Weekly news from UK

BAD WEEK FOR:

  • A British cyclist, who was sent to prison for slashing 2,000 tyres. Ashley Carpenter, 37, used a screwdriver to puncture the tyres of 548 parked cars, trucks and vans in revenge for the "inconsiderate manner" of motorists. Carpenter told police he began his campaign after one car nearly knocked him down and another drove through a puddle of water and drenched him.
  • A teenager in Florida, USA who has been arrested for trying to pay a hitman to kill his mother. The 17-year-old boy offered US$2000 to have his mother killed and gave the hitman (an undercover policeman) the keys to the family apartment, a map of the apartment and a picture of his mother but asked the hitman not to damage the television!
  • A German woman and a male friend, who face prosecution for human trafficking after they put the woman's daughter up for auction on the Internet at a starting price of one Euro. The advertisement for the 8-year-old child included a photo and received various bids before it was withdrawn by the internet company.
  • A British man, who visited a safari park and a rhinoceros tried to have sex with his car! The two tonne rhino became amorous with the man's Renault Laguna, trying to mount it from the side, denting the doors and ripping off the wing mirrors. "He was a big boy and obviously aroused," the man said.
  • A Mexican cook, who has been arrested after he killed his drinking buddy, cut up his body and boiled him in herbs. Police found a man's mutilated corpse in the living room and body parts simmering in aluminium saucepans on the patio.
  • Football in Afghanistan, after nine players from the national team disappeared from a training camp in Italy. Six of the players have been arrested in Germany, where they sought asylum.
  • Medical ethics in the Netherlands, after 4 percent of Dutch male doctors have admitted having sexual contact with one or more patients.
  • A 79-year-old man, who is fighting for his life after he was trampled by a herd of cows as he walked his dog in the countryside in northeast England.
  • The family of Princess Diana , which says it is "shocked and sickened" by a U.S. television network's decision to show pictures of her taken as she lay dying in a Paris road tunnel.
  • An Australian man, who blew his nose so hard that he expelled 60% of the front lobe of his brain through his sinuses. When paramedics arrived the man was already dead.
  • A Canadian driver, who has been charged with careless driving after Police caught him playing a violin at the wheel. A Police spokesman said, "it was lucky he was not playing a cello".

GOOD WEEK:

  • Owners of noisy dogs, with the news that researchers at the University of Edinburgh have developed a dog perfume which makes difficult dogs quieter and more friendly to strangers.
  • An Asian cook in Berlin, Germany, who stopped a fleeing thief by knocking him unconscious with a wok.
  • The crews of two nuclear submarines, one British and one American, which surfaced near the North Pole on Monday for an impromptu game of football.
  • Honesty, after a British man returned a history book to the Malta public library 42 years after he borrowed it. Instead of receiving a fine the man was given a cup of coffee.
  • A South African man, who survived an 18-floor fall from a Cape Town hotel room. After treatment at a nearby hospital, doctors pronounced the man "stable, talking and fine."
