Christmas Vocabulary

advent    the arrival (приход, прибытие) of someone or something important
Advent    the coming (or second coming) of Jesus Christ; t

Bethlehem   the small town in the Middle East believed to be the birthplace (место рождения) of Jesus Christ
candle (свеча)    a cylinder (цилиндр) of wax (воск) with a central wick (фитиль) which burns to produce light

chimney a vertical pipe (вертикальная труба) in a house that allows smoke and gases to escape (выходить) from a fireplace (камин) (Father Christmas traditionally enters a house through its chimney)

Christian     a person who believes in Christianity (христианство)
Christmas   the annual Christian festival (праздник) celebrating (отмечать, праздновать) the birth of Jesus Christ (Christmas Day is on 25 December)

Christmas cake   a rich fruit cake (фруктовый пирог) covered with white icing (глазурь), eaten at Christmas
Christmas card   a greetings card (поздравительная открытка) that people send to friends and family at Christmas
Christmas carol a religious song or popular hymn (гимн) that people sing at Christmas (рождественское песнопение)
Christmas Day 25 December, the birthday of Jesus Christ

Christmas Eve the evening or day before Christmas Day (24 December)
Christmas tree an evergreen tree (вечнозелёное дерево) (often a spruce -ель) that people decorate (украшать) with lights and ornaments at Christmas
egg-nog a traditional Christmas drink made of alcohol with beaten eggs (взбитые яйца) and milk

Father Christmas an imaginary (выдуманный) being who brings presents for children on the night before Christmas Day (also known as Santa Claus) - traditionally an old man with a red suit (костюм) and white beard (борода)

mistletoe (омела) a parasitic plant (растение-паразит) with white berries (ягода), traditionally used as a Christmas decoration
reindeer a deer with large antlers (оленьи рога) found in some cold climates (believed to pull the sleigh (сани) for Santa Claus or Father Christmas) (северный олень)

the star of Bethlehem the star (звезда) that announced (возвещать) the birth (рождение) of Jesus
tinsel      a decoration consisting of thin strips (ленты, полоски) of shiny metal foil (блестящая фольга), traditionally used at Christmas (мишура)
turkey (индейка)    a bird (птица) like a large chicken (курица), traditionally eaten at Christmas
white Christmas   a Christmas with snow on the ground
Xmas    abbreviation (аббревиатура) for Christmas
