South Korea: Statue of Liberty imagery never banned, says IOC
2018-02-14 09:59
Olympic officials in Pyeongchang denied on Wednesday that they banned the image of the Statue of Liberty on the helmets of the US Women’s Hockey team.
«It seems to have been a misunderstanding, it was reported on the press that they were banned, but they were never banned,» said IOC spokesperson Mark Adams.
Adams disputed reports that the IOC had ordered team USA goalkeepers Nicole Hensley and Alex Rigsby to remove the image of Lady Liberty from their helmets, as it violated the committee’s rule on banning any political sloganeering from inside the Olympic venues.
According to Adams this was a Rule 50 discussion, which states that «no kind of demonstration of political or racial propaganda is permitted on Olympic sites, venues or other areas.»
«When teams submit their uniforms or various other things there is a whole process to make sure that items don’t contradict rule 50,» added Adams, before explaining that these decisions all come from a committee within the IOC that looks into these before making a ruling.
During the press conference, Adams also commented on the two Russian athletes that failed to get an invitation even though they were cleared by the IOC, readdressing the question to the IOC implementation group and saying that an internal discussion on this issue is yet to be scheduled.

South Korea: Gold medallist Shaun White celebrates historic triple win

American snowboarder Shaun White reflected on making Olympic history with his third gold medal in snowboarding on Wednesday in Pyeongchang.
“Honestly it hasn’t even sunk in yet, I’m tripping out still,” said Olympic Snowboarder Shaun White on a press conference following his gold medal run at Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The American athlete became the first snowboarder to ever win three medals at the Winter Olympics, as well as clocking the 100th gold medal for Team USA in the history of the competition.
White has won the gold medal at the Snowboard halfpipe competition. After completing two runs at the bottom of the table, the snowboarder went into his last ride to top the 95.25 score of Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, who ended up earning silver.
During the press conference, the US athlete also reacted to the resurface of a sexual harassment suit, which he refused to comment on. He also made comments on the social media controversy of being accused this morning of dragging the American flag.
South Korea: Topless Tongan reveals secret to winning his heart

Tongan cross-country skier Pita Taufatofua who swooned fans around the world with his shirtless entry into the Olympic Games offered some advice to potential paramours during a press conference in Pyeongchang on Wednesday.
The athlete, who became famous for marching shirtless and oiled-up in minus 20 degrees temperatures during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, told the reporters that if somebody wanted to marry him, they first have to help Cyclone-devastated Tonga.
The Pacific nation was hit by worst cyclone in more than 60 years.
Also commenting on his opening ceremony stunt, the athlete expressed that it could never have gone any other way. “I said it before, if my ancestors can sail across the Pacific Ocean for a 1000 years not knowing where the next piece of land is going to be, not knowing when their next meal is going to be, going to war — then I can walk for 25 minutes through an opening ceremony without a shirt on, and represent a thousand years of heritage, because that’s what they wore for a thousand years.”
At the end of the media event, the Tongan skier also announced that he could be getting ready to attempt a third sport for his third qualification to the Olympic Games, something that was never done before. He first represented Tonga in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in Taekwondo, before making the transition to cross-country skiing.

An snow volleyball exhibition match was held near Pyeongchang on Wednesday as part of efforts to have the sport gain Winter Olympic recognition.
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) showcased the exhibition match, which saw some of the sport's international stars play each other at the Austria House in Daegwallyeong-myeon, not far from the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic complex.
In a tough bout on snow, Austrians Stefanie Schwaiger and Nikolas Berger, who are both former European Champions, together with Emanuel, a Brazilian three-time Olympic medal winner in beach volleyball, managed to beat a second dream team. The losing side consisted of South Korean star volleyball player Kim Yeon-Koung, Brazil’s three-time Olympic medallist and three-time World champion, Giba, and two-time Olympic medallist Vladimir Grbic. South Korea: Koreans enjoy unified ice-hockey match screening
2018-02-14 19:11
Dozens of Koreans gathered in celebratory spirit to an open screening of the first Unified Korea Olympic women's ice-hockey match on Wednesday in Seoul.
Around 50 second and third generation North Koreans were present at the screening, whose parents and grandparents had immigrated to Japan in the 1940s during the country's colonial rule on the Korean peninsula and had remained there when Korea was divided into two in 1953.
Many attendees were equipped with the Korean Unification Flag and held banners reading «One Korea — Yes». The viewing of the hockey match was followed by vibrant celebrations.
The unified Korean team was formed following an inter-Korean accord reached last month. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that 12 North Korean players would join the 23-player South Korean team.
The Korean women's hockey team has been marked as a thaw in tense bilateral relations between the North and South.
Did this joint's 'Flying Tomato' burger help Shaun White win Olympic gold?
2018-02-14 20:30
A surprise visit by US Olympian Shaun White to the Ssanta burger restaurant raised the owner's morale during a difficult business period, as he recalled in Bongpyeong-myeon, Wednesday.
Joong Cheon Yoon originally ran a ski and snowboard rental station, but was forced to turn his business into a burger restaurant in order to stay afloat. The nearby alpine resort has been closed for tourists by the Korean government for the period of the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, putting local businesses under pressure. Many other rentals closed down or decided to stay open, despite the lack of business in the normally crowded nearby mountain resort villages.
As a gimmick he and chef Cha Gwen Sol added a one million WON ($920; €750) 'Flying Tomato' burger to the menu, in honour of US snowboarder Shaun White who goes by that nickname. They didn't expect to see the man himself walking into the place on Sunday, however.
Cha Gwen Sol said: «Shaun entered here. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it. Shaun ordered to me a Flying Tomato burger and I cooked the burger for Shaun White. My hand was shaking during, while cooking.» The burger was given to White on the house.
On Wednesday afternoon Shaun White won his third Olympic gold medal in the men's halfpipe. Thanks to an outstanding performance in the third and final attempt, White received a score of 97.75 and overcame Japan’s Ayumu Hirano and Australia's Scotty James, bringing the anniversary 100th gold medal to the collection of the United States in all Winter Olympic Games.
