Weekly news from UK

GOOD WEEK FOR:

  • "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", which broke all records when 1.25 million copies of the video and DVD were sold on its first day of release in Britain.
  • Two hundred Canadians, who created the world's largest omelette. The dish used 46,000 eggs, 136kg of tomatoes, 136kg of onions and 72kg of peppers.
  • Thai civil servants looking for extra cash, who can now earn money from hunting. The Bangkok city government will pay an eight-baht (13 pence) reward for every stray dog they catch. It is estimated that there are more than 120,000 stray dogs in Thailand's capital.
  • Lovers of exotic food, with the news that purple carrots will be launched in Britain this summer. In fact, the purple vegetables are not unnatural. It was their original colour before the Dutch decided to cultivate them in their national colour orange in the 1720s.
  • Couch potatoes, who sit around drinking cups of tea and watching T.V. New research shows that habitual tea drinking over several years preserves bone density.
  • A 160kg lion, that tore off a zookeeper's arm at a Florida theme park. Officials say the animal will not be put to death.

BAD WEEK FOR:

  • The BBC, which had to apologise to Koreans for a joke on it's World Cup website. The joke, which read: "Over here, a dog is for Christmas, over there it could be for breakfast, lunch or dinner", was described as "tasteless and offensive".
  • A tongue-tied thief who burst into a Florida bank, waving a gun and screaming "Freeze mother-stickers, this is a f***-up!". The bank employees dissolved into laughter and the robber fled in humiliation.
  • An Alsatian dog, which ate its owner's dead body after being trapped in a house with the woman's corpse for several weeks. Police said the 78-year-old pensioner, from the southern Austrian province of Styria, had died from natural causes before being devoured by her starving dog.
  • Patricia Amos, who is the first person to be jailed in Britain for allowing her children to be truant from school. She has been jailed for 60 days for failing to ensure that two of her daughters, aged 13 and 15, went regularly to school.
  • Housework; it's exhausting, time consuming and although it counts as physical activity, housework does not improve health or help to shed those excess pounds, British researchers said on Wednesday. Brisk walking is a much healthier option and a better way to keep fit than mopping floors, dusting and cleaning windows, particularly for older women between the ages of 60-79.
  • Swaziland's international airport; it has no working control tower or radar system and lighting for night time landings is so poor that pilots are forced to fly by memory. Lightning destroyed the airport's radio 18 months ago and had not been fixed.
  • 21 gamblers, all women, who were arrested in an illegal casino in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Gambling is illegal but widespread in communist-ruled Vietnam. Those caught breaking the law are subject to fines or prison terms ranging from a few months to several years.
  • Brazilian couples, after new research shows that only 25% of Brazilians expect their spouse to remain faithful during marriage.
  • Rubens Barrichello, the Brazilian Formula 1 driver, who was ordered to move aside on the very last lap of the Austrian Grand Prix to hand victory to his team mate Michael Schumacher.
  • Lovers of melons in Japan; a department store in the northern city of Sapporo bought the first two locally grown melons of the season for 150,000 yen (US$1,100) each!
