  Conference and Ph.D. course

Title: "Religion and Subjectivity: Reconsidering the Relational Self"

Time: March 13-15, 2008



The fact that the self is relational has been stated often enough – but
what precisely does this mean? This is still to be explored and explained.
Further, to what extent is it appropriate to oppose the category of
substance (or, subsequently, of the subject or the self) to the category
of relation, and in which sense do we need a 'substantial' correlate of
the relations we investigate? The issue of selfhood in relations will be
approached from different perspectives. Particularly we are aiming at a
dialogue between phenomenology, philosophy of religion and theology,
focusing on accounts of a 'relational ontology of the person' in Luther,
Kierkegaard, Levinas, Ricoeur and Scheler.



Call for papers: Ph.D. students and others are welcome to submit proposals
for short papers on this topic (incl. discussion max. 30 min, no more than
2200 words). If you would like to present a paper, please send an abstract
of about 200-400 words to Claudia Welz at clw@hum.ku.dk.

Deadline: January 20, 2008. A reply will be sent by February 1, 2008.

"Framing Struggles: Critical Approaches to Anthropology and
Sociology"

Until recently, most social research has focused on political and
economic struggles to the detriment of understanding cultural
struggles. But an undue focus on culture tends to ignore the
contested nature of economic and political interactions that provide
the structural underpinnings to cultural form and content.
Anthropology can contribute equally to understanding frames of
struggles, and framing the relevant problematic that needs to be
exposed to public scrutiny, while sociology is able to situate and
analyse these struggles in a broader perspective through its focus on
macro-micro interactions.
The main purpose of this trans-disciplinary conference is to
investigate how cultural, political, and economic struggles are
framed, both by actors and scholars. By framing struggles we mean
the ways in which participants themselves construe and delimit the
meanings of their actions in an era of accelerating global changes,
as well as the manner in which scholars and researchers select their
own frames of reference to make sense of these social upheavals.
Regarding social phenomena in an integrated and multifaceted
persepective, the
conference will reflect on and mediate between broad, distant, and
sometimes seemingly incompatible research fields and approaches e.g.,
religious studies, studies of popular culture, as well as social
movement studies and the scholarship on migration and informal
economy.
Concentrating on a variety of issues concerning struggles, we seek to
encourage critical ethnographic/sociological research enriched by
theoretical grounding. The conference will tackle the issue of
framing struggles from four main perspectives in the following panels
(also see the more detailed descriptions further down):

Panel I: Borders, Economy, Conflict

Panel II: Approaching Religious Modernities: Constructions,
Contestations, Mobilizations

Panel III: Performing and Representing Culture, Ethnicity and
Gender

Panel IV: Activism in (Post-)Socialist Contexts

The conference will take place 13-14 June 2008, at the Central
European University in Budapest, Hungary. Each applicant should
submit an abstract (max. 250 words) and introduction of their
academic affiliation/research topic/general research interests (max.
100 words). The deadline for submissions of the abstracts is the 1

As each panel will have a discussant - an invited scholars from the
relevant field, the approved - candidates will have to submit a
full-length paper by the 01 st of May 2008. This is a strict
deadline.
Conference papers will be made available to all participants in
advance.
The organizers will be able to provide partial reimbursement of
travel expenses and accommodation at a hostel in central Budapest to
a number of panel participants. A possibility exists that some
participants be hosted by students from the department – please
indicate if you are interested in such option.
Participants are also requested to state whether they would need a
visa for Hungary so that organizers can assist in the visa process.

Description of Panels

Panel I: Borders, Economy, Conflict

This panel seeks to scrutinize from a critical and
trans-disciplinary perspective the features of borders: physical and
symbolic, fixed and transgressed. How they separate different
categories of actors, while framing and enforcing their social roles
and identities. However economic, political, and cultural borders
need not necessarily imply "bounded-ness". What we aim to do is to
pinpoint the fluidity, volatility, and mutability of the concept of
'borders'.
Furthermore, we seek to discuss how different sorts of conflict
reinforce, but also displace borders in various everyday contexts and
the manner in which the micro-macro actors involved negotiate,
interpret, transgress, restate and define them through their
practices, interactions, and collisions.
The panel invites papers and visual materials that actively engage
with issues of borders, border-crossing economies, and conflict.
Contributions should include, but are not necessarily restricted to
questions such as:

* Border sovereignty: empire(s) and nation-state(s)
* Border trouble: conflict and trade
* Micro actors vs. macro actors: border economies in a
regional and global context
* Trafficking in humans, arms, and drugs
* Transnational (under)classes, informal economies, and host
states
* International refugees and no-man's land(s)
* Economy without borders: transnational corporations,
international organizations, and global capital

Panel II: Approaching Religious Modernities: Constructions,
Contestations, Mobilizations

The persistence of religion within processes of social change all
around the globe has called into question the secularization
paradigm. Social scientists have been forced to reassess the
theoretical and methodological categories for understanding the
shifting location of religion in various societies and to be more
open to the notion of multiple religious modernities. We are thus in
a fruitful reflexive moment which could open new perspectives on
religious phenomena entangled in social processes. Our panel revolves
around a number of issues which are still waiting for adequate
theoretical and methodological approaches:

* The shifting location of religion within the public sphere
in various social contexts
* Constructing and contesting boundaries between the
'religious' and the 'secular'
* Agents active in the processes of construction/contestation
(state, church, civil or religious associations, academia, new
religious movements etc.)
* The framing of contemporary religious mobilization, both
within world religions (Islam, Christianity, Hinduism etc.)and
indigenous religions
* The emergence of new religious movements (e.g., global
religions such as Pentecostalism)
* The impact of these movements on nation-states and
traditional (historical) religions
* Socio-cultural and political strategies employed by
religious actors in new contexts dominated by global media
technologies and global horizons of consumption

Panel III: Performing and Representing Culture, Ethnicity and
Gender

Performance has become a catch-all term to refer to the practices of
agents as opposed to a prior focus on structure. In the new era of
all kinds of promotion initiatives on behalf of agency, the belief
that agents can resist or contest forces of domination has become
widely celebrated. But this capacity can be called into question and
is itself problematic. Indeed, such performances cannot be properly
understood without taking into consideration their often mediated or
represented character. Therefore, it is worth looking at the interplay
between performances and representation, especially when these
performances become embedded in global networks of production and
circulation.
The main themes of this panel would include the following issues:
* Markets and media as a facilitators of cultural exchanges *
Struggles over cultural recognition through the staging of
performances (arts, sports, tourist practices, etc.)
* Performing gender/race/ethnicity
* The transformation of performances through processes of
interaction and mediation
* Political institutions and the representation of cultural
practices
* Ethnographic writing as representation and the framing
paradigm: the responsibility of ethnographers

Panel IV: Activism in (Post-)Socialist Contexts

In societies where leftist themes of class, economic redistribution,
and social justice have formed or still form the regime's dominant
discourse, social movements trying to make demands related to such
themes face complex problems, for example of avoiding cooptation or
negative associations. This phenomenon can be seen in areas that have
so far been the primary focus of social movement scholarship, i.e.,
with left-wing groups in Western social democracies, but it is
equally present under social democratic regimes in the global south
that have taken a "Third Way". And these complexities are all the more
present among activist groups in societies with a history of
repressive "really exiting" socialism, such as in Eastern Europe.
Our panel calls for papers that explore the complexity of political
contention in such historically determined political contexts. These
could address topics such as:

Framing struggles of oppositional groups under repressive
socialist regimes

Activists strategies in a context dominated by social-
democratic rhetoric

(Dis)Continuities in performances and narratives of present
and past dissent

Strategies for alignment with trans-national activist
campaigns

Relevance of class-based claim making: past and presence

Framing of collective and individual memory in processes of
political transition

Left- or right-wing protest: (un)civil society in post-
socialist contexts

  Патриарший центр духовного развития детей и молодежи при Даниловом монастыре Москвы проводит в январе 2008 г. конференцию православных молодежных лидеров "Семья в современной Церкви: проблемы и пути их решения".

Целью конференции является составления проекта документа "Общие положения организации церковной работы с семьей и молодыми людьми, желающими создать семью".

Документ будет составляться с учетом разработок участников по предложенным ниже темам.

Ключевые вопросы для обсуждения на конференции:



Семья в современном обществе;

Задачи, принципы и формы церковной семейной работы;

Какими ресурсами располагает Русская Православная Церковь для организации работы с семьей;

Соотношение православного понимания брака и современного;

Проповедь семьи;

Семья и община (вплоть до вопроса прихрамовых помещений);

Подготовка к венчанию;

Крещение младенцев. Роль восприемников;

Христианский идеал семьи. Многодетность;

Причастие детей;

Семейная жизнь и аскетика;

Вопросы воцерковления семьи;

Семейно-просветительская работа с желающими создать семью;

Семейно-просветительская работа с молодой семьей;

Проблема встречи с будущим супругом в ограде Церкви.

Участникам конференции предлагается взять для домашней разработки одну из тем. Подготовленные темы станут основой для работы над документом конференции.

На самой конференции в течение трех дней участники, работая в малых группах, будут дорабатывать с учетом общего видения проблемы подготовленные заранее темы и сводить их в единый документ "Общие положения организации церковной работы с семьей и молодыми людьми, желающими создать семью".

Для участия в конференции и подготовительной работе необходимо прислать запрос на e-mail организаторов, в ответ на который будут высланы бланки заявки и анкеты. Организационный денежный взнос не требуется. Проживание участникам не обеспечивается. В течение трех рабочих дней (30, 31 января и 1 февраля) участникам предоставляется возможность питания в трапезной Данилова монастыря.

Центр изучения средневековой культуры при кафедре истории философии
факультета философии и политологии Санкт-Петербургского государственного

посту: трансформации культурных практик от Античности к Средним векам". К
обсуждению предлагаются следующие темы:
 Этос Античности и нравственные установки христианства: смена философских
парадигм и стратегий повседневного поведения;
 Афинская Агора и средневековый монастырь: трансформация социальных
институций;
 Свобода духа и свобода тела: речь и молчание;
 Гражданин и аскет: модели телесных практик.
Проведение мероприятия планируется на базе факультета философии и
политологии Санкт-Петербургского государственного университета в рамках Дней
философии в Санкт-Петербурге (20-22 ноября 2008 года). Приглашаем

Международная конференция
русская софиология в европейской культуре

1 - 5 октября 2008 г.

В 2003-2007 гг. Библейско-богословский институт св. апостола Андрея, совместно с Ostkirchliches Institut (Regensburg) и при поддержке Католического комитета по культурному сотрудничеству (Рим), провел ряд конференций, посвященных русским мыслителям Серебряного века. Было рассмотрено творчество В. С. Соловьева, С. Н. Булгакова, П. А. Флоренского, Н. А. Бердяева и С. Л. Франка. Наша следующая конференция посвящена софиологии – одной из центральных тем русской религиозной философии.
Тема конференции
 

Русская софиология - развитие и интерпретация важнейших универсалий европейской христианской культуры, одна из центральных тем религиозно-философского ренессанса в России. В софиологических категориях русская философско-религиозная мысль (В. Соловьев, С. Булгаков, П. Флоренский, Л. Карсавин и др.) осмысливала проблему единства мирового христианства, видела в них связь с рационалистической традицией Запада, но стремилась к преодолению «отвлеченности ее начал», соединяя ее с нравственностью и одухотворенным стремлением к красоте и гармонии. На путях софиологии русские религиозные философы искали выход из культурного кризиса Европы, неизбежно захватывавшего Россию. Софиология русского Серебряного века была полем идейной борьбы, разделившей «новаторов» и «ортодоксов», но вместе с тем - стимулом обновления и творчества внутри русской православной традиции. В настоящее время софиологические идеи подвергаются переосмыслению в новом историческом контексте, они не утратили своей обновляющей силы. Важнейшие линии диалога между западным и восточным христианством пролегают через софиологическую проблематику. Это особенно важно в условиях, когда культурное и религиозное сотрудничество Запада и Востока Европы приобретает актуальность единственно действенного ответа на грозные вызовы ХХI века. Внимание к софиологическим идеям, их творческое развитие может стать «точкой роста» новых объединительных тенденций.

Конференция будет проходить в Москве с 1 по 5 октября 2008 года. На нее приглашены ведущие философы, богословы и другие специалисты, внесшие значительный вклад в изучение современной русской и западной религиозной философии. В рамках конференции предполагается обсудить следующие темы:

    * Современный межконфессиональный и межрелигиозный диалог в свете идеи всеединства.
    * Ветхозаветные, гностические и христианские истоки русской софиологии.
    * Влияние западной мистической традиции на русскую софиологию.
    * Софиология и тринитарное богословие.
    * Софиология и современная философская мысль.
    * Образ Софии в литературе и искусстве на Западе и на Востоке.

 
ДОКЛАДЫ И ПУБЛИКАЦИЯ
 

Желающие сделать доклад должны представить содержательные тезисы объемом не более 800 слов в электронном виде. Тезисы необходимо прислать в ББИ не позднее 15 июля 2008 г. Оргкомитет конференции осуществляет отбор тезисов и рассылает приглашения предполагаемым докладчикам. Полные тексты отобранных докладов должны быть представлены до 15 августа 2008 г. Помимо докладчиков, предусмотрено участие слушателей (священников, ученых, преподавателей, студентов). Рабочие языки конференции – русский и английский.

По прибытии на конференцию каждый участник получит тезисы всех докладов и программу конференции. Пленарные и секционные доклады рассчитаны на 30 минут. Некоторые доклады будут напечатаны в журнале «Страницы: богословие, культура, образование» и в других изданиях ББИ. Тезисы докладов и сами доклады следует направлять ученому секретарю конференции по следующему адресу:

Регистрация и размещение участников начнется 1 октября. Вечером состоится прием. Отъезд участников – 5 октября после завтрака. Иногородние участники конференции будут обеспечены  проживанием и питанием. Для москвичей предусмотрены обеды, ужины и кофе-паузы.

Количество мест ограничено, поэтому желающим принять участие в конференции настоятельно рекомендуется зарегистрироваться как можно раньше. Участник считается зарегистрированным после подтверждения получения регистрационной формы и сообщения ему о включении в состав участников. Регистрационный взнос для участников из СНГ составляет 600 руб.

Возможна частичная оплата проживания и питания для докладчиков из России и других восточноевропейских стран. Заявления на получение финансовой поддержки должны быть присланы вместе с тезисами докладов. Количество стипендий ограничено.

"ИЕРАРХИЯ И ВЛАСТЬ В ИСТОРИИ ЦИВИЛИЗАЦИЙ

ПЕРВОЕ ИЗВЕЩЕНИЕ:
ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЕ ОБ ОРГАНИЗАЦИИ СЕКЦИЙ
Центр цивилизационных и региональных исследований Института Африки РАН
совместно с факультетом истории, политологии и права Российского
государственного гуманитарного университета организует 23-26 июня 2009 г.
в Москве ПЯТУЮ МЕЖДУНАРОДНУЮ КОНФЕРЕНЦИЮ “ИЕРАРХИЯ И ВЛАСТЬ В ИСТОРИИ
ЦИВИЛИЗАЦИЙ”.

Подобно четырем предыдущим, предстоящая конференция призвана объединить
ученых, исследущих соответствующую проблематику во всем многообразии ее
контекстов, в рамках различных школ и традиций с позиций разных научных
дисциплин: социальной антропологии, археологии, истории, политологии,
социологии, философии, психологии и других.

Основной задачей конференции является обсуждение следующих вопросов:

- иерархические и сетевые структуры в истории культур и цивилизаций;
- цивилизационные и стадиальные модели социально-политической эволюции;
- историческое и этнокультурное многообразие форм социально-политической
организации;
- от локальной общины к мир-системе: этапы, пути и формы политической
интеграции;
- социально-политические и культурно-ментальные факторы общественного
развития;
- культурные и социобиологические основы доминирования в человеческих
сообществах;
- идеология и легитимация власти в различных цивилизациях;
- культурные модели восприятия власти в различных цивилизациях;
- насилие и ненасилие в истории политических институтов;
- доступ к информации как средство политического манипулирования и
мобилизации;
- власть, общество и культура в эпоху глобализации;
- «иерархия и власть»: школы, направления и методы исследования.

Предложения об обсуждении любых иных аспектов общей тематики конференции
также приветствуются.

Рабочие языки конференции – русский и английский.

Оргкомитет конференции будет рад рассмотреть любые предложения по
организации секций, которые поступят не позднее 1 февраля 2008 г. Заявка
на организацию секции должна включать обоснование секции (не более 500
слов) на русском и – обязательно – английском языках, а также указание
фамилии, имени, отчества, ученой степени, ученого звания, места работы,
должности, почтового и электронного адреса, номеров телефона и факса.
Кроме того, автор заявки должен сообщить имена, места работы и электронные
адреса не менее чем двух коллег, готовых принять участие в работе
предлагаемой секции, причем как минимум один из них должен представлять
иную страну, нежели автор заявки.

Организационный комитет сообщит результаты рассмотрения заявок на
организацию секций до 15 февраля 2008 г. Отбор заявок будет производиться
на конкурсной основе. Помимо этого, Оргкомитет оставляет за собой право на
создание приглашенных и свободных секций. Предполагается, что в рамках
каждой секции будет заслушано порядка 10 –12 докладов, а список участников
будет составлен руководителями секций и Оргкомитетом в начале 2009 г.

Ни одна из заявок на организацию секции не может быть принята или
отвергнута на основании прежних профессиональных достижений заявителя, его
национальности, гражданства, пола и т.п. При принятии решения по той или
иной заявке Оргкомитет будет принимать во внимание исключительно ее
научный уровень и степень соответствия общей тематике конференции.
Особенно будут приветствоваться заявки на организацию секций,
ориентированных на рассмотрение проблематики “иерархия и власть” в
теоретическом и межцивилизационном контекстах.

Регистрационный взнос для граждан стран СНГ (за исключением сотрудников
учреждений-организаторов конференции) составляет 500 руб. и должен быть
внесен по прибытии на конференцию. Регистрационный взнос необходим для
частичного покрытия расходов на организацию и проведение конференции.

"Religion, Faith, Spirituality: An Interdisciplinary and International
Postgraduate Conference on the Past, Present and Future"

25-26 June 2008
Graduate School of the College of Arts and Humanities, Bangor
University, Wales.

Proposals for presentations are welcomed from postgraduates which
consider, but are not limited to, the following topics from the broad
area of religion, faith and spirituality:

Islamophobia, fundamentalism, clash of civilisations,
environmentalism, globalisation, war, terrorism, evolution, genocide,
creationism, ancient and new religions, cults, new age beliefs,
science fiction, photography, performance, popular culture, film,
media, literature, drama, art, creative writing, poetry, music, race,
gender, ethnicity, class, politics, ideology, patriarchy, ethics
morality and rhetoric.

Presentations may take the form of papers, readings, performances,
posters, film and multimedia demonstrations. Presentations will also
be considered for publication.

Professor Olson is no stranger to the topic, having published widely on
the interactions between science and religion, including his work _Science
Deified and Science Defied_ (1982). The excellence of his present volume
reviewed in this article is evidenced by its 2006 reprint in paperback by
Johns Hopkins University Press.

In his analysis, Olson takes a middle way between Kantians who claim
science and religion are completely separate disciplines with no authentic
interactions, and modern liberal Protestant theologians influenced by
Alfred Whitehead who “insist that God is part of the natural world and
co-evolves with it; so any change in scientific knowledge of nature
constitutes a change in our understanding of God” (p. 2).  Instead, Olson
posits that both disciplines have interacted and even cooperated. Even
acknowledging the precept of biblical accommodation, the complete
separation of theology, “the queen of the sciences” from the natural
sciences throughout most of the early modern period was inconceivable.
Olson also convincingly claims that science’s descriptive knowledge and
religion’s prescriptive knowledge do not necessarily conflict; in an
applied case study, he demonstrates that seemingly obvious cases of “war”
between science and religion such as Galileo’s trial often are about other
cases of struggle entirely.  For instance, Galileo could be a jerk about
priority of discovery, and he was often a jerk to Jesuit astronomers who
could have been powerful patrons and who instead, became powerful enemies.

With this conceptual basis established, comes a rapid presentation in
accessible prose of Christian humanism, Science and Catholicism
(1550-1700), Science and Religion in England (1590-1740), Newtonian
religion, Kant and post-Kantian reactions, mosaic and secular geology, and
Darwinism.  I was particularly impressed with the clarity of the
description of hermeticism and the Yates thesis, a topic which is often
impenetrable to undergraduates.

In a survey such as this, where the author has to pick and choose his
topics, particular areas must be omitted. That said, while the section on
nineteenth-century life sciences (focusing on natural theology and
Darwinism) was excellent, there was little about the chemical or
astronomical sciences in the nineteenth centuries.  For instance, the
“interpenetration” of scientific and religious ideas in Faraday’s work was
briefly mentioned in a sentence introduction, but nothing was to follow.
Faraday was a devout member of the Sandemanian denomination, a branch of
the Church of Scotland.  As Geoffrey Cantor has demonstrated, Faraday’s
concept of a divine unity in nature was key to his understanding of the
relationship between forces of nature such as electricity, light, and
magnetism.    The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion at St.
Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge also recognizes his combination
of a “deep religious faith with an outstanding scientific career.”

I also noticed a certain bias towards Anglo-American sources in the
bibliography. That said, I was thus surprised that Rob Iliffe’s on-line
Newton Project which was created to scan, transcribe, and analyze Newton’s
theological manuscripts (http://www.newtonproject.sussex.ac.uk/) was not
listed.  It is possible that the book’s remit did not allow for internet
sources to be included. But the on-line apparatus surrounding the Newton
Project is quite accessible to advanced undergraduates, David Haycock’s
work on William Stukeley being particularly noteworthy.

Olson however has written a book that will become an indispensable
reference for undergraduate research and pedagogy for this rich and
interesting topic.  As his volume ends with Darwin, I hope that Professor
Olson will soon delight the scholarly community with his treatment of
scientific and religious interactions in the twentieth century.   Highly
recommended.
