I recommend you to restart system.
Maybe you should in a simple style do "shutdow now" without restarting kernel
Script in rc.d will start mysql correctly
If it will not happen, check permissions to /var/db/mysql and availability of
the 'mysql' database there
P.S. Don't forget: to start mysql you should be root =)
