How to Buy Skates Online
2007-05-13 18:42
You can try on a pair of shoes before you buy them and you can live with your fiancee before you marry him or her. But these days you can't always try out a pair of skates before you give up your credit card number. The problem: few stores (of the old-fashioned brick and mortar variety) carry wide selections of skates these days. As a result, you may have to buy your skates online, basing your choice on little more than photos and product descriptions.

WIC Showdown in ZUG (CH) Inside view from Pascal Briand (Powerslide Phuzion)
2008-04-23 14:38
Zug was the 1st race that all POWERSLIDE PHUZION team members race together in full strength. At the Easter holidays we had a training camp in Nantes (FRA), the home base of Arnaud Gicquel, Pascal Briand, Yann Gueyader and other top skaters from France, but Nicolas Zamudio alias "Zamu", our new colombian team mate could not make it for the camp. Then we had our first GBC race in Germany but I did not compete there. So the team met in the hotel in Zug the day before the race. I think we have a very good team this year. It's a nice mix of "old school" skater like me with the young school guys like Zamu, Felix Rijhnen, Pascal Ramali, Kwinten Tas. For the GBC races we also have Martin Matyk, one of the strongest sprinter. It´s a cool mix. The morning before the race we went for a warm up all together and we spoke about our tactics for the race. The race started later in the afternoon. It was an easy start due to the yellow flag but right after the start the speed was very high already. For the first 15km the group was skating with an average speed of about 50km/h which made is almost impossible to break away. finally a group went out in the 1st uphill with many leader from different teams, but no one from our team followed at this time. The group in front didn´t work well together and the massive peloton of about 80 skaters came back easy and catched them after a few km. All teams seemed to be in very good shape and no one really made it to escape. So everybody prepared for a sprint finish. Kwinten Tas from the Powerslide Phuzion team lead for the sprint, but way to early... so we couldn´t really react when the other skaters jumped to the left part of the road. In the tunnel about 500m in front of the finish line, the Powerslide Phuzion team was blocked and no way to pass. We have to get a much betting timing, but as mentioned before, it´s a very young team. But I´m sure they will learn fast.

After race, it was the cool WIC party like always. Everybody had fun. Later at night it was time o go back home to rest before next training.

Nicole Begg’s Zug SIC/ WIC Report
2008-04-24 03:13 peterdoucet

Second place finisher Nicole Begg treats us to a good description & perspective in her report of last weekend’s Zug World Inline Cup/ Swiss Inline Cup race. She writes ‘…You could not stay in one postion too long otherwise you would soon end up at the back of the pack. Our whole team was constantly on the move jumping on trains and moving up the bunch so we wouldn’t be caught at the back. Even though it’s a long race you don’t want to be caught at the back of the pack. The bad action usually happens at the back of the pack (e.g., crashes), the good action happens at the front (e.g., breakaways)‘.

Men’s Racing In Zug: Top-20
2008-04-24 22:29 peterdoucet

Here is what Bill Begg wrote along with some description of the men’s race in World Cup Topics for 2008 about the top-20 finishers at last weekend’s Zug WIC/ SIC;

1/ Joey Mantia, Lugino Answer - truely is the World superstar, walked the finish & led his new team to a great victory.

2/ Luca Saggioratto, Rollerblade MPC - big Sagg handled all, but the Superstar, no doubt will dothe business for Rollerblade MPC.

3/ 6 times winner max ( Houdini ) Presti, Lugino Answer - well with Joey missing & not all races a bunch sprint, plus no committements for Worlds, who is to say that it will not be MAX number 7 WIC

4/ Andres Munoz, Matter World Inline Center -This guy is very fast & very Strong, but when Isolated from his team, must ensure he is not dragging a chain for a free ride, when his teamates are up the road.

5/ Francesco Zangarini, Rollerblade MPC - the Dancing man, knows how to cover & follow Saggioratto & thats what he is there for.

6/Diego Rosero, Rollerblade MPC - The experienced Diego showed his hand, perhaps he is destined to try & be a breakaway king, this year along with Iten as they have Sagg for the fast stuff.

7/ Claudio Naselli, Lugino Answer - Twoyears ago at the road Euroeans in the road 200 T/T, his last 100 was right on Dugento & ahead of everyone else, he is very fast & being given a good lead out & in the group chain, always a danger.

8/ Yann Guyader, Powerslide Alessi, the young Napolean was in the front at about 400 meters , in fact too far out even for him, I am sure the plan was not to end up swamped by Lugino Answer & Rollerblade MPC.

9/ Harry Vogel, Lugino Answer- Nice comeback to the big time Harry, who had cut short his promising Inline Career, but a nice ride in a strong team had him right up there, a top ten in this company,is almost the equivilent of a World Podium.

10/ Antonio Ruales, BONT IDRD Colombia Positiva - first WIC race a top 10, an excellent result, one of the many young South American Tigers, hunting scalps in the WIC.

11/ Riccardo Bugari, Lugino Answer - Yes all 5 of the team in the top 11, I raced his dad at the 1975 Worlds, dragged him out of the Koen Rucus at European Junior Marathon, great that his mum & dad werepresent to see a dream Debut in the WIC Born in 1991 he was the youngest finisher in the top 50.

12/ Carlos Puerto, BONT IDRD Bogata Positivo, like Teamate Ruales another 17 or 18 year old Tiger, hunting for a top finish.

13/ Matteo Amabili, Powerslide Alessi World - an experienced competitor without the big sprint, is always there abouts in the Mix.

14/ Wayne Begg, World Inline Center Spirotiger - another consistant performance, always found in the top 30, pity teamate Luca Presti, was not around to come off, as he had tried a final 3 km getaway.

15/ Peter Micheal, Matter World Inline Center-left a man short in there committed team run, come to an end short of theline.

16/Kalon Dobbin, Matter World Inline Center - Left facing the breeze far to early, a true World Top rung sprinter 100 meters fromhome should be his windburn territory, not 300 out.

17/= Two Venezuela skaters from BONT Bacata team, Alexander Bastidas & Carlos Salazar, a top 20 in the competion in Zug, would normally relate to a top10 in other times.

19/Ben Alchin, World Inline Center Spirotiger, good to see Ben has recovered from a serious Ankle operation & this tough uncompromising skater back racing.

20/ Kepa Caballero, Powerslide Alessi Euro Team, he is usually always in he top 20 mix, when he competes, butunfortunately neverusually gets the opportunity for a full season‘.

    Zug Team Matter-Inline Center
    2008-04-26 01:25
With Zug being the first WIC race of the year it was also the first time that the Matter-Inline Center team skated together as a team under race conditions, 95% of the race went according to plan but unfortuntly the 5% that did not was the final sprint.

The race in Zug was very fast, with most of the pack on 110mm wheels, it made it very difficult to make a successful breakaway, many skated tried but were not able to stay away from the high speed of the main pack. This could be a trend that will be seen in many of the races this year, the next few races will tell us more.

The biggest mistake our team made in Zug was we hit the front of the sprint to early without all our team, we got separated about 2km from the finish due to a lot of fighting in the pack. Hopefully in the next race we will be able to stay together and see how our sprint as a team shapes up vs the rest.

With a fourth placing from Andres Munoz the race was not a complete write off for our team but we have a lot of practice to do before the next races for the final sprint, the team is feeling good about the up coming races.

    Until the next race

    2008-04-26 04:47 peterdoucet

Andrew Love had an interesting exchange with Eddy “the cannibal”- see Note to Eddy- and also the comments from $30 + free beer.

Here are my Friday night home-work questions for you; Can/ do elite & non-elite athletes…

    • …co-exist in a mutually beneficial environment?
    • …get along?
    • …have similar needs? Or are their needs different?
    • …have complimentary strengths?
    • …exist without each other?
    • …have a sub-culture?

I think elite & non-elite athletes have different training needs & performance goals. Elite athletes require intensive support and as a result, they tend to spend a lot of time with each other seeking & receiving support.

Because elite athletes spend a lot of time together- in training camps, as room-mates, traveling to many competitions & training across the world, in regular training sessions, as team-mates & as rivals, and suffering through heavy sacrifice and celebrating in wonderful joys- a unique culture of excellence and performance develops.

Elite athletes tend to carry a part of that culture with them and within them. While they are participating or immersed in a culture of excellence and performance, some elite athletes maintain a connection with their home or non-elite club/ team.

Where or how elite athletes connect with non-elite club/ teams & the general public is the place where a sense of elitism will surface. Sometimes the perception of elitism is accurate, sometimes it is not.

I just painted a very simplified version of what I think is a very complex dynamic. What makes this dynamic ever more multi-faceted and complicated and difficult to pin-down is that it is dependent on regional factors and on the sport & the discipline that is practiced. Most importantly, it is dependent on an individual or smaller group within a myriad of group setttings.

Here is what Bill Begg wrote along with some description of the men’s race in World Cup Topics for 2008 about the top-20 finishers at last weekend’s Zug WIC/ SIC;

    Neo-Beatniks & Elitist Bones
