Israel: Thousands take to Tel Aviv streets against alleged corruption

Thousands of Israelis rallied on Saturday for the fourth consecutive week in Tel Aviv demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign over corruption allegations.
Protesters shouted slogans and carried banners demanding transparency and accountability from elected officials.
“I came like everybody, against the corruption, and against the government and against the liars and against all the stories you can hear,” claimed one protester.
“This is the government that does not represent the majority of the population here, but just a tiny group”, added another one.
Right-wing protesters also took part in a counter demo, calling on the state to deport asylum seekers.
In the past year, Netanyahu was questioned seven times in two corruption probes, which he claims to be false accusations from his opponents.
If charged, the prime minister would be under pressure to resign or to call new elections.
Venezuela: National Assembly threatens to expel Brazilian and Canadian diplomats

Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly President Delcy Rodriguez announced plans to remove Brazilian ambassador Ruy Pereira and Canada's charge d'affaires Craig Kowalik from their posts during a press conference in Caracas on Saturday.
The measure will be effective “until the constitutional link that the ‘de facto’ government violated is restored,” explained Rodriguez.
Pereira and Kowalik have been critical of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for apparently attempting to consolidate his party’s rule and force the opposition out of the picture.
Rodriguez also claims the Canadian has tweeted «rude and vulgar» comments about Venezuela in the past.
US envoy Todd Robinson also recently criticised Maduro for introducing a measure which will, in effect, exclude several opposition parties from competing in next year’s elections.

An antifa counter-protester was hit by a pickup truck on Saturday while interrupting the 'March for Jesus' which was organised by Patriot Prayer in Portland.
As Patriot Prayer held their march and prayers led by US President Donald Trump supporter Joey Gibson., a small group of antifa protesters arrived, speaking through a megaphone and extolling the virtues of communism.
«You saw that flag, right, with the cross on it? That's a known white supremacist symbol, so they are going around pushing their Christianity on people who are not necessarily Christian. Their obsession with their holiday, their obsession with freedom of speech marks that they want to hurt people,» said the protester who was later hit.
He ran across the Hawthorne Bridge and was quickly struck by the vehicle, with several marchers running to help the injured man as another pocket jeered.
Brazil: Lula takes part in football match ahead of corruption trial

Former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva opened a new football pitch in Guararema, Sao Paulo state, and took part in the subsequent match on Saturday.
The event, which was attended by more than 1,500 people, doubled up as a rally to support Lula’s presidential candidature in the upcoming 2018 Brazilian elections before he faces a trial next January.
“We want to make a symbolic gesture that Brazilian people have to get on the field to win the game,” explained Joao Pedro Stedile, the director of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) at the opening of the Dr. Socrates Brasileiro pitch.
Lula was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for corruption earlier in the year, one of the seven charges he is accused of.
The former president appealed and a second court will decide on the case in January.

Former President of Peru Alberto Fujimori was taken from his jail cell to hospital in Lima after suffering from a sudden drop in blood pressure on Saturday.
Doctors say the illness is potentially life threatening and it comes after the 79-year-old was hospitalised twice this year due to an abnormal heart rhythm.
Fujimori, who was president of the South American state from 1990 to 2000, is serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses which he was convicted for in 2009.
He is currently being treated at the Japanese-Peruvian centenary clinic in the capital.

Residents of former gaddafi stronghold Bani Walid expressed on Friday hope for the comeback of Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi -son of Libya's former leader- to politics following rumours of his release from prison.
One local said that Saif al-Islam is the answer to Libya's enduring political crisis. «He has the needed experience to lift the country to a better place,» he said.
Another stated Saif al-Islam should run for office «since he has been pardoned.» He added that Saif al-Islam needed «the criminal court to lift the warrants against him, so that he faces no restrictions internally or internationally.»
Bani Walid is a former stronghold of former leader Muammar al-Gaddafi and the city Saif al-Islam reportedly fled to before being detained.
Rumours of his release have been supported by sources including the Military and Municipal councils of Zintan, who released a statement condemning his release. In addition his lawyer Khaled al-Zaidi stated Saif was moving to another Libyan city due to security reasons and planned to make a public statement to the Libyan people in support of national reconciliation. News of his release are also backed up by claims he is leading military campaigns against militants.
Proir to 2011, Saif al-Islam was expected to be the successor to his father. Since the Libyan uprising, he has been detained by militia in a prison in Zintan. He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity committed against civilians from the start of the uprising.

Supporters of Alexei Navalny rallied in Rostov-on-Don, on Sunday, to hold a vote for his candidacy for the presidency.
A representative on the local authorities stated that Teatralnaya Square, where the rally was being held, was «not a specially designated place» and thus is not suitable for public events such as protests and demonstrations.
However, the organisers of the event decided to continue collecting signatures to complete their symbolic voting process. Reportedly, the legitimacy of the voting records can be challenged, since all the requirements have not been met.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny submitted all necessary documents to register himself as a candidate for the upcoming Russian presidential elections in Moscow on Sunday.
Footage captured Navalny walking alongside his supporters to the Russian Central Election Commission (CEC). Before entering the building he gave a short statement to the press.
«This is a documented evidence of a widespread political movement that exists. And today we submit this evidence and say that it's impossible not to register us for the election,» he said.
Navalny will run for the presidency as a self-nominated candidate.
On December 24th, 20 rallies have been held in 20 cities in support of his nomination.
Previously, Russian CEC head stated that Navalny is not eligible to participate in the presidential election since he was conditionally sentenced for the embezzlement of «Kirovles» and has an outstanding conviction.
The CEC is expected to make a decision on Navalny's application after all obligatory pre-election procedures, such as party congresses and meetings, are concluded.

Spanish King Felipe VI used his Christmas message to call for responsible thinking and respect for plurality from the new Catalan government, in his annual address from the Zarzuela Palace on the outskirts of Madrid on Sunday.
“A few days ago, the people of Catalonia voted to choose their representatives in Parliament. They must now tackle the problems which face all Catalans, respecting plurality of opinion and thinking responsibly for the common good,” he said.
The Spanish monarch admitted that 2017 had been a “difficult year” for him and for Spain. He warned that “the path cannot lead once again to conflict or exclusion” in Catalonia.
Felipe VI has significantly softened his tone since he last commented on Catalan independence. In October he dedicated an entire special address to the issue, reserving strong criticism for separatist leaders.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was startled by a fan while on stage during the 6th Ordinary Congress of the Sirnak Provincial Presidency in the southern Turkish town on Sunday.
The incident occurred while Erdogan was on stage greeting the audience. A man suddenly jumped up and tried to hug him, as the Turkish leader and his guards pushed him away.
The man is reported to be Huseyin Demircan and, according to local media, he said that his «only goal is to be hugged by the president, but I think I was misunderstood.»
Demircan was removed from the stage by Erdogan's guards and taken into custody. Local media says that he has since been released.
State of Palestine: Abbas attends midnight mass in Bethlehem

The President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas arrived at the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem for Christmas midnight mass on Sunday.
Abbas was greeted by well-wishers before the service began in the West Bank city.
The Church of the Nativity holds great significance for many Christians. Originally commissioned by the first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great, the church is believed to be sat upon the site of Jesus’s birth.
