Dozens of pro-Catalan independence demonstrators gathered in London's Piccadilly Circus, Saturday, to voice their support to the Catalan separatist movement, one day after the Catalan regional parliament declared independence from Spain.
The demonstrators also protested over the imprisonment of the two Catalan civil society leaders, Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, who are detained by the Spanish government on possible grounds of sedition.
Organised by the Catalonian National Assembly in England, the protest referred to Catalonia as a «new country.»
«The purpose of the demonstration is making aware all the English and British citizens in London that Catalonia is a new country and that we believe it should be recognized, because we believe in freedoms,» organiser Luis Diaz-Guerra told the rally, adding, «We're building a country for all and this is magical and at the same time amazing. It is a blank book and we're writing it and should be proud of it.»
The vote in favour of independence was held hours before the Spanish Senate voted in favour of invoking Article 155. The measure was triggered by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Saturday October 28, allowing Madrid to establish de facto rule over Catalonia.

Germany: PEGIDA marks third birthday with rally in Dresden

Around 2,000 supporters on the anti-Islam, anti-immigration PEGIDA organisation gathered in Theaterplatz, Dresden on Saturday for the group's third birthday.
They carried German flags, as well as those of groups such as the far-right Identitarian Movement, while also showing protest signs against refugees, Islam and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Meanwhile, a group of antifa protesters gathered opposite the square, to demonstrate against PEGIDA. They shouted down the speakers at the PEGIDA demonstration and held up banners with slogans such as, «Diversity instead of Monotony» and «No person is illegal.»
The police kept the two opposing demonstrations apart and there were no arrests or incidents.
Kenya: Police fire tear gas in clashes with protesters over election

Riot police fired tear gas against opposition supporters in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Saturday as the ongoing unrest surrounding the re-run of the country’s presidential election continued.
Protesters retaliated by throwing rocks and other projectiles in Nairobi's Kawangware neighbourhood.
Thursday’s election was postponed 'until further notice' in four out of 47 counties following clashes between opposition supporters and police. At least six people have been killed and more than 30 injured in the ensuing violence.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga is boycotting the elections, saying they will not be free and fair. He also withdrew from Kenya's upcoming vote after claiming that the electoral commission had not taken measures necessary to ensure a fair election for the second round.
After initially calling for protests during polling day, Odinga has since encouraged voters to stay at home and boycott the vote.
The original election in August was nullified by the Supreme Court following protests and a legal challenge over alleged vote-rigging in favour of current president Uhuru Kenyatta.

A brail ‘graffiti gallery’ dedicated to visually impaired stars including musician Ray Charles, athlete Marle Runyan and programmer Mikhail Pozhidaev, was unveiled in Yekaterinburg on Saturday.
Visitors could walk along the wall and run their fingers along the braille code to read the dedications to renowned individuals.
An artist and author behind the initiative Andrei Kolokolov explained that the graffiti gallery serves to create artwork “that can be read only in cooperation with blind people.”
Kolokolov added, “if we look at this picture now, we can see a picture only. If blind people come closer and touch it, they will read text only. When we are talking and hang out altogether they can tell us what the text is about and we can describe what picture we see. So it seemed to be a really good idea that could unite people.»

Leader of Iceland's Left-Green Movement Katrin Jakobsdottir addressed members of her party in Reykjavik on Sunday, as they awaited the final results of the election.
The party leader spoke of the possibility of forming a coalition with the Social Democratic Alliance and the anti-establishment Pirate party. «I hope that when all the votes have been counted we will have a seat in the next government and that we will lead that government and we will make this community better for the nation», she said.
«We put forward a clear vision that we wanted to be a force that could ensure added equality, added justice, a greener community and a community for the future, where we really focus on how we can make Iceland better», Jakobsdottir continued.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that his country will «not hesitate» in using military action to defend Iranian missile production against interference from the US at a session of the Islamic Consultative Assembly in Tehran, Sunday.
“For defending our nation, any weapons of any kind that we need, we will not hesitate in using them,” Rouhani stated.
President Rouhani stated, «We have built missiles, are building missiles and will build missiles, and this violates no international laws, and it is not in conflict with resolution 2231,» drawing anti-US chants in reaction from the Parliament.
Rouhani continued that the US withdrawal from the Iranian-US JCPOA nuclear deal was, «explicitly violating previous agreements and neglecting a UN security council-approved agreement.»
US President Donald Trump made the decision to renege on the JCPOA deal with Iran on October 13, which was agreed under the Obama administration in 2015. The deal has now been referred to congress for further deliberation.

President of the People's Party of Catalonia (Partido Popular de Catalunya), Xavier Garcia Albiol, stated that, «Today is a very important day. Today we're in the post-process phase. There is a reality of those Catalans' feelings and also Spaniards have to be aware of them.»

Morocco: Protesters face off with police on anniversary of fisherman’s death

A number of people were arrested after protesters took to the streets of Al-Hoceima in Morocco on Saturday marking the one year anniversary of the death of fisherman Mohsen Fikri.
The restive city of Al-Hoceima has been rocked by protests by local youth demanding jobs and an end of perceived government corruption.
The demonstrations first erupted one year ago following the death of Fikri who was crushed to death in a garbage truck while protesting attempts by police to confiscate his fish.
Police staged running battles trying to stop the protests taking place following a ‘call out’ on social media.
Later, protesters gathered with memorial banners in the streets to honour fisherman Fikri.
The death of Fikri sparked protests across the country and led to the dismissal of four cabinet ministers.
