Nick Says Hi
2008-03-22 20:48 peterdoucet

Montreal’s Nick Zacchia is currently studying in Melbourne, Australia. Nick, who sometimes goes by the name ’Yellow Dart’, called me the other day and asked me to say hello to all the skaters. He reports that he hasn’t been skating much but he is looking for a group to skate with in Melbourne.

About his initial thoughts on his Australian adventure, Nick said ‘What I think a lot of people don’t realize is that one’s life comprises mainly of memories. The present is just a fleeting moment of our lives and the future is intangible and nebulous. What is real, what can be grasped are the memories we make. Memories of places we’ve been, great people we’ve known and incredible things we’ve done‘.

About a hot dog eating contest that he was involved in, he wrote ‘It dawned on me early that chewing the hotdog bun with my molars was inefficient because of the consistency of the bread. It was malleable and did not shred easily. I decided to do all my chewing with my incisors. I frantically bit off tiny bites of the front end of the hotdog, not unlike a cartoon character might hungrily devour an ear of corn. Once I had bitten off enough chunks to fill my mouth I simply swallowed, sometimes taking a swig of beer to help wash it all down. It seemed to be working. While others endlessly chewed the unchewable buns, I was pulling into the lead‘.

France’s 3 Pistes Day- Rain On Day 1
2008-03-22 21:12 peterdoucet

The Trophée Des 3 Pistes is taking place this weekend in France. About 1000 skaters are taking part in this three day track racing event. Racers compete on three different tracks over the span of three days. You’ll be able to find result here and photos here.

According to what’s being written in the thread 3 Pistes, there has been plenty of rain. Nevertheless, some racing has taken place and Mundo Patin has posted some photos.

Roller En Ligne reports that the only races to take place before day 1 racing was halted was the ‘Poussines’ category.

2008 World Skaters- Realities
2008-03-22 22:35 peterdoucet

The thread 2008 World Skaters helps paint a picture of the reality & challenges that some roller speed skaters and their respective governing bodies face.

About skating in the UK, Racing Snake 71 writes ‘The sport in the UK gets absolutely no funding from the government and has to be self funding through it’s membership. Despite this we regularly attend worlds and european championships only missing one or two since their inauguration in the mid 1930’s. (Although our Junior attendance is not so favourable)‘.

About skating in New Zealand,  williambegg says ‘It works like this about 90% of all funding goes to 7 Major N.Z. Olympic sports, the other 10% or whatever of the $45,000,000 is called contestable funding & its on sports meetting requirements at World level, After a big performance in Korea, 7 top 8 finishers got $15,000 N.Z. each minus 20 % tax = $13,000, then the speed got something like another $110,000 for Worlds campaign, but SPARC the N.Z. governments sports agency, does not fund Juniors, they unfortunately get none of the money‘.

I can attest that from the government, skating in Canada gets the opposite of how much snow the country received this year- that is to say, zilch.

Cat Vs Cat
2008-03-23 03:33 peterdoucet

I share my living space with two cats; one is an old white female and the other is a young orange male. When my cats first started living together, I spent a lot of time enforcing peaceful relations between my cats. Now, they do not dare not fight with each other, when I am at home and awake that is.

While I am away or sleeping, it’s a whole other story. My cats spend some of their precious time fighting with each other.

How do I know this?

Clumps of hair, displaced rugs, knocked-over food trays, and toppled house plants.

The other day, I set my camera down on the floor, pressed record, and left for work. 8 1/2 hours later, I came home and stopped the camera. The following video- 2008-03-18 Mississauga Cat Day- is a compilation of the 3+ minutes of action that takes place during the day.

Fatty’s Respect for the Bonk
2008-03-23 07:33 peterdoucet

I think that Fat Cyclist’s entry Respect for the Bonk is quite applicable to roller speed skating- and perhaps to ice as well.

I’ll never forget bonking… at the New York 100k. And at A2A. And again at the next 100k & A2A I tried to race in.

Not fun at all. And not cool either.

No, not fun or cool.

And even though I remember the utter misery and hell I experienced when bonking, I wonder why I keep going back to the races in which I suffered and experienced things that I will never be able to explain or communicate to anyone.

Now that enough time has passed and I’ve recovered, I can look back and laugh about the times I’ve bonked.

On bonking, Fatty writes ‘Now, I don’t know if anyone who doesn’t do endurance sports really knows what a true bonk feels like. It’s actually kind of interesting. First of all, you have only the slightest amount of power… Next, you stop caring. You know that you must look ridiculous, riding your bike at three miles per hour (yes, really), but you just don’t have the energy to care about appearances. You completely lack the ability to rally — it doesn’t matter how bracing a pep talk your friends give you, you aren’t going to be able to buck up and go faster. In a really good bonk, I’ve experienced a disconnectedness between my mind and body: this can’t be my body inching along, right? Surely, if this were my body, I’d be able to tell my legs to go faster. Sometimes — not always — I’ll feel cold.

All of these sensations, though, are pretty much secondary to the main emotion: misery. It’s a self-pitying, helpless, weak, beyond-tiredness, beyond-hunger, beyond-thirsty, miserable misery.

And the thing is, as far as bonks go, the one I had last Saturday was pretty minor. I had, after all, a mobile phone; I could quit any moment and call for help. And I knew I wasn’t far from home; Once I got to the top of the hill, I knew I’d be fine.

A bonk underscored by lack of options, though, is something special. It’s something to behold if you’re with the guy who’s bonking, and something you never forget if you’re the guy who bonked…

Bonk Recovery
If there’s a silver lining to the bonk, it’s the feeling of recovering from a bonk. Eating everything in sight, as if it were a contest, as if you have a capacity for an infinite amount of food, as if every kind of food really does go with every other kind of food (ketchup and whipped cream on rye? Excellent!)

And then laying down, knowing that you really are as tired as you can possibly be. And that you survived a bonk‘.
