Two wobbly microphones and a dog on stage didn't stop Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) chancellor candidate Martin Schulz from delivering his speech to cheering supporters at a campaign rally Potsdam, Friday.
As Schulz struggled to keep in place the unstable lectern microphones, he reiterated that «Germany can do better, it could do so much more if a Social Democrat will become the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.»
He then noticed a small dog dressed up in a red jumper sitting on stage right behind him, and asked: «Who does it belong to? Whose is it? Let it sit here.»
Schulz then continued to address the crowd and noted: «On September 24, the question will be whether you trust the Social Democrats to make this country fairer, because a lot of things are not fair right now in this country.» The chancellor candidate went on saying that the SPD wants «to change many things,» but is «facing a big resistance from the conservative block introduced by Angela Merkel and Horst Seehofer in this federal government.»
The German Federal Election is set to take place on September 24. According to latest opinion polls, SPD is currently trailing German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) by more than 13 percentage points.

Two Russian children, eight-year-old Adlan Dakaev and nine-year-old Khadija Huseinova, who had been taken by their parents to Iraq when they joined self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS), were returned to the arms of their relatives in Grozny, on Thursday September 14.
The footage shows relatives spending time with the kids. According to the grandmother of Khadija, «I am very grateful to our president for all that he does, for helping our children. If not for him, then most likely they could not take it from there.»
Adlan's mother pointed out that «at first, there was pain, then joy. As soon as we saw him, we could not come back to ourselves. It was very difficult. Thank God he was returned to us.»
Reportedly, a number of Russian-speaking children are still in Iraqi orphanages across the country. Their relatives remain hopeful to see the kids safe back in their home.

The Spanish Civil Guard raided a printing house in Saint Feliu de Llobregat and another in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat on Friday, as the central government continues to crackdown on materials connected to Catalonia’s upcoming independence referendum on 1 October, which the Spanish Constitutional Court has declared illegal.
In addition, the Spanish Civil Guard handed official notifications by the Spanish Supreme Court to Catalan media outlets to cease publishing information and advertisements related to the referendum. The notifications were sent to Vilaweb, El Nacional, Racó Català and El Punt Avui.
The Catalonian government launched the official ‘yes’ campaign for the upcoming independence referendum on Thursday.

The church which is also a clerical centre in the heart of Paris is hosting an exhibition of Orthodox iconography artwork, which Tatiana Shumoya, Master Emeritus of the Arts of the Russian Federation, describes as «needle painting,» including many pieces of embroidery artwork.
The Orthodox Church of Paris is a 4,800 square metre complex, opened in 2016, that includes a parish centre, offices, apartments and a French-Russian primary school as well as a cultural centre, bookshop, café and exhibition space.

Protesters took to damaging a police car in St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday, during a protest against the court decision to acquit the police officer who shot dead Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011. Police arrested 13 protesters whilst four officers were injured during the protest.
Smith was shot dead in his car in 2011 by former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley, in what was claimed as “self-defence.” Stockley told the court that he shot Smith believing that the 24-year-old African-American was reaching for a gun in his car.
Whether Smith was in possession of a firearm remained the most controversial element of the case, with opponents arguing that the firearm found in Smith’s vehicle was planted by the policeman. The judges ruled that “an urban heroin dealer not in possession of a firearm would be an anomaly.”

Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations Tekeda Alemu, who is holding the post of President of the UN Security Council for the month of September, called for all UN Member States to «fully, comprehensively and immediately» implement the UN Security Council's resolution 2375, which includes the strongest sanctions ever imposed on North Korea.
Alemu was speaking at a stakeout at the UN's headquarters in New York City, on Friday. An emergency meeting had been called after North Korea launched an intermediate-range weapon early on Friday from Sunan, Pyongyang's international airport.
At the meeting the next course of action to take against North Korea will be discussed. Rather than calling for fresh sanctions, ambassadors stressed the need for the earlier agreed-upon sanctions to be implemented immediately.
North Korea's latest missile test flew over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaidom travelling 3,700 km (2,300 miles) and landing in the Pacific Ocean.

The anti-capitalist Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party together with En Comu Podem electoral coalition held a rally in favour of Catalonia’s independence at L'Hospitalet de Llobregat in Barcelona, Thursday, urging the audience to vote “yes” on October 1.
Marta Sibina of En Comu Podem urged the audience to vote asserting that “there were cries of independence but the loudest and most unanimous cry of all was democracy”. She added “vote yes or no, vote blank, vote with a piece of Chorizo in the envelope. What we have to do is to go and vote.”
Various politicians defined the upcoming referendum as an opportunity to exercise democracy and freedom, in a ballot that has been deemed illegal and unconstitutional by the Spanish Supreme Court.
Spain’s Civil Guard has raided printing shops producing material connected to the referendum, while internet websites have been closed down as Spain moves to counter the referendum.

People were seen celebrating in the regional capital of Erbil, on Friday, as the Iraqi Kurdish Parliament approved plans to hold an independence referendum vote on Monday, September 25.
Footage shows Kurdish Iraqis carrying the flag of Iraqi Kurdistan and writing well wishes on a placard in the shape of the region that they want to be autonomous from Baghdad.
The Iraqi government has opposed the referendum measure and has maintained that such a vote «lacks legal implications and [is] a threat to the unity of Iraq.»

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy stated that he won't allow the Catalan independence referendum, speaking to Popular Party members in Barcelona, Friday.
He also congratulated police guards, who have seized about 100,000 «propaganda posters» dedicated to the independence referendum. Rajoy called the decision of the Catalan government to support the referendum as «an attempt «to liquidate all the laws, constitution and autonomy statute included, replace them with a legality that has been invented and also do so by clearly undemocratic procedures».
«I say it with the same serenity that firmness, there will be no referendum, there will not be one,» underlined Spanish Prime Minister.
President of the Generalitat of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont signed a decree officially calling for Catalonia's «self-determination referendum», to be held October 1. Spain's constitutional court ruled to suspend the referendum law the following day.

Dozens of people gathered outside the Ukrainian embassy in Budapest on Friday, to protest Ukraine's new education law that is set to allegedly limit the right for minorities to speak in their mother tongue, causing uproar in Hungary over the fate of Ukraine's historical Hungarian minority.
The protesters brought books by Hungarian writers and laid them outside the Ukrainian embassy along with a letter of demands to the ambassador, as well as participating in a torch-lit procession.
Lorinc Nacsa, a member of the Youth Christian Democratic Alliance, described the move as a violation of Ukraine's basic treaty with Hungary, with EU association accords and with its own constitution.
About 150 000 people speak Hungarian and live predominantly by Ukraine's western border. Romania and Poland, with their own sizable minorities in the country, have expressed similar concern about the new legislation.

The Syrian Arab Army gained full control of Al-Baghiliyah district, located northeast of Deir ez-Zor, on Friday, coming face-to-face with the US-backed militias on the west side of the Euphrates River.
The Syrian Army has been focusing on clearing the east bank of the Euphrates from fighters of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS), while the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, (SDF) have consolidated their control over the west.
A spokesman of the SDF has reportedly stated that Syrian Arab Army troops will not gain permission to cross the Euphrates in establishing control over the entirety of Deir ez-Zor province.
The SAA broke the 3-year-long siege on Deir ez-Zor on 5 September, significantly reducing crucial supply routes for IS.

A reconstruction of Peter the Great's famed amber office opened at the Parisian residence of Russian Ambassador to France, in the French capital, Friday.
The opening ceremony was organised by the Russian Ministry of Culture and was held on the eve of the Days of the European heritage, which kicked off in France on Saturday. Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky and Russian Ambassador to France Alexander Orlov were in attendance of the event.
During the opening ceremony, it was noted that amber has long been used for the creation of diplomatic gifts, with the Amber Room being one of such gifts, which became the basis for the Amber Room.
The event was also devoted to the books, especially made by Russian masters as gifts for heads of foreign states on behalf of the Russian president. The idea for the books was conceived by Anatoly Strigo and Anjelica Kalinina.
First built for King Frederick Wilhelm the First of Prussia's palace in Berlin, the Amber Room was presented to Peter the Great by his Prussian allies, in 1716, as part of securing their alliance against Sweden in the Great Northern War.
Under the reign of Empress Elizabeth, the Amber Room was embellished and the panels were complemented with the Florentine mosaics. Catherine the Great then moved it from St. Petersburg's Winter Palace to her new summer residence in Tsarskoye Selo. During the Second World W, the Amber Room was seized by the Germans and moved to Koenigsberg, the capital of East Prussia, which is presently the Russian city of Kaliningrad.

The German leader ignored the protest and focussed on addressing foreign policy and security issues. «In the last four years... sometimes we've learnt from awful experiences. That's laborious work. But everything would be better than a military dispute.»
Counter-terrorism policies were introduced in 2016 to provide further information and background checks on those entering Germany in refugee status. The protesters reportedly erected roadblocks and clashed with police, who in turn fired teargas and rubber bullets at the crowds. At 32 people were detained and and ten officers were injured, reports say. The home of Mayor Lyda Krewson was also attacked, with several windows at the residence being reportedly smashed by protesters.
Former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley shot Smith to death in 2011, in what he claims was self-defence, believing that the 24-year-old African-American was reaching for a gun in his car.
Whether Smith was in possession of a firearm remained the most controversial element of the case, with opponents arguing that the firearm found in Smith's vehicle was planted by the policeman in the aftermath of the shooting. The judges ruled that «an urban heroin dealer not in possession of a firearm would be an anomaly.»

Some 200 people gathered outside the headquarters of pharmaceutical giant Bayer, in Berlin, Saturday, to rally against compulsory vaccine consultations.
The activists demanded a rescinding of tightening the vaccination rules instigated by a decline in immunisations, according to German authorities.
Protester, Dr. Andy Wakefield stated «mandatory vaccination is nothing more or less than forced medical experimentation.» One of the protesters added that «parents have to decide themselves what they want to do.»
One of the recent measures stipulate that kindergartens are to inform authorities if parents fail to prove they have attended a doctors' consultation on child vaccinations.
Bayer is believed to have a strong lobby on promoting compulsory vaccination. Recently it has been involved in a number scandals, including allegations that they sold HIV-infected protein to Asia and Latin America.

Hundreds of members of the trade union 'Solidarity' rallied outside of the European Commissions' offices in Warsaw on Saturday, in protest at the body's attempted prevention of government reforms.
Protester's chants and banners were aimed at Frans Timmermans, first vice-president of the European commission, who has promised to impose maximum sanctions against Poland over their «dangerous» judiciary law changes.»
Piotr Duda, Solidarity's Chairman, declared that «We are here in Warsaw but if we have to we will go to Brussels — because the Solidarity trade union is first and foremost an effective union that starts the issues and ends them.»
Mateusz Morawiecki, Polish Development Minister and Deputy Premier, announced plans to nationalise the pension system in June, ending their second-pillar (OFE) system.
