China: French and Chinese FMs exchange differences over N. Korean nuclear response

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian publicly disagreed with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi over the North Korean nuclear issue, in Beijing on Friday.
There was a tense exchange between the two foreign ministers at a joint press conference in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
Le Drian, who is on a four-day visit to Beijing, said that the Chinese should «push» the North Koreans into renouncing nuclear weapons.
Wang countered that the Chinese have already proposed a ‘dual suspension’ plan, whereby Pyongnang would discontinue its nuclear programme and Washington would stop carrying out military exercises in the region.
«If the conditions are not met, we have to create the proper conditions. Of course, if France has a better plan, we would like to hear it,» Wang Yi said.
The US government has rejected what Wang called a “realistic and doable” solution to the North Korean crisis.

Cuban President Raul Castro met with visiting Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, in Havana on Friday.
Castro received Ri at the presidential palace where they talked about the historic ties of friendship between both nations, as well as other international issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Ri delivered a verbal message to Castro from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as well as his condolences for the first anniversary of the death of former President Fidel Castro, which will be commemorated on Saturday.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and the DPRK ambassador to the island were also in attendance.
Last Wednesday, Rodriguez met with Ri at the foreign ministry headquarters in the Cuban capital where they vowed to strengthen ties amid political tensions with Washington and “imperial threats” that aggravate the situation on the Korean peninsula.
Ri’s visit comes during a period that both Cuba and the DPRK are facing political tensions with the US.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk suggested that Russia carried out “hostile activities such as cyberattacks or fake news” during the UK referendum, when speaking from the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels on Friday.
Tusk warned the EU member states, as well as the US to be, “cautious, vigilant and honest, if we want to protect ourselves.”
Earlier this month, UK Prime Minister Theresa May also accused Russia of «weaponising information» and “meddling in elections”, during a speech in London.

International aid arrived in Sana'a, Yemen, after a three-week-long Saudi-led blockade cut off UN aid workers, UNICEF volunteers and the Red Cross from the crisis-hit country, Saturday.
The blockade followed an intercepted missile attack on Riyadh, which Yemen's Houthi movement claimed responsibility for.
«Sana'a International Airport received two UNICEF flights carrying polio vaccines and another Red Cross flight with 8 Red Cross staff,» the capital city's airport director Khalid Al-Shayef explained.
Over 7 million people in Yemen are struggling to cope with famine and disease which is ravaging civilian populations reliant on aid from international organisations.
Most recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning that cases of Diphtheria in the war-torn country are on the rise.

Colombia: Santos and FARC leader mark anniversary as peace deal trembles

Colombia celebrated its first anniversary of the peace deal signed between President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), at Colon Theatre in Bogota on Friday.
Santos and FARC leader Rodrigo Londono, also known as 'Timochenko', accused one another of having failed to fulfil the established conditions of the deal.
Santos was heavy critical of the fact the FARC is now a political party. “Welcome to democracy. They are doing politics», Santos said. Londono retorted that Congress is boycotting the peace pact through their slow rate at implementing laws or changing them. “The Congress seems obstinate in destroying the legislative acts which were approved for the deal”, he stated.
A pro-peace demonstration gathered on Bolivar Square immediately after the meeting. Protesters displayed a banner reading «Without forgetting» and «Let's defend peace for the victims», as they urged Santos to honour the agreement.
The peace deal, signed one year ago, was intended to decrease violence across the nation as well as to increase in tourism. The FARC has since respected the ceasefire, but has transformed into a political party under the same initials (FARC). The political group has however adopted a new full title, 'Common Alternative Revolutionary Force', which will run in the 2018 Colombian elections.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed her fellow party members at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party conference in Kuhlungsborn, Saturday, pledging to put a new government in place as quickly as possible following the collapse of the 'Jamaica' coalition talks.
«Europe needs a strong Germany. And of course, it is desirable to create a new government as soon as possible, not just ruling board,» stated Merkel.
She announced the negotiation talks with the leaders of Social-Democratic Part Martin Schulz and Chairman of Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) Horst Seehofer as well as Minister-President Frank-Walter Steinmeier next week.
Merkel commented on a possible coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD), saying she was «prepared» to have these talks, but warned that they «can be based only on a mutual respect.»
According to the Chancellor, the CDU-CSU 'Grand Coalition' had achieved a lot over the years and underlined that the «last government, which is still in state office, has done more for local authorities than any previous government.»
She negatively responded to the prospect of snap elections, saying that «it does not mean that if we cannot start with the result that we have, we should request people to vote again.»

Tensions flared as the crowds clashed both inside and outside the Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport as Correa returned to the country for the first time since stepping down in April after a decade in power.
Police were forced to disperse the crowds using teargas.
Ecuador has been thrown into political crisis as a legal battle to remove President Lenin Moreno from office and replace him with Foreign Minister Ricard Patino failed, with the Electoral Court to decide on the fate of the leadership.
Correa, who has been living in wife's home country of Belgium since July, frequently lambasts his successor for shifting the government to the right and 'betraying' the PAIS Alliance's leftist principles.

Supporters and opponents of Correa and his Citizens’ Revolution clashed inside the international arrivals hall.
Footage shows another former President, Abdala Bucaram with a bloody nose.
Police fired tear gas inside the building to disperse the crowd.
Correa has lived in Belgium, his wife's country of birth, since completing his third term.
According to local reports, he disembarked from the plane at a private gate and was greeted by a select group of supporters.
Correa has returned to Ecuador to direct a campaign against his designated successor President Lenín Moreno who he accuses of betraying the Citizens’ Revolution by implementing a right-wing government programme.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday in Ankara that US President Donald Trump had promised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to stop arming the People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria during a phone conversation.
«Mr. Trump clearly stated that he had given clear instructions and that the YPG won't be given arms and that this nonsense should have ended a long time ago,» said Cavusoglu.
The arming of Kurdish fighters in Syria by the US has been a source of tension between Washington and Ankara.
Whilst Washington has viewed the YPG as a key component in the battle against Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS, ISIL) in the region, Ankara sees the group as terrorists of the same vain as the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK).
France: Protest against slavery held outside Libyan embassy

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Libyan Embassy in Paris, Friday, after footage emerged earlier this month of Africans being sold at slave auctions in Libya.
Protesters held placards denouncing the response of the Libyan government and demanded that world leaders tackle modern-day slavery. The rally was organised by several French human rights organisations.
After widespread outrage, the Libyan Government of National Accord has now opened an investigation into the slave auctions. People smugglers take advantage of migrants from Africa en route to Europe.

Основной темой митинга стал протест местных жителей против строительства Томинского горно-обогатительного комбината. Петицию против этого предприятия подписали почти 250 тысяч человек.
