Now Washington is the residence of the President and Congress. The center of the city is on Capital Hill. The Capital Building houses both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Greenwich Village and the East Village in New York
Greenwich Village and the East Village have always been at the center of New york's excitement. Both have been places for people with different and creative ideas. Both have an active nightlife with plenty of bars, restaraurants and clubs. In the early 1900s the charm of Greenwich Village attracted bohemians - writers and artists. By the 1920s, the streets of the Village were filled with other peole, curious to see how these odd Villagers lived.

Native Americans
Native Americans came from Asia. Over 20, 000 years ago, they traveled across the land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. When English colonists came to the New World on board the "Mayflower," the Native Americans met them and were very friendly and helped them a lot. In those days, people lived in small earth houses and grew their own food. Some Indians ate only grass, nuts, and what fruit they could find. Other people were fishermen and lived in wooden houses. Most Native Americans were very peaceful. They wanted to live happily with nature and each other. They believed in many gods and thought that the gods lived in trees, stones, water and fire.

The history of Manhattan
The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle Manhattan. To protect themselves from attacks, they built a sturdy wooden wall. Although the original wall is now long gone, this wall gave its name to a street in Lower Manhattan and the street, in turn, became synonymous with American business. The street, of course, is Wall Street.
The New York Stock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange are both in the Wall Street area. So are many stock brokers, banks and investment firms, in addition to the headquarters of many large domestic and international corporations.

Texas
A giant among states, vast Texas was once a sovereign nation. During 300 years of rule by Spain, it had sprawled like a sleeping giant, its riches undeveloped and its colonization limited to a few missions, supported by presidios (military posts). When Mexico became an independent country in 1821, Texas became a Mexican state and new settlers from the United States were welcomed. The large influx of Anglo-American colonists and African American slaves led to skirmishes with Mexican troops. After a successful war of independence against Mexico, the Texans raised the Lone Star flag over their own republic in 1836. This government was officially recognized by the United States and by several European countries. Then in 1845 Texas accepted annexation by the United States and was admitted to the Union as the 28th state.
