Weekly news from UK

Yes, I know, I promised to write to you on Friday and today is Monday. I am so sorry but British Telecom AGAIN disconnected our internet service!! I do not want to tell you all the details because it makes me too stressed :-).

And the news ….

GOOD WEEK FOR:

  • Drivers in Lagos, Nigeria, after traffic lights have been introduced. "It's good that we have some traffic lights now. The problem is that many drivers here don't know what they are," said taxi-driver Emmanuel Okereke. "But they are learning."
  • A Taiwanese lady, who can see again after being blind for 43 years. Her sight was miraculously restored when she bumped into a tractor. Miyagu Taitung, 53, said: "All my life I assumed I was ugly, but now that I know how beautiful I am, I don't think I'll have too much trouble finding a boyfriend".
  • Thai drivers, after Thailand's Ministry said it planned to set up massage services at petrol stations to help motorists relieve stress and, hopefully, cut the road toll. On average, two people die in road accidents every hour in Thailand -- one of the world's worst accident rates, the ministry said.
  • Sebastian Clover, a 15 year old boy from England, who has become the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic single-handed. Clover completed the 4300 km crossing in 25 days.

BAD WEEK FOR:

  • Gianluca Grassadonia, a defender with Italian football club Cagliari, who had his car set on fire after he scored an own-goal in a Serie B match.
  • A chef in a hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, who lost his finger while operating a meat-slicer. The man submitted a claim to the insurance company but the insurance company was suspicious and so sent an inspector to check the machine. When the inspector turned on the machine, he too lost his finger!
  • German Police, after 10 Police cards and a helicopter chased a car believed to be containing 3 men and a gun. When they finally stopped the car they found it contained 3 men and a salami!

STORIES TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD, Gennadiy:

  • In 1962, four nervous young musicians played their first record audition for the executives of the Decca recording Company. The executives were not impressed. While turning down this group of musicians, one executive said, "We don't like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out." The group was called The Beatles.
  • In 1944, Emmeline Snively, director of the Blue Book Modelling Agency, told modelling hopeful Norma Jean Baker, "You'd better learn secretarial work or else get married." She went on and became Marilyn Monroe.
  • In 1954, Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, fired a singer after one performance. He told him, "You ain't goin' nowhere son. You ought to go back to drivin' a truck." He went on to become Elvis Presley.
  • A little girl - the 20th of 22 children, was born prematurely and her survival was doubtful. When she was 4 years old, she contracted double pneumonia and scarlet fever, which left her with a paralysed left leg. At age 9, she removed the metal leg brace she had been dependent on and began to walk without it. By 13 she had developed a rhythmic walk, which doctors said was a miracle. That same year she decided to become a runner. She entered a race and came in last. For the next few years every race she entered, she came in last. Everyone told her to quit, but she kept on running. One day she actually won a race. And then another. From then on she won every race she entered. Eventually this little girl, Wilma Rudolph, went on to win three Olympic gold medals.
  • A school teacher scolded a boy for not paying attention to his mathematics and for not being able to solve simple problems. She told him that you would not become anybody in life. The boy went on to become Albert Einstein.
