adminp or manually and nothing.

Idea:
You have the option of displaying the server name on the workspace chicklets, yes I use the workspace religiously, and if you right click an application in the bookmarks you can also view the applications properties to see the server name.  However, if you create an application object for the 'desktop8.ndk' or 'bookmark.nsf', then get a view, and finally get a document you have no option of seeing the server.
 
Not sure how this is, but it would be awesome if there was a method to create a collection of bookmark/desktop applications that are referencing old servers.  With this ability we, the developers, can assist our admin friends by writing a little code to cleanup the user workspace and eliminate many issues/calls.

Idea:
If a user (DWA/iNotes) is renamed Domino should rename also the name in the ID, which is stored in the vault.
 
 
Note:
This feature was mentioned in the IBM documentation but seamed to be a documentation bug. IBM fixed the documentation now... a rename requires now that the user must use a Lotus Notes client to finish the ID file rename.

Idea:
The notes client struggles to render the complexity of the server document and configuration document.  Poor old clunky :)  It's not a size issue (my server docs are about 5k).  This coud be easily overcome without breaking the rendering engine by using separate forms for separate tabs rather than lumping them all together.
 
I think this is generally a best practice item, especially since the tabbed tables get nasty when you switch between edit and read.
 
Could be achieved using Form Formula in the server views, or maybe something a bit more clever for this special area.  Eg a "Preferences" style interface dialog with search box.

Mail template should check user access and warn.
