PHD IN SYMBOLIC COMPUTATION AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Symbolic Computation Group at North Carolina State University
(NCSU), Raleigh, NC, is seeking applications from prospective Ph.D.
students for graduate studies in symbolic computation starting in Fall
2011.

Symbolic computation is a field at the intersection of mathematics and
computer science concerned with the design, analysis and
implementation of algorithms for algebraic problems. The Symbolic
Computation Group at NCSU consists of 7 faculty members, 3 postdocs
and 17 Ph.D. students, with research areas including:

* Computational real algebraic geometry
* Hybrid symbolic-numeric computation
* Symbolic linear algebra
* Symbolic analysis
* Symbolic model discovery
* Algebraic complexity theory
* Computational invariant theory
* Symmetric spaces and their representation
* Algebraic statistics
* Algebraic combinatorics
* Polynomial system solving
* Algebraic theory of differential and difference equations

The Symbolic Computation Group at NCSU is integrated in the Department
of Mathematics, which won the 2010 Award for an Exemplary Program or
Achievement in a Mathematics Department of the American Mathematical
Society. The Department has nearly 65 faculty members representing
all areas of mathematics. Our group also has close ties with the
Department of Computer Science at NCSU.

Please consult our website at
http://www.math.ncsu.edu/Symbolic_Computation
for more information on our group, and see also the attached brochure.

Prospective students interested in PhD studies in symbolic computation
at NCSU should apply for graduate admission at the Department of
Mathematics at NCSU. Please consult the Department's webpage for
prospective graduate students at
http://www.math.ncsu.edu/grad/prospective.php
which includes links to Admission Requirements and Procedures for US
and International students, and information on Financial Assistance.

Prospective students interested in the research area of some of the
faculty members of the Symbolic Computation Group should also send an
email to that member, indicating their research interest and
experience (with a resume), and their intension to apply to the
graduate program at the Department of Mathematics at NCSU. Students
with strong background in algebra and/or theoretical computer science
will receive special consideration for acceptance. Experience in
research in symbolic computation is also an advantage, but not a
requirement.

All Ph.D. students accepted in our program receive Teaching or
Research Assistantships, which includes stipend and full tuition. For
most favorable consideration for the fall term, all application
materials should be received by February 1, 2011, but later
applications are also considered.
