Доброго времени суток!

 

Читаем “Atlas Shrugged” – «Атлант расправил плечи»

 

Несмотря на более чем солидный объем, в романе всего несколько главных героев. Для изучения английского это несущественно, но для понимания происходящего в романе может быть важно. С некоторыми мы уже познакомились:

 

         Dagny Taggart – Vice-President in Charge of Operation of Taggart Transcontinental, железнодорожной корпорации. Дэгни – наследница рода Таггартов, корпорацию Taggart Transcontinental основал ее далекий предок Натаниель.

         Francisco D`Anconia – «медный король», один из богатейших людей планеты (богатейший?), наследник рода д`Анкония (бизнес по добыче меди основал далекий предок Франциско, Себастьян) и друг детства Дэгни Таггарт.

 

Еще двое пока не упоминались нами – это Hank Rearden и John Galt. До Хэнка мы скоро доберемся, а что касается Джона Галта, то он впервые выходит на передний план только в третьей части романа. Когда мы туда дойдем – Бог ведает… До тех пор его лишь регулярно поминают (всуе), задавая друг другу риторический вопрос “Who is John Galt?”

 

Сегодня у нас на повестке дня довольно длинный и напряженный диалог Dagny с ее братцем Джеймсом, который является президентом Taggart Transcontinental, а значит и ее прямым начальником. Dagny только что проинспектировала состояние Rio Norte Line, транспортной ветки в штате Колорадо, на которую она возлагает большие надежды…

 

“The Rio Norte Live is a pile of junk from one end to the other,” she said. “It’s much worse than I thought. But we’re going to save it.”

“Of course,” said James Taggart.

“Some of the rail can be salvaged. Not much and not for long. We’ll start laying new rail in the mountain sections, Colorado first. We’ll get the new rail in two month.”

 “Oh, did Orren Boyle say he’ll –“

“I’ve ordered the rail from Rearden Steel.”

James Taggart did not answer at once. “Dagny, why don’t you sit in the chair as one is supposed to?” he said at last; his voice was petulant. “Nobody holds business conferences this way.”

“I do.”

She waited. He asked, his eyes avoiding her, “Did you say that you have ordered the rail from Rearden?”

“Yesterday evening. I phoned him from Cleveland.”

“But the Board hasn’t authorized it. I haven’t authorized it. You haven’t consulted me.”

She reached over, picked up the receiver of a telephone on his desk and handed it to him.

“Call Rearden and cancel it,” she said.

//…// “I haven’t said that,” he answered angrily. “I haven’t said that at all.”

“Then it stands?”

“I haven’t said that, either. //…// the Board hasn’t – “

“The Board hasn’t anything to do with it. They authorized you to buy the rail thirteen month ago. Where you buy it is up to you.”

“I don’t think it’s proper to make such a decision without giving the Board a chance to express an opinion. And I don’t see why I should be made to take the responsibility.”

”I am taking it.”

“What about the expenditure which – “

“Rearden is charging less than Orren Boyle’s Associated Steel.”

“Yes, and what about Orren Boyle?”

“I’ve cancelled the contract. We had the right to cancel it six months ago.”

“When did you do that?”

“Yesterday.”

“But he hasn’t called to have me confirm it.”

“He won’t.”

 

Taggart sat looking down at his desk. She wondered why he resented the necessity of dealing with Rearden, and why his resentment had such an odd, evasive quality. Rearden Steel had been the chief supplier of Taggart Transcontinental for ten years, ever since the first Rearden furnace was fired, in the days when their father was president of the railroad. For ten years, most of their rail had come from Rearden Steel. There were not many firms in the country who delivered what was ordered, when and as ordered. Rearden Steel was one of them. If she were insane, thought Dagny, she would conclude that her brother hated to deal with Rearden because Rearden did his job with superlative efficiency; but she would not conclude it, because she thought that such a feeling was not within the humanly possible.

 

“It isn’t fair,” said James Taggart.

“What isn’t?”

“That we give all our business to Rearden. It seems to me we should give somebody else a chance, too. Rearden doesn’t need; he’s plenty big enough. We ought to help the smaller fellows to develop. Otherwise, we’re just encouraging a monopoly.”

“Don’t talk tripe, Jim.”

“Why do we always have to get things from Rearden?”

“Because we always get them.”

“I don’t like Henry Rearden.”

“I do. But what does that matter, one way or the other? We need rails and he’s the only one who can give them to us.”

“The human element is very important. You have no sense of the human element at all.”

“We’re talking about saving a railroad, Jim.”

“Yes, of course, of course, but still, you haven’t any sense of the human element.”

“No. I haven’t.”

“If we give Rearden such a large order for steel rail – “

“They’re not going to be steel. They’re Rearden Metal.”

 

Salvage – спасать имущество (например, при кораблекрушении или пожаре); спасать что-то, находящееся под угрозой; пускать в переработку, во вторсырье;

to remove something from a place so that it will not be damaged, destroyed

to save (something valuable or important): to prevent the loss of (something)

He is trying to salvage his marriage/reputation – Он пытается спасти свой брак/свою репутацию. Few of their possessions were salvaged from the fire – Мало что из их имущества удалось спасти из огня.

 

Petulant – обиженный, раздраженный/раздражительный;

having or showing the attitude of people who become angry and annoyed when they do not get what they want

Her tone was petulant and angry – Ее тон был раздраженным и сердитым. “Why don’t you sit in the chair as one is supposed to?” he said at last; his voice was petulant - (из текста) «Почему бы тебе не сесть на стул как положено», сказал он наконец. Его голос был раздражен (его голос выдавал раздражение).

 

Resent – негодовать, возмущаться, обижаться;

 to be angry or upset about (someone or something that you think is unfair)

I resent that remark – Я возмущен этим замечанием. She resents having to wait – Она возмущается, когда ей приходится ждать. He resented his boss for making him work late – Он негодовал на своего начальника за то, что тот заставил его работать допоздна.

 

Furnace – печь, горн, топка, а в нашем контексте – домна.

an enclosed container in which heat is produced: such as a : one for melting metals

… ever since the first Rearden furnace was fired – …с тех самых пор, как заработала первая домна (печь) Реардена.

 

Insane – сумасшедший, безумный, безрассудный; соответственно, sane – в здравом уме/рассудке, «нормальный»

having or showing severe mental illness

It was insane of him to risk everything he had – Он поступил безрассудно, рискнув всем, что имел. I don’t think any sane person would take his threats seriously – Я не думаю, что хоть один здравомыслящий человек может воспринимать его угрозы всерьез.

В современном мире, отравленном политкорректностью, слово insane применяется редко и является, как бы это сказать, не вполне нейтральным. Назвать сумасшедшего «сумасшедшим», «психом», считается чуть ли не преступлением, и уж точно очень дурным тоном. В ходу нейтральное «душевнобольной» - mentally ill. “Insane”, если верить Merriam-Webster, используется в основном в юридическом контексте: criminally insane – невменяемый (в отношении совершенного преступления).

 

Efficiency – эффективность, результативность, действенность;

the ability to do something or produce something without wasting materials, time, or energy

 The company is trying to lower costs and improve efficiencies – Компания пытается снизить затраты и улучшить эффективность.

 

It isn’t fair – это нечестно! Очень часто встречается в разговорной речи.

 

Human element – человеческий фактор.
