Take, for instance, the fairly rummy matter of Lady Malvern and her son Wilmot (возьмите, например, довольно странное дело леди Малверн и ее сына Вилмота). A moment before they turned up, I was just thinking how thoroughly all right everything was.


It was one of those topping mornings (утро было превосходное: «было одно из этих замечательных утр»), and I had just climbed out from under the cold shower, feeling like a two-year-old (и я как раз выбрался из-под холодного душа, чувствуя себя как двухлетний). As a matter of fact, I was especially bucked just then because the day before I had asserted myself with Jeeves — absolutely asserted myself, don't you know (собственно говоря, именно тогда я особенно был доволен собой, потому что за день до того я настоял на своем с Дживсом — полностью настоял на своем, знаете ли; to buck = to buck up — /разг./ оживиться, приободриться; to assert oneself — отстаивать свои права). It was one of those topping mornings, and I had just climbed out from under the cold shower, feeling like a two-year-old. So that's how things stood on this particular morning (так вот обстояли дела в то конкретное утро), and I was feeling kind of manly and independent (и я чувствовал себя этаким мужественным и независимым /человеком/).

So that's how things stood on this particular morning, and I was feeling kind of manly and independent.

"What ho without there (эй, там, снаружи; ho — эй; what ho — эй, там)!"

"Lady Malvern wishes to see you, sir (леди Малверн желает повидать вас, сэр)," said Jeeves. "Eh (э)?"

"Lady Malvern, sir (леди Малверн, сэр). She is waiting in the sitting-room (она ожидает в гостиной)."

"Pull yourself together, Jeeves, my man (возьми себя в руки, Дживс, друг мой; to pull oneself together — взять себя в руки, собраться с духом)" I said, rather severely, for I bar practical jokes before breakfast (сказал я довольно строго, ибо я не поощряю розыгрышей до завтрака; to bar — /разг./ отвергать, не выносить, не любить; practical — практический; утилитарный; joke — шутка; practical joke — шутка, сыгранная с кем-л.; розыгрыш). "What ho without there!"

"Lady Malvern wishes to see you, sir," said Jeeves. "Eh?"

"Lady Malvern, sir. She is waiting in the sitting-room."

"Pull yourself together, Jeeves, my man," I said, rather severely, for I bar practical jokes before breakfast. "You know perfectly well there's no one waiting for me in the sitting-room. How could there be when it's barely ten o'clock yet?"

"I gathered from her ladyship, sir, that she had landed from an ocean liner at an early hour this morning."


This made the thing a bit more plausible (это делало ситуацию немного более правдоподобной). I remembered that when I had arrived in America about a year before (я помнил, что, когда я прибыл в Америку примерно год назад), the proceedings had begun at some ghastly hour like six (приготовления к высадке начались в какое-то невообразимое время, чуть ли не в шесть; proceedings — происшествия, события, явления; ghastly — наводящий ужас, жуткий; hour — час), and that I had been shot out on to a foreign shore considerably before eight (и что меня выкинули на чужеземный берег задолго до восьми; to shoot — стрелять; to shoot out — /разг./ вышвырнуть, выгнать; considerably — гораздо, значительно).


This made the thing a bit more plausible. I remembered that when I had arrived in America about a year before, the proceedings had begun at some ghastly hour like six, and that I had been shot out on to a foreign shore considerably before eight.


"Who the deuce is Lady Malvern, Jeeves (и кто, черт побери, такая леди Малверн, Дживс)?"

"Her ladyship did not confide in me, sir (ее светлость не /соизволила/ сообщить мне, сэр; to confide — верить, доверять; поверять, сообщать конфиденциально)"

"Is she alone (она одна)?"

"Her ladyship is accompanied by a Lord Pershore, sir (ее светлость сопровождает лорд Першор). I fancy that his lordship would be her ladyship's son (я полагаю, что его светлость — сын ее светлости)."

"Oh, well, put out rich raiment of sorts, and I'll be dressing (а, ладно, выкладывай какие-нибудь богатые одеяния, и я буду одеваться)."
