South Korea: IOC discuss Russian athletes ban removal
2018-02-24 12:08
Members of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) met in Pyeongchang on Saturday to decide whether to lift its ban from the Russian National Olympic Committee.
Opening the meeting, IOC President Thomas Bach announced that the Executive Board would discuss preparations of the IOC session, which is due to take place at the IBC on Sunday, as well as 'the issue of the OAR' [Olympic Athletes from Russia delegation at the 23rd Winter Olympic Games].
In this regard, members of the board were expected to hear the report, prepared by Nicole Hoevertsz, chair of the IOC panel, responsible for defining Russia's participation at the Closing Ceremony of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics under the national flag.
Previously it was confirmed that the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) had fulfilled one of the pre-conditions for the admission back to the Olympic family — it transferred a $15 million (€12 million) as fine, imposed on it as part of the sanction for the so-called state backed manipulation of the anti-doping system at the Sochi 2014 Games.
The Delegation of the Olympic Athletes from Russia is hoping that the ban could be lifted by Sunday afternoon so that Russian Olympians could participate in the closing parade with their national flag on Sunday evening.
The decision will be made in the light of two recent doping cases that were filed during the Olympic Games in South Korea. Curler Alexander Krushelnitsky was stripped of his mixed doubles bronze medal for taking the restricted meldonium and bobsleigh pilot Nadezhda Sergeyeva failed her test for trimetazidine.

South Korea: IOC upholds Russian ban denying flag at closing ceremony
2018-02-25 05:54
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach announced the IOC decision to uphold its ban on Russia in the 2018 winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang on Sunday, thus denying the country to march in the closing ceremony under its flag.
The decision was contributed to two cases of doping committed by Russians athletes in the games, though according to Chair of the Olympic Athlete from Russia Implementation Group Nicole Hoevertsz «These ADRVs [Anti-Doping Rule Violations] were individual and isolated cases that did not show a pattern of systematic and organised doping activity.»
«The Implementation Group recommends lifting the Russian Olympic Committee's suspension once all results of the doping tests of the OAR [Olympic Athletes from Russia] athletes during the Olympic Winter Games of PyeongChang 2018 have been confirmed as negative,» she said.
The decision came hours before the closing ceremony.
