 Уважаемые коллеги!

 АНО "Пропповский центр: гуманитарные исследования в области традиционной культуры" сообщает о проведении международной научной конференции, посвященной 110-летнему юбилею Владимира Яковлевича Проппа,

  "Морфология праздника"

 12-14 мая 2005, Санкт-Петербург

 У монографии В.Я. Проппа "Русские аграрные праздники" - особая судьба. Являясь одной из наиболее читаемых и цитируемых работ, посвященных  ритуалам славянского календаря, она в значительно меньшей степени включена в современный научный дискурс, нежели другие труды ученого. Вместе с тем проблема праздника в культуре является одной из наиболее интересных, поскольку находится на пересечении разных в дисциплинарном и методологическом плане подходов. Предмет обсуждения предполагает проблематизацию описания  сложного семиотического комплекса. Праздник  имеет статус социального события, оформленного культурной традицией, и именно поэтому может быть определен как динамический знак культуры. Обсуждение современных подходов к изучению русских традиционных праздников и составляет задачу конференции. Особое внимание планируется уделить презентации новых полевых аудио и видеозаписей, отражающих  современное состояние обрядовой традиции.

Magical, Religious, Occult and Mystical Discourse

A Panel Discussion at the Eighth International Literature and Humanities

Conference,

INSCRIPTIONS '05: an arts and culture conference and festival

at Eastern Mediterranean University

in Famagusta, on the island of Cyprus

May 12th - 13th, 2005

Submissions are invited for a Panel Discussion on the relations between

language and belief in the preternatural; and on the interpretive techniques

involved

in deciphering or determining the meaning and significance of spoken or

written texts

and images in the traditions variously classified as magical, religious,

occult, or mystical.

We welcome in particular presentations which suggest points of intersection

or engagement

between these relations and techniques, and contemporary tendencies in

critical theory.

Some possible topic areas (others are welcome):

-alchemical, cabalistic, or theosophical texts; Books of the Dead, grimoires

-oracular/trance speech, glossolalia, automatic writing

-Ouija boards, Tarot cards, astrology, techniques of divination

-symbolic, allegorical, anagogical readings of text/ the world as text

-spells, prayers, promises, incantations

-absence and presence; conjuration and exorcism

-runes, charms, amulets, talismans

-performative subjects/objects: satanism, witchcraft, voodoo, obeah

-magical moralities: the tales of Perrault, the Grimm brothers, and Anderson

-ideologies of magic: Lewis, Tolkien, Le Guin, and Rowling

-mystical desire, ecstasy, orgasm, and transcendent language

-witches and warlocks: gender roles in the experience of the supernatural

-sacred texts and ideologies of translation

-Meister Eckhart, Boehme, Swedenborg, and the language of angels

-angels, daemons, and hermeneutic mediation

-magic, medicine, and readings/inscriptions of the body

-Michel de Certeau's Mystic Fable

-visions, dreams, texts of revelation, the language of the possessed

-Biblical hermeneutics, revelation, and the death of god

-postmodern theologies

-madness, spirit/demonic possession, and psychoanalysis

-Faustian contracts and binding spells; knowledge and power

Prospective panelists are invited to send 250-word abstracts/proposals for

15-20 minute presentations on any aspect of these areas to

Call for Papers

In the Greco-Roman world various groups had to negotiate cultural and

religious space within the empire.  Some were official, some tolerated, and

others illicit.  Recent scholarship on the complexity of these relationships

and interactions has opened up new ways to understand our western tradition.

This conference focuses on the intersection of Jews, Greeks, and Christians in

antiquity.  It is an interdisciplinary effort to examine this period from

different religious, social, philosophical, and cultural perspectives.  The

aim is to deepen our understanding of how these three traditions thought of

their gods, themselves, and the world around them. What did they have to say

to one another?

We welcome a wide range of approaches to this topic.  Some papers will proceed

historically, considering how diverse communities actually lived in one

another's company. Other papers will make their own comparisons with a view

to elucidating philosophical or theological issues across traditions.  Still

others will take a more literary approach to key texts.  We are especially

interested in papers that speak to an interdisciplinary audience.

7th International Conference on

The Social Context of Death, Dying and Disposal

University of Bath - United Kingdom

15-18th September 2005

We are pleased to announce that the University of Bath will be hosting the

7th International Conference on the Social Context of Death Dying and

Disposal from 15-18th September 2005.

The conference covers all social aspects of death, dying and loss. It is a

multi-disciplinary residential conference for anthropologists,

archaeologists, art and architectural historians, artists, bereavement

counsellors, cultural geographers, deathwork practitioners, historians,

literary theorists, medical and health practitioners, palliative care

workers, philosophers, psychologists, students of religion, social policy

analysts, sociologists and those in the legal professions.

Plenary speakers will be Robert Kastenbaum (University of Arizona, USA);

Tony Walter (University of Reading, UK); and Nigel Hartley (St Christopher's

Hospice, UK).

This international conference will be held in the World Heritage city of

Bath. A social programme is planned including an evening wine reception in

the flood-lit Roman Baths.

PAPER SUBMISSION DETAILS

300 word abstracts for conference papers are invited on any subject

pertinent to the social context of death, dying and disposal. Proposals for

posters and work-in-progress sessions are also welcome. These should be sent

 The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center and the Slavic and East

European Library at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, are

pleased to announce its 2005 Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, Eastern

Europe, and Eurasia, June 13 - August 5.  Please check the website for the

 The SRL enables scholars to conduct advanced research in Russian, East

European and Eurasian Studies.  Lab associates are given full access to the

collection and resources of the University of Illinois Library, the largest

Slavic collection west of Washington, DC, and are able to seek assistance

from the Slavic Reference Service staff.  The SRL provides an opportunity

for specialists to keep current on knowledge and research in the field, to

access newly available and archival materials, and disseminate knowledge to

other scholars, professionals, government officials, and the public.  The

Summer Lab is an ideal program for doctoral students conducting

pre-dissertation/dissertation research.

The following persons are eligible to apply to the Summer Lab:

    * Faculty or doctoral students at a university or college who are

teaching and/or doing research on the region.

    * Individuals who have a PhD and are doing research on the region, even

if this expertise is not being used in current employment.

    * Individuals working in an area of government or business related to

the region, regardless of academic training.

    * Librarians specializing in the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian

field.

To be eligible for housing grants and the new graduate student travel

grants, the above criteria apply along with the following:

    * Research Area: Scholars conducting policy relevant research on the

countries of Eurasia and Southeastern Europe. Under US Department of State

regulations, housing grants MAY NOT be provided to scholars conducting

research (policy relevant or otherwise) on any of the new EU nations -

Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Estonia,

Latvia, and Lithuania.

    * Policy Relevance: All applicants requesting housing grants must state

the policy relevance of their research. For junior scholars policy

relevance can be envisioned in fairly broad terms; however, State

Department regulations stipulate that senior scholars cannot be funded

unless their research is clearly policy relevant. For more information on

policy relevance, please check the SRL website under "proposal information".

    * For graduate student travel grant, applicants must be a U.S.

citizen/permanent resident.

АНГАЖИРОВАН-НОСТЬ. Некоторые публикации о

возможной канонизации бывшего патриарха Никона

Совсем недавно глава Мордовии высказался в том

смысле, что 400-летие со дня рождения патриарха

Никона станет "крупным событием 2005 года".

"Мордвин, ставший предстоятелем Русской

Православной Церкви, внёс значительный вклад в дело

объединения народов России, укрепления духовных

основ общества, – сказал он. В СМИ и в

церковно-научных изданиях уже существует немало

публикаций, свидетельствующих о подготовке некими

силами в Московской Патриархии канонизации, то есть

причисления к лику святых, весьма известного в нашей

истории патриарха Никона. Хочу заметить, что при

внимательном изучении научно-историческая, в

частности, фактологическая база теоретических

построений нынешних апологетов упомянутого иерарха

вызывает ряд недоумений. В настоящем сообщении

предпринимается попытка показать это, в основном на

примере статьи В. Шмидта "Жизнеописание Патриарха

Никона", помещённой в "Журнале Московской

Патриархии", № 11 за 2002 г. [1]

     был настоятелем кладбищенской церкви. Здесь я наблюдал

     следующие трагические картины, о которых хотел бы сейчас

     подробно рассказать Трибуналу.

     Спустя несколько дней

     после вероломного нападения гитлеровской Германии на

     Советский Союз я был свидетелем огромного увеличения

     числа отпеваний умерших. Это были дети, женщины и

     престарелые люди, погибшие в результате вероломных

     налетов немецкой авиации на город, - мирные жители нашего

     города..."

The Yale Philosophy Review is a bi-annual undergraduate journal at Yale

University that showcases the best and most original of philosophic thought

by undergraduate students, worldwide. The goal of the Review is to promote

philosophic discourse of the highest standard, and to bring together a

community of young philosophers in both the United States and abroad. Each

issue contains a selection of essays on a broad range of philosophic topics,

as well as book reviews and interviews of philosophic content. The Review

awards a prize of $100 to the author of the paper judged to be of the highest

quality in terms of rigor and originality.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Book Reviews and Interviews Submission. If you are interested in writing a

book review or an interview for The Yale Philosophy Review, please email the

editors with a proposed book (published within the last twelve months) or

interviewee. Final publication of book reviews and interviews is at the

discretion of the Editors.

Paper and Essay Submission. Papers should be 10-20 double-spaced pages in MLA

format. Papers must be the original work of the author, with all sources and

references properly cited.

While we do not take previously published papers, we do accept simultaneous

submissions, with the expectation that we will be informed immediately if the

paper is being published elsewhere.

Please include a cover page with the following information: Name, University

or College, Major or Degree, Year of expected graduation, Email, Phone

number, and Address. Do not include any personal information on the paper

itself. Please include a short (500 word max.) abstract at the beginning of

your paper.

Deadline and Submission Information. All submissions for the Spring 2005

issue must be postmarked or emailed by March 1, 2005.

- православному акафисту русским святым. Акафисты на протяжении всей истории русского православия имели огромную значимость и популярность. Автор, опираясь на широкий круг источников, провел систематическое исследование становления акафистографии, истории бытования акафистов в русской православной среде вплоть до юнца XX в. Особое внимание уделяется жанровому своеобразию и литургичности акафистов, а также взаимодействию: акафистографии с русским фольклором. С позиций современных теорий мифа в монографии раскрыто понимание связи акафиста и мифологии.
