War child to world player of the year: the past of Luka Modric in images

Croatia and Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric has come a long way since his humble beginnings, having fled from the horrors of war aged six, to being crowned world champion of football and proud owner of the prestigious Ballon d’Or. Footage captured on Monday traces back through the past haunts of Modric’s life, starting with the small hamlet of Modrici, in the Velebit Mountains, where he spent his younger years.
The remains of his old family home stand solitary on a mountain road, surrounded by empty fields, and a sign warning of potential mines left over from Croatia's independence war.
Luka’s family fled the abode after Serb forces attacked his village in 1991 and shot his grandfather. The family sought refuge in the nearby town of Zadar, staying for a time at the Hotel Iz.
During his time there, Modric started to play for NK Zadar's youth team before moving to Dinamo Zegreb several years later.
«He is a natural born talent. He was playing with older players too, not just with us who were his age. He had no other interests but football. And he was really good. Even then», recalls Luka's childhood friend and old teammate Danilo Paunovic.
In 2008, Modric played for Tottenham Hotspur. He then transferred to Real Madrid in 2012, and went on to win the hearts of football fans world-wide with his performance in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Modric championed the Ballon d’Or during a ceremony in Paris on Monday, taking the lead from historic favourites Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Modric also won the name for Best FIFA Footballer of the Year in September.

Reigning champions Real Madrid held a training session and press conference at their training centre in the Spanish capital on Tuesday, on the eve of their Champions League match against CSKA Moscow.
«We are writing a book at the moment, so we want to win all possible matches, that's the case with tomorrow, and then win the Champions League, it's a competition that we love,» Real coach Santiago Solari explained.
This will be the last game in Group G with Real having already qualified at the top, although if they lose and Rome defeat Viktoria Plzen by a six goal margin, they will go through in second.
CSKA Moscow have already been eliminated but can still qualify for Europa League if they manage to grab a point and Plzen lose.

Former England footballer Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne pleaded not guilty to sexual assault when he appeared in Peterlee Magistrates' Court near Newcastle on Tuesday.
Gascoigne stands accused of intentionally touching a woman aged over 16 without consent when he was travelling on a train between York and Newcastle on August 20.
He is alleged to have kissed the woman but the former Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham player claimed he had intervened to comfort her after she had been called a 'fat cow.'
Gascoigne was granted unconditional bail ahead of his appearance before Teesside Crown Court in Middlesborough on January 8.
The ex-Lazio midfielder made 57 appearances for England and is widely considered one of the most talented players of his generation.
Gascoigne has had well-documented struggles with alcohol abuse, poor mental health and erratic behaviour in the past.
