At a time when the world seems so troubled I am pleased to send you some light-hearted,
trivial news that I have found in the British newspapers this week.
So, what has been happening in the world this week??
BAD WEEK FOR:
Vietnam Airlines, after news that passengers have been stealing life vests from the
planes to use while swimming at the beach. "There are many flights from which 16 to
20 life vests have been stolen," a Vietnam Airlines' spokesman said.

British television that he regularly shares his bedroom with children.
A Russian man, who was sentenced to 30 months in prison for smuggling 44 kg of caviar
into the United States without the required permits.
Football players in Gambia, after the country's leader Yahya Jammeh has banned youths
from playing soccer in the rainy season, saying they should be working in the fields to
boost agriculture. "Youths in rural areas should not involve themselves with football
in the coming rainy season (June to October). Failure to do so and I will send them to
jail. I mean it," Jammeh said
A family in Louisiana, USA, who visited their grand-mother several times, but failed to
notice one important point: she was dead! Police said that the family had visited their
grandmother regularly but the woman had already been dead for 3 weeks.
A 122-year-old man, who has died in Egypt. Youssef Mohamed Attia al-Chadhli, a carpenter
from the town of Damietta on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, had eight children, the oldest
of whom had died at age 72. A local newspaper said the man, who had 32 grandchildren, had
never been to see a doctor.
A Romanian driver, who has been fined US$15 (the equivalent of a week's wages) after
failing to slow down while passing a rabbit. A police spokesman explained: "A rabbit
today, a child tomorrow".
GOOD WEEK FOR:
A Thai woman, who has won the title of "Miss Drunk" in Bangkok. Arunothai
Sriaran drank 5 litres of wine and navigated a zig-zag obstacle course in 7 seconds to
defeat 14 other hopefuls.
All ministers, committee heads, regional bosses and other top officials in Turkmenistan,
after their President gave each of them a new Mercedes limousine. President Saparmurat
Niyazov said in 1992 that every Turkmen family would own a house and car within a decade.
Latin, with the news that it is becoming more popular to study Latin in American schools
thanks to the "Harry Potter" books and films which are filled with Latin-worded
spells.
ONLY IN AMERICA:
A Texas travel agency is arranging the world's first nude flight. The travel agency has
chartered a Boeing 727 for a flight on 3 May from Miami to Cancun. Passengers will be
fully dressed for check-in and take-off, but will be allowed to strip once the plane
reaches cruising altitude.
