Heineken UK is planning to remove its White Lightning cider brand from its portfolio because the company worries the current image of the drink as a contributor to problem drinking can have a negative influence on the companys high status.

Over the recent years the publics concern about the role of the white cider line and the responsible alcohol drinking grew, anв the company has been doing its best to restore the products image, but this was all in vain. Heineken has cut out all the extra-fill promotion campaigns as well as using of three-litre packs, and even reduced the ABV content in White Lightning from 7.5% to 5.5% in April 2009. This brand will leave the list of Heineken brands in spring, on 31 March 2010.

As pioneers in the cider category, we want to lead from the front. Premium and mainstream ciders continue to drive the overall growth of the category and our future investment will focus on our brands in these categories to respond to consumer demand and continue to drive value. Furthermore, in these tough trading times, categories like premium cider offer better, more sustainable profit opportunities for retailers and they should devote enough space to the brand leaders., noted Mark Gerken, sales MD (the off trade department) at Heineken UK.
