Click here for Simon Clement’s video from the RSO Outdoor Championships. Love that introduction- it was nice to watch the relays on video that I saw live.
In metamorphosis, Andrew Love asks ‘Will continued high gas prices, leading to vastly more expensive travel, have damaging long term consequences to a sport that requires frequent travel?‘.

Today marks the half-way point of the SSW Fundraising Drive. To donate, support, and help out, please click on the image below.
As I mentionned on day 2 of the fundraiser, I’ll be traveling to Europe in order to train and compete. Some of the funds will go to help fund the training and racing.
I purchased an airline ticket from Toronto-Paris for early July and Madrid-Toronto for mid-September. I was lucky to find the ticket for only $775.
To be honest with you, I haven’t quite decided how I will treat SSW when I get to Europe. I should have regular access to the internet. So I need to ask myself will I want to maintain the site as I do now? Will I transform SSW into a blog and document, log, and share my experiences? Maybe I will take a short break from SSW?
One thing remains; I will leave to Europe in the best shape that I can be, and once I am there, my focus will be training and racing. Whatever comes beyond that- cultural experiences, trips to Naples to eat pizza, going to art galleries- will be bonus.
Whether I share my experiences on SSW while I am in Europe or when I return home, I don’t expect to share anything earth shattering. I can’t claim that I’ll offer a unique or new perspective, but I will do my best at offering what is new and unique for me.
All of your donations are important in supporting SSW and my quest at being the best possible athlete that I can. Thank you for your time and support-
Andrew’s Speed Skating Blog has a report on Hamburg and Duisburg. His lively account of the racing action includes ‘I recall looking back at about Km 23 and seeing the peloton with a bit over 20 skaters. What the hell happened? The course lead through some wonderful passages of cobble stone, with a cobble stone roundabout around a fountain, which stuck out in my memory as dangerous as hell. The cobble stones also went over a few hundred meters, and switched between cobble stone types (skateable vs. painfull)…‘.
‘The Subaru XTech guy and the Stadler skater in white behind him hit the asphalt. Marcel and I jumped the flying line and our chips didn’t register (Would’ve loved to see a picture of that)‘- photo posted on and caption from Andrew’s Speed Skating Blog and by Norbert Hartig
