I was glad to hear this (я был рад это слышать), as it showed that Aunt Agatha was beginning to come round a bit (так как это показывало, что тетя Агата начинала понемногу оттаивать; to come round — успокаиваться, приходить в благожелательное расположение духа). I was glad to hear this, as it showed that Aunt Agatha was beginning to come round a bit. There had been some unpleasantness a year before, when she had sent me over to New York to disentangle my Cousin Gussie from the clutches of a girl on the music-hall stage. When I tell you that by the time I had finished my operations, Gussie had not only married the girl but had gone on the stage himself, and was doing well, you'll understand that Aunt Agatha was upset to no small extent.

So I braced on hearing these kind words and smiled genially on the assemblage.

"Rather (да)? Oh, rather (а, да)! Absolutely (непременно)!"

"Your aunt said that you would do anything that was in your power to be of assistance to us." "Rather? Oh, rather! Absolutely!"

"Thank you so much. I want you to put dear Motty up for a little while."

I didn't get this for a moment (до меня не сразу дошло; to get — зд.: понять, осознать; for a moment — на минуту).

"Put him up (рекомендовал)? For my clubs (в мои клубы)?"

"No, nо (нет, нет)! Darling Motty is essentially a home bird (мой Мотти в сущности домосед; home bird — домосед: «домашняя птица»). Aren't you, Motty darling (не правда ли, Мотти, дорогой)?"

Motty, who was sucking the knob of his stick, uncorked himself (Мотти, который присосался к набалдашнику своей трости, отклеился от нее; cork — пробка; to cork — затыкать пробкой; закупоривать; to uncork — откупоривать).

"Yes, mother," he said, and corked himself up again (да, мама, — сказал он и опять приклеился к ней).

"I should not like him to belong to clubs (я бы не хотела, чтобы он посещал клубы; to belong — принадлежать; быть членом). I mean put him up here (я имею в виду, чтобы вы приютили его здесь). Have him to live with you while I am away (чтобы он пожил у вас, пока меня не будет)."

I didn't get this for a moment. "Put him up? For my clubs?"

"No, no! Darling Motty is essentially a home bird. Aren't you, Motty darling?"

Motty, who was sucking the knob of his stick, uncorked himself.

"Yes, mother," he said, and corked himself up again. "I should not like him to belong to clubs. I mean put him up here. Have him to live with you while I am away."

These frightful words trickled out of her like honey (эти ужасные слова стекли с ее /губ/ как мед; to trickle — течь тонкой струйкой, сочиться). The woman simply didn't seem to understand the ghastly nature of her proposal (похоже, эта женщина просто не понимала всю ужасную суть своего предложения). I gave Motty the swift east-to-west (я окинул Мотти взглядом: «я дал Мотти быстроту с востока на запад»). Не was sitting with his mouth nuzzling the stick, blinking at the wall (он сидел, грызя набалдашник трости, уставившись в стену: «прижавшись ртом к трости, моргая на стену»; to nuzzle — тыкаться носом; прижиматься). The thought of having this planted on me for an indefinite period appalled me (мысль о том, чтобы мне навязали это на неопределенный период, привела меня в ужас; to plant — сажать; насаждать; размещать, располагать; to appal — ужасать; потрясать; приводить в смятение). Absolutely appalled me, don't you know (просто ужаснула, вы понимаете).

No doubt you read my book, India and the Indians (вы, несомненно, читали мою книгу «Индия и индийцы»)? I felt certain that he would have been able to think of some way of putting a stop to this woman (я был уверен, что он смог бы придумать какой-нибудь способ остановить эту женщину; to feel — чувство-вать; полагать, считать; to put — класть, ставить; приводить в определенное состояние или положение; stop — остановка, задержка).

From where I sat I could see Jeeves in the dining-room, laying the breakfast-table. I wished I could have had a minute with him alone. I felt certain that he would have been able to think of some way of putting a stop to this woman.
