Грамматика: Past Continuous

 

Past continuous употребляется для выражения длительного действия, начавшегося до определенного момента в прошлом и все еще совершающегося в этот момент.

 

At 9 o'clock I was having supper.

I was working at 10pm last night.

What was he doing at that moment?

 

Для выражения незаконченного действия, происходящего параллельно с каким-нибудь действием, выраженным глаголом в прошедшем времени группы Simple: 

 

When I came into the room they were discussing the program for the day.

It was raining when I left the house.

 

Past continuous выражает два параллельных действия, совершающиеся одновременно.

 

I was studying while he was making dinner.

I wasn't paying attention while I was writing the letter, so I made several mistakes.

Thomas wasn't working, and I wasn't working either.

They were eating dinner, discussing their plans, and having a good time.

Немного юмора: A Talking Frog


An older gentleman was playing a round of golf. Suddenly his ball sliced and landed in a shallow pond. As he was attempting to retrieve the ball he discovered a frog who, to his great surprise, started to speak! "Kiss me, and I will change into a beautiful princess, and I will be yours for a week." He picked up the frog and placed it in his pocket. As he continued to play golf, the frog repeated its message. "Kiss me, and I will change into a beautiful princess, and I will be yours for a whole month!" The man continued to play his golf game and once again the frog spoke out. "Kiss me,and I will change into a beautiful princess, and I will be yours for a whole year!" Finally, the old man turned to the frog and exclaimed, "At my age, I'd rather have a talking frog!"

Age before beauty, шутливое, но немного грубоватое предложение кому-либо пройти куда-либо перед вами; насмешливый, поддразнивающий и слегка недоброжелательный способ показать, что кто-то должен или может пройти первым.

God willing, выражение, означающее, что существует высокая степень вероятности того, что что-то случится, такая высокая, что только бог может предотвратить это.

  • JOHN: Please try to be on time.
  • ALICE: I'll be there on time. God willing.
  • BOB: Will I see you after your vacation?
  • MARY: Of course. God willing.

  • BOB: Eve¬rything is in such a mess. I can't seem to get things done right.

more or less несколько туманная фраза, которой пользуются для выражения неопределённости или неуверенности.

  • HENRY: I think this one is what I want, more or less.
  • CLERK: A very wise choice, sir.
  • HENRY: Is this one the biggest, more or less?
  • JOHN: Oh, yes. It's the biggest there is.

Wait up (a minute)! Подождите, пока я вас догоню!

  • Тоm, who was following Mary down the street, said, "Wait up a minute! I need to talk to you."
  • JOHN: Hey, Sally! Wait up!
  • SALLY: What's happening?
