utf8 в Slackware 10: locale not supported by Xlib

Доброго времени суток.
Никак не удается подружить Slackware 10 с utf8. В консоли вроде добился отображения
символов в обычных программах, но mc не выводит псевдографику, сдвигает символы,
man выводит непонятную мешанину. Что же касается иксов, то при попытке запустить
с локалью ru_RU.utf8 icewm выводит:

И завершает работу с segmentation fault. Window Maker, в свою очередь, тоже не
запускается, сообщая:

wmaker fatal error: похоже, что активен другой диспетчер окон
KDE грузится нормально, но вместо кириллицы выводит квадратики. Самое интересное
с gnome и xfce4 - они грузятся (хотя в гноме не работает nautilus), но вместо
кириллических сисволов выводят квадратики с четырьмя цифрами. При этом gnome
сообщает такое:

Все сообщения получены при запуске менеджеров окон прямо в иксах из rxvt.
Можно ли как-нибудь решить этот вопрос? Что за поддержка локали Xlib-ом и как
ее включить?
