Russia’s short-track speed skating team and other athletes vowed on Friday in Moscow to keep fighting for their right to participate in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
“Of course the situation is very difficult. I just don’t understand anything. They [IOC] will not say anything why they didn’t invite me”, said six-time Olympic gold medallist short-track speed-skater Victor Ahn.
Ahn’s team member Semen Elistratov vowed “to go and fight to the end, to defend our honour and honour of our athletes who were deceitfully, nastily and inexplicably suspended.”
“The medal’s value is rising, as for me, because the fight will be more intense. We’ll stand for them [our banned athletes],” affirmed Russian bobsledder Maxim Andrianov.
The Russian Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday that the IOC’s preliminary list of athletes for the Games did not include multiple Olympic champion Ahn or some other highly rated athletes, such as cross country skiing world champion Sergei Ustyugov and biathlete Anton Shipulin.
The IOC hasn’t given any explanation for its decision so far.

Head of the Russian Ski Federation Elena Vyalbe condemned the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to ban some athletes from competing in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Game, during an interview in the Austrian town of Seefeld on Friday.
Vyalbe said that she did not «consider it necessary to forgive such cynicism, the way we are being treated now.» Commenting on IOC President Thomas Bach's statement that «Russia needs to be grateful that this number of athletes have been invited to the Olympics,» Vyalbe said that she regretted when she «shook his hand and we sat at the same table with him.»
On Thursday, the Russian Olympic Committee announced that 169 Russian athletes would be allowed by the IOC to take part in the PyeongChang Winter Games.
Leading medal contenders such as cross-country skier Sergei Ustyugov, biathlete Anton Shipulin and speed skater Victor Ahn were not among the approved athletes, despite having no publicly revealed doping violations.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) heard the last round of appeals from banned Russian athletes on Saturday at the International Conference Centre Geneva.
The Russian flagbearer from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and Olympic medallist for bobsleigh Alexandr Zubkhov was among those in attendance.
CAS will deliver a verdict before the forthcoming Olympic games in Pyeongchang this February.
The competitors were banned for life and, in some cases, stripped of their medals following an investigation by the International Olympic Committee into allegations of state-sponsored doping.
Russia denies the allegations and is seeking to clear athletes' names.
