A good week for ...

Bricklayers

Forget footballers and pop stars - the new must-have accessory for the predatory, aspirant female (or, indeed, male) is a cash-rich brickie. It was in a survey, so it must be true. Yes, Bricklayers' Wives are a newly identified social group.

Beer

Or, perhaps, beer drinkers. Some cans are now cheaper than some bottled water on sale in supermarkets - Carling sells for 54p a pint in Sainsbury's ,for example, while Perrier is the equivalent of 57p a pint. And only one makes us do our funny, free-form dance.

Astronauts

At last, Britain is preparing to send our own men to the moon. Moonraker is an entirely British project being planned in Surrey. A highly professional operation, we're sure, but why is there something a touch odd, if not to say comic, about the combination of space rockets and Surrey?

A bad week for ...

The dead

New anti-toxin orders on crematoriums are forcing the price of burning our dead up by £100 a corpse. It's to cope with the £300,000 cost of installing new filters to make sure that the smoke is cleaner. It might have to be a hole in the ground for us. In due course, obviously.

Tea

The old English cuppa may not be as good for us as we've always thought it was. Apparently, the heart-improving benefits of tea are wiped out by the addition of a splash of milk. And, like the Queen, we always take milk.

Felipe Fernandez-Armesto

The history prof was forced to the ground by police in Atlanta, who were not happy with his 'jaywalking'. The gentle professor described it as the most violent episode in his life. What's worse - and we kid you not - the police confiscated his box of peppermints.

The sport of kings

No longer is it necessary to be invited into the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. From this year, racegoers will be able to buy their way in at a cost of just £530 per person. Bargain. Still, as one long-standing racegoer commented: 'It's the end of Ascot as we know it.'
