  • Thank You - Part 2

    2008-04-18 00:25

    Miscellaneous

Actually, this should really be Thank You - Part 0.

It seems that in my attempts to thank everyone for their kind birthday wishes and pass along some cute stories from the kids, I neglected to thank the most important person in my life - my wife, Leslie.

She was the first one to wish me a happy birthday yesterday, and the one who helped the kids with the cards and the presents, of course (thankfully, Jacob hasn't discovered Amazon one-click checkouts yet), and made the delicious cake (of which Noah did in fact get to share).

So thank you, honey, for a wonderful day.

    LotusSpeakingStories

It seems like our Lotus blogging community loves "themes".  For example, over the last few weeks many people have been blogging about "How I got started in Notes".  (yes, I know I did not tell my story).  So in my post about public speaking, I suggested that we share our personal horror stories.  Rocky is the first to tell his, about an adventure he had at Devcon.  So below is mine, and I challenge you to all share as well.  I'm going to change it a bit though, they don't have to be horror stories.  If you have a fantastic story, share that as well.  To make them easier to find, how about we all add the tag LotusSpeakingStories.  (I wish we had done the same with HowIGotStartedWithNotes)

My story is from one of the years which I was part of the Opening General Session keynote at Lotusphere.  I was walking around on stage, looking out into the vastness of the Grand Ballroom room, as I was giving a speech to set up one of my demos.  Now if you've never been on a stage before, let me try and explain a few things.  First, you can only really see the first few rows, after that it all becomes a blur, a large sea of floating heads.  Second, the sound is very different that what you hear sitting in the audience.  It is hard to explain, it is not really an echo, but the sound is sort of hollow.  Your mind knows what you're saying, you feel your mouth moving, and when you hear your own words coming out of the speakers your brain processes them at the same time as your trying to remember your next line.  So back to me walking around stage... I'm in the middle of saying something, when everything just goes quiet.  It was like all the air just got sucked out of the room in an instant.  I realize I am still talking, but I can no longer hear any words.

Oh crap, my microphone is not working!  Months of rehearsal, thousands of people watching, panic sets in!

You know in the movies where time slows down, and you can see and hear everything in perfect clarity, including the sweat dripping off your brow down and trickling down your cheek?  Well whomever first put that into a movie, must of had a microphone go out on stage!

With my heart rate peaking around 190bpm, I walked over to the podium, and picked up the handheld microphone and continued.  When I went backstage afterwards, the stage manager hugged me and told me how amazing I handled it.  I looked at him in shock.  I said "What are you talking about, I stood up there for 30 seconds doing nothing".  That is when he showed me the tape.  The entire thing lasted about 3 seconds!  Let me tell you, time really can stand still.

As it turns out, what they think happened is that people with those Nextel push to talk mobile walkie-talkie/telephones where using them, and that interfered with the signal.  So folks, when people say please turn off your cell phones, PLEASE listen!!!

Two other quick things I'll share:
    - One, it is very funny when the stage crew has to set up a teleprompter specifically for you to use, since you're shorter than the other speakers!
    - Two, remember above where I mentioned that a large crowd just sort of blurs together?  Well one of our Lotus coworkers at the time had very platinum blonde hair.  As luck would have it, they were sitting in just the right location where one of the spotlights was perfectly highlighting their hair!  So yes the audience was one big blur, with the exception of this platinum blonde head floating in space.  It was quite hypnotic. ;-)

Your turn.  (and I don't want to hear anything about picturing the crowd naked!)

    Lotus Connections

At Lotusphere 2008 in January, Lotus announced our partnership with enterprise software maker Socialtext.   The first part of this partnership enables the integration of Lotus Connections and Socialtext's wiki software.   Today, Socialtext announced Socialtext version 3.0, adding features that include dashboards and people directories.  By basing their product on open standards, this will allow for even greater integration with other parts of Lotus's collaboration portfolio, as well as services from a variety of 3rd parties.   Congratulations all around.

  • Air travel - a modest proposal

    2008-04-17 12:46

    Fun and Games

This morning my wife showed me this article from the Star Tribune (no login needed) about the past days of air travel, and my attention was caught by the photo of an air stewardess entertaining the passengers (except, apparently, for one fellow), by playing music on an electronic organ on a 1959 flight.

How far we have fallen since those days! Live music on a flight! Why aren't they doing that anymore? And look how big the seats are! These days airlines seem to be focusing entirely on cutting costs, and so they take away and take away from their passengers. Pretty soon they'll rip out all the seats and have everyone stand -- they take up too much room sitting down. If you pack them in tight enough and put a huge long strap around the bunch of them, they won't fall down when you go through turbulence. I'm sure we could easily quadruple the number of people on a flight.

Someday soon there's got to be a rebound -- the customers will revolt. Really, musicians are not that expensive when you divide by the number of passengers on a flight (especially if you don't have seats), and wouldn't you prefer to take the jazz flight to New Orleans instead of the boring old economy flight? It's like starting your vacation early. Likewise the blues flight to Chicago (or they could do jazz too I suppose). Or the Broadway show tunes flight to New York? There might not be as many takers for the polka flight to St. Paul, though.

  • The J. Lance Scale of Bug Stupidity

    2008-04-17 02:57

    HI,
It's not John Lance here.  But I'm posting something he wrote. Here in the Design Studio, today was "one of those days"...  the kind when bugs that we've been lobbying for end up getting marked as "NPTF." (Officially that stands for "no plans to fix ever"... and I don't think I can publish some of the other  phrases we've made up for that acronym....). John lightened our day with his scale of bug stupidity, so I thought I'd share it here. It would be almost funny... if it's weren't true...

  • Thank You!

    2008-04-16 21:02

    Miscellaneous

Thank you for all the pings, tweets, wall posts, e-cards, and e-mails with birthday wishes.  (And thank you to Facebook, I guess, for sharing it with everyone:)

My birthday started off with a big hug and birthday wishes from Jacob (6), who followed it up by guessing that I was 67 years old.  (I gave him a hint that it ended in "7," and that's where he went.  I even have a Birthday Card that wishes me a happy 67th birthday.  Does this mean I at least get the Senior Citizen discount at the movies?)

Noah (3) was apparently concerned about giving me a birthday cake, because he thought that it meant I would eat it all and there wouldn't be any left over for him.  We've been assuring him all day that there would be some left for him, but I don't think he's going to believe us until the fork is in his hand and the frosting is smeared all over his face.

From the family I got the first 3 seasons of Lost on DVD, and I'm looking forward to starting into that.  (And don't even think about dropping any spoilers... although given that we're up to season 4 now, I'm guessing they don't find themselves "found" at the end of seasons 1, 2, or 3... or maybe not.  I guess I'll just have to watch it :)

    Anyway - thanks again!
  • Problems deploying Sametime Connect clients?

    2008-04-16 20:43

    Sametime

Administrators may be unable to deploy the Sametime Connect client (stand-alone) with the default setup.exe and setup.bat files.  Installation using the following methods may fail:
    • Software Installation Suite
    • SMS
    • Altiris
    • Windows AT command execution
    • Windows SCHTASKS command execution

Development has released a hotfix for the issue, which is available on IBM Fix Central:

    ST-Windows-2008-4-14-DAPI-7BLP5T.zip

This hotfix corrects a defect that prevents it from being executed by a non-administrative account, using the Windows Run As functionality to give Administrator rights. It also resolves the problem of running the installer using the methods listed above as the System account.

See Technote #1302764 for the latest.
  • Two developerWorks articles published last week

    2008-04-16 19:08

    social bookmark

    Hello,
Though they were published last week, I didn't want these articles to go unnoticed. The first is by IBM Technical Evangelist Frank Jania (with help from his friends) and is a new take on authoring a developerWorks piece: "Fifty ways to leave your bookmark: An experiment in social authoring". It's actually pretty cool; here's the Abstract, with "bonus lyrics":

Last year, a pool of potential authors were challenged to write an example of code, each from a different programming language, using the Atom Publishing Protocol (AtomPub) and Dogear as the AtomPub-enabled service. This article presents the results of this unique social authoring experiment.

"The problem's all inside your code," she said to me
"The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your bookmark...”

The other article published last week is the first part of an exciting four-part series on migrating to the Linux desktop environment, titled "IBM open collaboration client solution: An overview" It introduces us to OCCS, the "desktop of the future":

Abstract: Learn what's involved when introducing a Linux client pilot in your organization, including planning for business and IT requirements, architecture decisions, risks, and understanding how IBM's open collaboration client is used to implement this desktop of the future, today.

    Thanks everyone!

  • Free is good

    2008-04-16 18:48

    Messaging

I've been meaning to write about the concept of "free" for a few weeks, after Wired ran a story called, "Free! Why $0.00 is the future of business" a few weeks back.  I notice that they did not drop their own subscription price to free, but OK.  The article is a good one and makes a point as to why so many vendors have gotten into the act of giving things away...either as trial editions, limited editions, a sub-segment of their offerings/capabilities, or the like.  Free certainly removes a barrier to adoption, and can pay back in terms of the value of data collected associated with free, the brand equity created, the awareness/buzz/word-of-mouth, or the upsell opportunities.  Of course, in some cases, free offers are simply corporate benevolence, and that's nice, too.

A few freebies that have crossed my radar in the last few days:
    • I recently had the opportunity to tell a customer who wants to be able to do mail merge from Word into Notes about Integra for Notes Personal Edition. which is free.  It has a few other cool features, including being able to export your Notes contacts into a spreadsheet-readable format.  Cool stuff.

I'm also amazed as Google's gmail is now up to 6.5 GB of free storage per mailbox.  It's really starting to make the days of 100 MB mailbox quotas look a little weird.
  • bMighty.com - UC for SMB

    2008-04-16 16:01

    Sametime

bMighty.com recently published a great article on the value that SMBs can get from Unified Communications.

One of the companies they spoke to, Celina Insurance, provides some insight into the value they see and how they got their workforce - with a median age of 56, no less - to adopt instant messaging and UC capabilities.

At first, there was some resistance over things like interruptions.  I think Robert Schoenfelt, Celina's CIO, did a great job of responding:  "The CIO quashed their annoyance. 'When you can tell me when the phone is going to ring, I'll tell you when you're going to get a message,' he told them."

The article continues to explain other ways they helped spread adoption of IM inside the company.

Then there was the top-down acceptance at Celina when employees realized that the company CEO had learned the technology. "There was a picture of him in his leather jacket and sunglasses [with his identity on the site]. People said, 'If he's going to use it, I guess I'm going to do it, too,'" Shoenfelt laughs.

Ultimately, acceptance came once incoming requests were handled more easily, eliminating backlog, and people could suddenly work at home as efficiently as at the office. "Everybody latched on," Shoenfelt says, adding that Sametime changed the culture of the company.

Akiba Saeedi also brought up an essential point about seeing adoption and value of UC - integrating it into your business applications and processes:

Akiba Saeedi, IBM's program director of unified communications and collaboration, calls it the "stickiness factor." UC is more likely to be accepted when you "inject it into the [existing] business process" to simplify employees' lives.

If you're not familiar with Celina's story, head on over here to read the full case study.  They've seen some really remarkable benefits from the use of this technology, including:
    • 50 percent reduction in phone calls and costs due to instant messaging
    • 40 percent reduction in head count while maintaining the same volume of business due to streamlined processes
    • Policy turnaround times reduced from weeks to days by integrating and automating business processes that span Celina and its agents

  • Microsoft OCS Futures: Quick, everyone, wait two years!

    2008-04-16 15:54

    Collaboration

I was reading through Michael Osterman's summary of Microsoft's INTERACT08 UC-focused event, and one bullet stuck out for me in particular:

Microsoft admitted that it needs to do a better job at offering voicemail survivability and provide a better means of maintaining function in the event of a loss of connection to the data center, perhaps providing backup capabilities via the public switched telephone network (PSTN). These issues will be addressed in Office Communications Server (OCS) 2010.

Really?  Wait two more years for voicemail survivability and assurances that I won't lose my phone system due to a connection problem with the data center?

I guess this is why we're seeing so many people interested in working with us and our telephony, audio and video partners - people that have proven solutions in market today.
