China: First ever primate clones unveiled in Suzhou

The first primates to be successfully cloned using somatic cell nuclear transfer, eight-week old Zhong Zhong and six-week old Hua Hua, were unveiled in Suzhou on Wednesday.
The pair of long-tailed macaques can be seen frolicking in their incubator, unaware of the scientific milestone they represent.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences carried out the cloning in order to further biological experimentation, given exact clones will provide more reliable data during testing.
Dolly the Sheep became the first mammalian clone in 1996 when she was born in Scotland, with more than 20 other species undergoing the same process, including rabbits, cows and dogs.
The cloning of monkeys, however, is also significant because of their genetic similarity with human beings.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences presented their progress and findings after successfully producing the first primate clones made by somatic cell nuclear transfer in Huairou, northern Beijing, on Wednesday.
Two long-tailed macaques were born recently in Shanghai using the same method which produced Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal to be born using such a procedure in 1996.
Researchers named the new-borns Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, born eight and six weeks ago respectively, after the Chinese adjective 'Zhonghua' which means Chinese nation or people.
The technical milestone, presented on January 24 in the journal Cell, makes it a realistic possibility for labs to conduct research with customisable populations of genetically uniform monkeys.
«If their parentage is different, then their genetic background is not identical. So when you do these biological experiments, the outcomes also wouldn't be the same,» explained Bai Chunli, the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The house belongs to a Vitebsk-based businessman who at first reportedly planned to build a home for his family, but after divorcing his wife, started decorating the property with spooky elements.
The owner himself does not live there.
